One of the unique aspects of Major League Baseball betting involves the home plate umpire for each game. While baseball has tried to implement a more universal strike zone in recent years, there are still some noticeable differences between a few of the umpires around the majors. Here?s a look at some of the top trend setters in the 2011 campaign:
Holbrook tops over list
Among the 70 primary umpires in Major League Baseball this season, Sam Holbrook has been behind the plate for the highest percentage of overs. The 14-year MLB umpire has an over record of 12-2-1 this year (through June 13th).
One of the most experienced umpires ranks second in the over rankings. In his 29th MLB season, Tim McClelland has posted an over mark of 10-2 so far this season. While McClelland has a pretty solid reputation around baseball, a couple of other stats tend to indicate that he has been a hitter?s umpire in 2011. In his 12 games behind the dish this season, there has been an average total score of 11.2 runs. This ranks as the highest figure for any umpire this year. Also, McClelland has averaged an MLB-high 8.3 walks per game as a home plate ump this season.
In his first full year as an MLB umpire, Scott Barry has an over record of 9-2-2. However, some of his numbers are actually a little more favorable to pitchers despite the over percentage. With 16.2 strikeouts per game, Barry ranks second in strikeouts per contest for a home plate ump. He is in the bottom half of the bases on balls rankings with an average of just over six per game.
Another young umpire heads the under rankings in 2011. In ten games behind home plate this season, Alan Porter has been involved in just a single contest that has gone over the total. He also ranks as the home plate umpire with the lowest total scoring average per game at 5.5 runs. In a bit of a contrast, Porter is in the bottom ten in terms of strikeouts per game behind the dish.
James Hoye checks in next with an under mark of 10-2. He is just in his second full year as an MLB umpire. With an under record of 11-3, Tim Timmons rounds out the top three list of under umpires. He has been in the majors since the 2001 campaign.
