Patriots move to address arrest of Hernandez

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? With Aaron Hernandez's arrest hovering over the start of training camp, the New England Patriots sent out quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick to shed some light.

Brady spoke for 17 minutes Thursday and said the murder charge against his former tight end is "zero" distraction to him.

Belichick spoke for 22 minutes Wednesday and said the team would learn from the "terrible experience."

Both spoke with greater patience and candor than they usually do as the Patriots hurried to remove the stain from their reputation ? and lower media attention ? before their first practice on Friday.

"You talk about the 'Patriot Way' and to me that means mental toughness and to me it means dealing with different situations and adversities over the course of a season and offseason," Brady said, "and how you can put those things behind you and focus on your job."

The Patriots were happy to get back on the field during conditioning tests Thursday.

Brady was asked about the team's morale.

"It's fun. It's exciting," he said. "This is a new year for us. Last year didn't end the way that we would have hoped so we have a chance to go out there and try to do a lot better this year."

The Patriots lost the AFC championship game to the Baltimore Ravens.

"The fate of our season is going to be determined by the guys in the locker room," Brady said, "and, hopefully, nothing else."

Not only must they improve on the field, but, Brady said, the Patriots must work hard to "re-establish what we're all about" after the arrest of Hernandez.

"It's been a challenging offseason," he said. "But we're going to try to move forward as best we know how."

Brady talked at length for the first time since Hernandez's name surfaced in connection with the shooting death of Boston semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd on June 17. Hernandez was arrested on June 26 and cut by the Patriots before he was charged that afternoon. He is being held without bail after pleading not guilty.

"Certainly, it's a very tragic thing that happened and someone loses their life," Brady said, "but all those things were out of the players' control here. We're not really a part of that situation."

He declined to answer several questions, saying he had been advised not to. They included whether he had spoken with Hernandez or whether Hernandez had apologized to him after the tight end was linked to the investigation.

During Hernandez's three seasons since being drafted by the Patriots, he was one of Brady's top receivers.

Asked if he thought he knew Hernandez, Brady said, "the relationship that you have as a football player, the relationship you have within the walls of (Gillette Stadium) are what they are and then people have their own life."

Might people not know others as well as they think they do?

"I don't know if you quantify those things," Brady said. "How well do you know your kids? You try to do the best you can do, but everyone is ultimately accountable for their own decision making."

Asked if Hernandez had fit in with his former teammates, Brady said, "I don't think any of that really matters to me or matters to anything that's going on with the legal process or anything like that."

On the day before camp opened, Belichick displayed unusual patience with questioners and gave more detailed answers than usual after making an opening statement while using notes.

On Thursday, it was the turn of the team's best player.

"It's a terrible thing that happened," Brady said. "There's a very human, compassionate element that we all have and when it's someone that has been on our team, it's a very sad thing. So I think that we, as a team, have tried to move forward with better awareness and understanding of these types of things."

He listed several former teammates ? Tedy Bruschi, Kevin Faulk, Troy Brown, Mike Vrabel ? who represented the Patriots well on and off the field.

"Everyone who has played here has played a part of what the New England Patriots are all about," said Brady, wearing a dark blue sweatshirt with the words, "PATRIOTS ESTABLISHED IN 1960" on the front. "We realize that in light of the recent situation that probably those things get overshadowed and we've got to work hard to kind of re-establish what we're all about.

"And that's, like we said, to win games and to be the best representatives of this team and organization and representatives for this city that we can possibly be."

Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork also spoke Thursday but didn't mention Hernandez's name.

"You're dealing with a real-life situation, so it's easy to get caught up in the media or speculations. We're not here for that," Wilfork said. "I feel bad for the victim's family, but we have to move forward as a football team. That's sad to say, but that's reality."

It's important, he said, to keep off-field issues separate from players' jobs on the field.

"It's going to test this team's chemistry. It's going to test everyone that's in this locker room," Wilfork said. "It's going to test to see how important football is to us. As a family, you just have to take it day-by-day, move forward day-by-day. At the end of the day, the ball is going to continue to roll and the last thing we want to do is be stuck behind the ball."

On Wednesday, a probable cause hearing for Hernandez was rescheduled for Aug. 22 to give prosecutors more time to present evidence to a grand jury.

Might Wilfork be distracted from football if he's called before a grand jury?

"What can I do," he asked. "The only thing I can do is control what I can control and that's playing football. Whatever happens in the future, happens. We'll handle it then."

Drivers may see even more pain at the pump?

energy

Taking that affordable summer road trip?or just driving around town for errands?might suddenly be a budget buster, due to rising gas prices.

On Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline hit $3.61, according to AAA. That's up 14 cents from a week ago, and the largest price spike since February, said AAA spokesman Michael Green.

Worse, analysts expect prices could go even higher, edging up another 5 to 15 cents per gallon before the end of July.

"Crude oil prices are up 10 percent in last three weeks, and gas prices have some catching up to do," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com. "When oil prices are up, gasoline is bound to follow."

Several other factors have also played a role. Crude prices have trended higher on news of minor production problems at several U.S.refineries, as well as continued violence in Egypt. "That spooks the market," Green said. News on either issue could push prices higher, or lower if the news points to increased supply.

Toby Talbot / AP

Analysts expect prices could go even higher, edging up another 5 to 15 cents per gallon before the end of July.

Prices aren't likely to settle before Labor Day, or even September. "The 500-pound gorilla that's ready to walk in the door is the upcoming peak of hurricane season" in August, said DeHaan. After Hurricane Katrina damaged refineries in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005, spiking prices and stretching supply, major storms moving in that direction generate worries of similar problems. That can also edge crude prices higher.

That said, drivers in most states won't see prices top $4 per gallon, Green said. (On Tuesday, just three?Alaska, California and Hawaii?had prices surpassing that mark.)

Strategies abound for drivers to cut their pain at the pump. The U.S. Department of Energy's FuelEconomy.gov recommends strategies including observing the speed limit (saving 7 to 14 percent), and clearing extra items from your vehicle (1 to 2 percent savings per 100 pounds).

But the best recourse for drivers, experts say, is to assess local prices before filling up. "When prices are volatile, that can mean a wider gap between the cheapest and most expensive stations," said DeHaan. Per-gallon savings could be as much as 70 cents just by choosing one gas station over another.

Apps like GasBuddy and AAA TripTik display local prices, helping drivers determine which stations in an area are cheapest. (Some sites and apps rely on users to submit new prices; check when a price was submitted before banking on it as the best savings.)

Pair that with the right payment method. Some gas stations offer savings of roughly 5 cents per gallon for paying with cash. Convenience store chain Cumberland Farms launched a payment app in January offering discounts of 5 to 10 cents per gallon for users.

Plenty of credit cards also offer generous rewards on gas purchases, said Odysseas Papadimitriou, chief executive of comparison site CardHub.com. Look for a general rewards card rather than one tied to a specific station, which lets drivers shop around. General cards are also less apt to cap rewards earned, making them more generous than station-specific cards when prices are rising, he said.

CardHub.com's top pick is the PenFed Platinum Rewards card, which offers 5 percent cash back on gas purchases. Cardholders must be members of the credit union, but can sign up for as little as $15.

Supermarket loyalty programs may offer another avenue for savings. Although memberships in such programs fell 1 percent since 2010, according to research firm Colloquy, chains have added more gas discounts based on grocery purchases. In some cases, shoppers can earn vouchers for more than $1 off per gallon on a single fill-up, based on something they would do anyway?buy groceries.

95% A Band Called Death

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (14) | Fresh (38) | Rotten (2)

Fortunately, Bobby and Dannis, the surviving brothers, prove genial company.

If the brothers seem a little drunk on their own myth, they're also genuinely humbled by the band's rediscovery and warmed by the fact that their kids have carried on the family tradition.

Their story can feel almost too ready-made for the telling, but it's well worth a listen.

... a must-watch for fans of punk music, vinyl record wonks, or even those interested ... a visionary entertainment dream.

[A] generous, spirited documentary [that captures] one of the strangest and most inspiring of all family stories of tragedy and triumph that this crazy country has produced.

It was fans' ardor that began the Death revival and propels the movie's exhilarating second half.

Directors Mark Christopher Covino and Jeff Howlett tell this part of A Band Called Death without much artifice, relying on the natural charm and sunny dispositions of the surviving Hackney brothers to draw us in.

It's a soul-stirring tribute to a man whose vision was too bold and revolutionary for his lifetime, or the convention-bound ways of the music industry, but was ultimately too powerful to be denied.

An amazing story -- about the history of rock, about the capriciousness of fame and, perhaps most importantly, about the power of family.

Like 'Searching For Sugar Man,' 'A Band Called Death' takes its cue from the modesty and joyfulness of its subjects, letting the glory of their music speak for itself.

It's less about the rediscovery of genius than it is the value of obscurity, a sentiment that should give hope to every garage band out there.

Questions about what that reputation is worth today, and how the Hackney brothers struggled to find a foothold, give filmmakers Mark Covino and Jeff Howlett plenty of material to work with.

A Band Called Death shines the light on a previously unexplored corner of musical history and does it in an accessible, straightforward manner.

A Band Called Death is a film that is all heart, as was the band it looks to explore.

Death never got very far, and their story is a fascinating one, told beautifully by Jeff Howlett and Mark Christopher Covino.

Thanks to the new revelatory and inspiring documentary A Band Called Death, the truth behind the band's nearly simultaneous birth and death may yet find them their proper place in music history.

It is a deeply moving story of a family that was both bound together and driven apart by art, and it tells this personal story so beautifully that there were several moments that gave me actual chills.

Even if you didn't know a thing about the band and you don't even typically listen to the kind of music they play, you're going to find yourself thankful that the Hackney brothers are now in your life.

The story of Death sure adds an interesting and virtually unknown footnote to the annals of punk rock.

Still sounding amazingly fresh, the brothers' good spirits and storytelling are as infectiously appealing as their punk rock seems to be a fountain of youth

In the vein of Searching for Sugar Man, this earnest and engaging doc again proves that all the best nonfiction music stories aren't tied up in bitterness and acrimony, and certainly aren't related to any level of achieved fame.

Italy's Eni lowers targets at Iraq oil field

The Italian oil company Eni says it has agreed to lower production targets at a major oil field in Iraq's south while extending the length of the contract by five years.

Foreign oil companies have helped turn around Iraq's dilapidated oil industry in recent years, but export bottlenecks have forced Iraqi officials to rethink the pace of oil field development.

Eni says the deal signed Monday in Baghdad sets a new target at the Zubair field of 850,000 barrels of oil per day through 2035.

The 20-year deal it signed with Iraq in 2010 originally called for 1.2 million barrels of daily production.

Eni is the main contractor developing the 4.1 billion barrel Zubair field as part of a consortium that includes Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum and South Korea's KOGAS.

Pregnancy possible for many after childhood cancer

By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite research indicating that women who had cancer as girls have difficulty getting pregnant, a new study suggests that most can conceive, though it might take longer than usual.

Researchers from the U.S. and Canada found that female childhood cancer survivors tended to take longer to conceive than their sisters, but nearly two-thirds of the infertile survivors eventually did get pregnant.

"The main message counters what some people have thought, which is if you had cancer you won't be able to get pregnant or have children," said Dr. Lisa Diller, the study's senior author, from the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.

Historically, childhood cancer survivors have been counseled that they may be unable to get pregnant because cancer-fighting chemotherapy and radiation can damage their ovaries.

For the new study, Diller and her colleagues used data from questionnaires in an ongoing study of 3,531 cancer survivors and 1,366 of their sisters between the ages of 18 and 39 years old.

The survivors were all diagnosed before age 21 with cancer at one of 26 medical centers in the U.S. or Canada from 1970 through 1986. The women had all been cancer free for at least five years.

Compared to their sisters, cancer survivors were more likely to be clinically infertile, which means they had been trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant for more than a year.

Thirteen percent of survivors were clinically infertile, compared to 10 percent of their sisters.

Still, 64 percent of the 455 clinically infertile survivors eventually got pregnant.

That pregnancy rate is similar to what has been observed in clinically infertile women without a history of cancer, Richard Anderson, a professor of clinical reproductive science at the University of Edinburgh in the UK, writes in an editorial accompanying the new study in the journal Lancet Oncology.

The same proportion of cancer survivors and their sisters sought help from fertility specialists - about 3 percent, but the researchers found that survivors were less likely to opt for treatments to help improve their chances of getting pregnant.

"We don't know what the reason for that is. That wasn't specifically pursued in the questionnaire," said Dr. Elizabeth Ginsburg, medical director of assisted reproductive technologies at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and one of the study's authors.

It also took survivors longer to get pregnant, compared to their sisters.

Overall, it took 13 percent of cancer survivors more than a year to get pregnant, compared to 8 percent of the sisters who had never had cancer.

But Dr. Mitchell Rosen, director of the University of California, San Francisco Fertility Preservation Center, cautions that the new study cannot predict how childhood cancer survivors' fertility will change as they get into their late 30s or their 40s.

Rosen, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health that getting pregnant gets harder about 10 years before women go through menopause and childhood cancer survivors tend to go through early menopause.

That means childhood cancer survivors' fertility problems may be amplified in their late thirties and early forties, compared to women without a history of cancer.

"I think the awareness is important that these patients may be affected and if we want to optimize their care, improve their quality of life? then we all have to be aware and prompt consultations are important," said Rosen.

Ginsburg agreed that cancer survivors may have an increasingly difficult time getting pregnant the longer they wait, but she said the study provides hope for women who are survivors of childhood cancer.

"If people aren't totally sterilized by their chemotherapy, they have a pretty good chance of getting pregnant," Ginsburg said.

Stocks drop off after record-breaking surge?

stocks

Stocks were mixed on Friday but but major averages rallied sharply for the week, with the Dow and S&P 500 posting their second-best weekly gains this year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had surged 1 percent to a record-breaking finish on Thursday, closed just 3 points ahead, at 15,464.30. Boeing led the blue-chip laggards, while Bank of America rose.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq finished higher for the seventh-consecutive session. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slipped below 14.

Among key S&P sectors, financials led the gainers, while industrials slipped.

Boeing slumped 5 percent following a fire on one of the company's troubled Dreamliner airliners at London's Heathrow Airport. Earlier, the airplane maker's stock had hit an all-time high at $108.15 a share.

"This is bit of an intermission but it's probably normal after some of the moves we've seen recently," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

"It wouldn't be unusual to see a bit of a pullback after this strong run, but we're in earnings season, where the results will dominate all other variables?expectations are quite low and management teams seem to have done a good job of setting the bar at ankle height, so it seems likely that we'll have more positive surprises."

Among earnings, JPMorgan Chase edged higher after the Dow component and the largest U.S. bank by deposits beat expectations on both revenue and earnings. And Wells Fargo also gained after the financial company topped the Street on both ends.

They were the first major U.S. banks to report second-quarter earnings, setting the tone for the rest of the sector which will issue results throughout next week. Earnings expectations for JPMorgan in particular were high, as the bank has beaten analyst estimates in 12 of its last 13 earnings reports.

Major averages soared more than 1 percent on Thursday, with the Dow and S&P 500 closing at record highs, boosted by assurances by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke that the central bank would not remove its stimulus policies for some time.

(Read More: Cramer: Should You Celebrate or Fear the All-Time High?)

On Friday, Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Charles Plosser said the Fed should wind down quantitative easing by the end of 2013. He said policy makers should treat 6.5 percent unemployment and 2.5 percent inflation targets as "triggers," not "thresholds."

On the economic front, producer prices gained 0.8 percent in June, according to the Labor Department, edging past expectations for 0.5 percent. Core producer prices, which exclude volatile energy and food costs, edged up 0.2 percent.

Meanwhile, Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers' preliminary July consumer sentiment index fell to 83.9 from the final June figure of 84.1. Economists in a Reuters survey expected a preliminary July sentiment index reading of 85.0 compared with 84.1 in the final June report.

European shares pared their earlier gains to close slightly lower, after posting four days of successive gains. Meanwhile, the yield on Portugal's benchmark government bonds surged, following demands for a renegotiation of its bailout program.

After the European market close, Fitch slashed its credit rating on France to AA-plus from AAA with a "stable" outlook citing the country's uncertain economic outlook and the need for structural reform.

And shares in Asia traded cautiously ahead of Chinese growth data next week. China is expected to post second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) numbers on Monday, after a slew of disappointing trade and manufacturing reports. Investors' nerves were piqued on Friday by reports that the Chinese finance minister was forecasting annual growth of only 7 percent, below the country's official growth target of 7.5 percent.

(Poll: Will China Experience a 'Hard Landing' in 2013?)

"We see no hard landing but rather steady growth. Our 7.7 percent GDP forecast is based on a stronger consumption component, making up for the slowdown in investment," wrote Steve Wang, research director at Reorient Markets, in a note.

My Blog: Essay On Public Speaking Skills,Preparation Of A Speech

Essay On Public Speaking Skills,Preparation Of A Speech

Public speaking is an art; and like every other art, it has to be learnt, both in practice and theory. For a man to say that he will never deliver a speech. until he has learnt to speak, is like saying that he will never go into the water until he has learnt to swim. One cannot learn to speak in public without speaking in public. In both cases, one has to learn by practice; and no amount of theory without practice will be of any avail.

A speech should always be carefully prepared beforehand. Preparation includes collection, selection and arrangement. First, collect materials for the speech -- ideas, arguments, facts, illustrations bearing on the subject. Jot these down as they come to mind. Then select the most appropriate, rejecting the rest. Lastly, arrange the selected thoughts in an orderly and logical plan. Without all this, the speech with be badly arranged. rambling. disproportioned and full of repetitions. At first it is a good thing to write the speech out in full; for -writing maketh an exact man".

The written speech , however, should never be learnt by heart. Memorizing is a fatal mistake. It turns the speech into a mere recitation; and reciting is not nearly so effective as speaking direct to the audience. Then, the reciter is bound hand and foot by his memorized words; whereas a speaker must be free to alter, omit, Or
add as he sees his audience requires it. Lastly, there is the danger of collapse. If the verbal memory fails, and the next sentence is forgotten, the speaker is lost and he may break down in the middle of his speech. Let the points of the speech and the order in which they come be kept clear in the mind; the actual words will come as they are wanted.

In public speaking the management of the voice is very important. Some speakers speak too low and cannot be heard well in a large hall. Some shout, and their voices are drowned by the echoes. Some talk so fast that they cannot be followed; and some speak so slowly as to tire their hearers' patience. The speaker should speak clearly, for all to hear; he should vary the intonation of his voice to avoid monotony and to enforce his meaning; and he should know when to make effective pauses.

Above all, a speaker should watch his audience and speak to it directly, so as to -get across" to his hearers what he wants to say as ?persuasively and convincingly as possible.

Penn State Sex Scandal Update: University's board authorizes settlements stemming from Sandusky case

Former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, center, is taken from court after being sentenced in Bellefonte, Pa., Oct. 9, 2012.

/ AP Photo/Matt Rourke (AP) UNIONTOWN, Pa. - Penn State's Board of Trustees announced several tentative settlements have been reached with men who claim former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused them, and voted Friday to authorize members of a committee to approve settlements on the university's behalf.

Pictures: Jerry Sandusky gets 30 to 60 years in prison

The deals are limited to a range of dollar values that the board received in a closed-door session before their public meeting Friday at a branch campus and another meeting held June 25.

The school won't be commenting on specifics until the deals have been made final, which could happen in the coming weeks. University president Rodney Erickson called approving the settlement offers "another important step toward the resolution of claims from Sandusky's victims."

"As we have previously said, the university intends to deal with these individuals in a fair and expeditious manner, with due regard to their privacy," Erickson said in a statement issued after the settlement resolution was approved.

Sandusky, 69, was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse, including violent attacks on boys inside school facilities, after a three-week trial last summer in which eight victims testified against him. He is serving a 30- to 60-year prison term and maintains he was wrongfully convicted. He is pursuing appeals.

The university said in a statement that "no settlement agreements have been signed and the discussion with counsel for the various individuals remains confidential."

More than 30 have come forward with sex abuse claims involving Sandusky. The school said it won't comment until settlements have been finalized, executed and delivered.

The firm of Feinberg Rozen LLP has been hired to help the university reach the settlements. The firm has helped broker mass litigation settlements stemming from incidents as varied as the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Virginia Tech shooting massacre.

The university's general counsel, Stephen Dunham, declined to comment on the ongoing settlement process.

The board was meeting at its branch campus in Fayette County, about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

How to fix iPhone 3g error 1015 on windows

In this article, we would suggest you how to fix iPhone 3g error 1015 on windows.

Before helping you with the steps, the first basic step we need to follow, when ever we get 1015 error for the first time, is to press the power and home button, both at the same time on your iPhone to reset the phone and if the problem still persists, then you need to follow the given steps one by one:

Step 1: You need to download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone3G and then download Recboot on windows.

Step 2:

Download the latest version if Apple iTunes. If you already have iTunes installed on your? computer, update it using the update option.

Step 3:

Switch your iPhone into recovery mode.

Step 4:

Start Recboot.

Step 5:

Now connect your iPhone usning USB to your PC and while holding the Shift key, click on the ?Restore? option in iTunes and browse your iOS 4.2.1 file

Step 6:

You need to wait till your iTunes restores you iPhone to iOS 4.2.1. In the end of the process, after some time you will get the Error 1015 in iTunes, near the end of the process. You need not worry about that, because now we will use recboot to rectify this error. As soon as the error occurs, your iPhone will automatically switch into recovery mode. Now click on the ?Exit Recovery? button in the Recboot window. Your iPhone will restart and boot normally.

If you face any issue in restoring process or the iPhone does not restart even after pressing the ? Exit Recovery? button in Recboot, and you still get the same error on your iPhone, I recommend you to do the Jailbreaking process with Redsn0w 0.9.6b1.

Note: The Jailbreaking process can be done with any of the versions of Redsn0w which start with 0.9.6.

Note: For iPhone 3G wishing to unlock the phone for using with different carriers should not use Redsn0w because Redsn0w will? update the phone baseband to the latest version, which will make unlocking the iPhone practically impossible.

You need to follow the below-given steps to jailbreak iPhone 3G with Redsn0w 0.9.6 b1:

  1. Firstly, you need to download either iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.0 (which ever is the preferred one) for iPhone 3G.
  2. Next step is to update the firmware of the phone to the latest downloaded firmware(.ipsw file). This can be done by using the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 for Windows using this link: redsn0w_win_0.9.6b1.zip
  4. extract the downloaded zip file and run Redsn0w.
  5. Click the ?Browse? button and select the .ipsw file for the downloaded firmware.
  6. Click the ?Next? button. Redsn0w will start patching the kernel and will prepare the jailbreak data.
  7. Then, tick the checkbox corresponding to ?Install Cydia?, click ?Next?. Also select other options if required. For example, users who do not need multitasking can uncheck the ?Enable multitasking? option
  8. Turn off the device and connect the device via USB cable to the computer, and press the ?Next? button.
  9. Now switch the mode of your iPhone to DFU (this can be done by holding ?Power? button and then pushing ?Home? button along with that for about 10 seconds. After 4-5 seconds, release ?Power? the power key but keep? the ?Home? button pressed until installation begins.
  10. Wait until Redsn0w completes the jailbreaking of your iPhone.
  11. Your iPhone will automatically restart as soon as the jailbreaking procedure is finished.

Note: If windows users see the process stuck at ?Waiting for reboot? for more than 20 seconds, then try disconnecting and reconnecting the phone to the computer. Try using a different USB port on the computer, or if you used a USB hub, then connect the device directly to a USB port instead of the hub.

Marathon suspect's hearing frustrates some

BOSTON (AP) ? Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings got little satisfaction from suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's first public appearance since the deadly attacks. "Not guilty" was all he said, over and over.

The blase-looking 19-year-old, his arm in a cast and his face swollen, entered his pleas Wednesday during a seven-minute arraignment in federal court.

Bombing victims showed little reaction in the courtroom after a federal marshal warned them against any outbursts, but some made their views known afterward ? as did a group of chanting Tsaraev supporters.

"I thought that maybe he would come with a different attitude or maybe look a little different, maybe look like he cared a little bit. But he didn't show me that," said Peter Brown, whose two nephews each lost their right legs in the explosions.

Tsarnaev gave a small, lopsided smile to his two sisters upon arriving in the courtroom. He appeared to have a jaw injury and there was swelling around his left eye and cheek.

Leaning into the microphone, he told a federal judge, "Not guilty" in his Russian accent. Then he was led away in handcuffs, making a kissing gesture toward his family with his lips. One of his sisters sobbed loudly, resting her head on a woman seated next to her.

Tsarnaev, who has been hospitalized since his capture with wounds suffered in a shootout and getaway attempt, faces 30 federal charges, including using a weapon of mass destruction to kill, in connection with the April 15 twin explosions that left three people dead and more than 260 wounded. Tsarnaev also is charged in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and the carjacking of a motorist during a getaway attempt. He could get the death penalty if prosecutors choose to pursue it.

The proceedings took place in a heavily guarded courtroom packed not only with victims and their families but with police officers, the public and the media.

The Russian immigrant and former college student looked much as he did in a photo widely circulated after his arrest, his hair curly and unkempt. Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, he appeared nonchalant, almost bored, during the hearing. The cast covered his left forearm, hand and fingers.

MIT Police Chief John DiFava, who was in the courtroom, said Tsarnaev looked "smug."

"I didn't see a lot of remorse. I didn't see a lot of regret," he said. "It just seemed to me that if I was in that position, I would have been a lot more nervous, certainly scared."

DiFava added: "I just wanted to see him. I wanted to see the person that so coldly and callously killed four people, one of whom being an officer of mine."

Authorities say Tsarnaev orchestrated the bombing along with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died following a gun battle with police several days after the attack. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested on April 19, hiding in a bloodstained boat in a suburban backyard after a manhunt that paralyzed much of the Boston area.

Tsarnaev's lawyer, Judy Clarke, an expert in death penalty cases, asked that the judge enter not-guilty pleas for him, but U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler said: "I would ask him to answer."

On the same day as the arraignment, Boston's police commissioner appeared on Capitol Hill and complained to a Senate panel that the Justice Department failed to share information on terrorism threats with local officials before the bombing.

"There is a gap with information sharing at a higher level while there are still opportunities to intervene in the planning of these terrorist events," Commissioner Edward F. Davis III said.

Reporters and spectators began lining up for seats in the Boston courtroom at 7:30 a.m. as a dozen Federal Protective Service officers and bomb-sniffing dogs surrounded the courthouse. Four hours before the 3:30 p.m. hearing, the defendant arrived at the courthouse in a four-vehicle motorcade.

About a dozen Tsarnaev supporters cheered as the motorcade arrived. The demonstrators yelled, "Justice for Jahar!" as Tsarnaev is known.

Lacey Buckley, 23, said she traveled from her home in Wenatchee, Wash., to attend the arraignment. She said she believes he is innocent. "I just think so many of his rights were violated. They almost murdered an unarmed kid in a boat," she said.

A group of friends who were on the high school wrestling team with Tsarnaev at Cambridge Rindge and Latin waited in line for hours, hoping to get a seat.

One of them, Hank Alvarez, said Tsarnaev was calm, peaceful and apolitical in high school.

"Just knowing him, it's hard for me to face the fact that he did it," said Alvarez, 19, of Cambridge.

Prosecutors say Tsarnaev, a Muslim, wrote about his motivations for the bombing on the inside walls and beams of the boat. He scrawled that the U.S. government was "killing our innocent civilians," and also wrote: "We Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all."

Martin Richard, 8, Krystle Marie Campbell, 29, and Lingzi Lu, 23, were killed by the two bombs, which were fashioned out of pressure cookers, gunpowder, nails and other shrapnel. Numerous victims lost legs.

UK spies: Nations are hiring cybermercenaries

LONDON (AP) ? A British intelligence report said Wednesday that other nations are hiring hackers to launch attacks against their enemies, a trend it described as particularly worrying.

The warning over cybermercenaries came in an annual report published by Britain's Intelligence and Security Committee, a watchdog body of senior lawmakers that oversees Britain's spy agencies.

Citing testimony from British eavesdropping agency GCHQ, the report described the mercenaries as "skilled cyber professionals undertaking attacks on diverse targets such as financial institutions and energy companies.

"These groups pose a threat in their own right, but it is the combination of their capability and the objectives of their state backers which makes them of particular concern," it said.

The lawmakers didn't name any specific countries or say how widespread the practice was. The report didn't go into much further detail, but there's long been concern over the proliferation of private companies that profit from developing and distributing offensive software.

The report quoted GCHQ as saying that the electronic threat facing Britain is "at its highest level ever and is expected to rise further still" ? a warning that tracks with longstanding trends relating to the growth of cybercrime and increasing official interest in online espionage. As with past reports, lawmakers singled out Russia and China as two countries alleged to have carried out attacks over the Internet.

The report also covered issues surrounding the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, counterintelligence, and terrorism. It touched on the threat of Islamic radicalism out of Syria, where it said a significant number of British citizens had flocked in order to fight a holy war. It quoted Britain's security services as saying that "individual jihadists in Syria currently represent the most worrying emerging terrorist threat to the UK and the West" and said that there was a risk that the country's stockpile of chemical weapons could fall into the hands of extremists.

Not covered in the partially-redacted report were allegations published by the Guardian newspaper that GCHQ and its U.S. counterpart, the National Security Agency, were engaged in a global surveillance campaign aimed at securing access to as much of the world's communications as technically possible. Some of the revelations raised fears that Britain was swapping data with the United States on its own citizens to get around restrictions on domestic espionage.

A statement accompanying the report said lawmakers were investigating and would publish their findings on the program "as soon and as fully as we are able."

A spokesman for the committee said lawmakers were not immediately available for additional comment.

The Cambie $5 Menu Tasting | THE FOOD QUEEN ? Vancouver ...

I was recently invited to the Cambie with a group of bloggers to preview the launch of their new $5 food menu. The Cambie is best known for their cheap drinks and dive bar atmosphere, but they are trying to draw more attention to their food menu.?There are around 10 items on the new $5 menu and it is only available from 11:00am ? 6:00pm.

Granville Island Honey Lager

I started off with a Granville Island Honey Lager to drink. I love this beer. It is sweet and easy to drink; it?s the perfect drink for summer.

Tasting Platter

We were served a tasting platter of their pulled pork tacos, quesadillas, sausage on a bun, and Irish nachos.

Pulled pork tacos are a good safe choice because pulled pork is rarely bad. The pork was tender and the tacos were filled with lettuce and fresh salsa.

The quesadillas were filled with cheese and refried beans. A quesadilla is a quesadilla and they are pretty standard anywhere you go. I wouldn?t order one because you could just make them at home, but if you like quesadillas and just want something cheesy then this would do the trick.

The sausage on a bun was really good. They use a mild Italian sausage on a home-made bun topped with saut?ed onions and roasted red peppers. The sausage was juicy and flavourful and the buns tasted freshly made. This also comes with a German potato salad, which was also good (because it was filled with bacon).

The Irish nachos were a hit at the table. The dish is made with french fries topped with green onions, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. With that combination of ingredients you cannot fail.

Cobb Salad

The cobb salad was hearty for a salad and had lots of chicken, bacon, and egg inside. A salad doesn?t really seem like pub food/drinking food to me, but you know there will always be some person who wants a salad and this is a good option for them.

Burgers

We sampled both the mini beef and veggie burgers. I?m picky when it comes to burgers and the beef burger didn?t do it for me. Mine was over cooked and it tasted too pre formed. The veggie burger on the other hand, was actually really good. They make it with a mix of chickpeas and other chunks of vegetables and it was flavourful and had a good texture. It was like eating a good falafel on a burger bun.

Mac and Cheese

The mac and cheese is made with a nutmeg bechamel sauce and topped with a panko parmesan crust. I don?t like mac and cheese in general (I know, I?m a freak) so I?m not the best authority on it. This version wasn?t very cheesy though and it seemed more like pasta than a gooey mac and cheese.

Finding anything to eat for $5 is a challenge these days. You can?t even eat at McDonald?s for $5 anymore, so I can appreciate the effort the Cambie is making to create a cheap eats menu.?Food for $5 is never going to blow your mind, but there were plenty of good options here that I would order again.

Disclosure: I did not pay for my meal.

Recommendation:

Yes, for really cheap eats and drinks.

BlackBerry 10.1 arrives for Z10 owners on AT&T

We doubt that many of AT&T's BlackBerry users want to buy a Q10 just to get BlackBerry 10.1, and today they won't have to: the upgrade is rolling out now to the network's Z10 owners. The OS update is similar to what we've seen elsewhere, adding Skype support and HDR photography as well as improvements to both the Hub and notifications. Z10 users should get BlackBerry 10.1 over the air, although those who prefer to update the wired way can visit the source link for a download.

Ed Miliband attempts to brush off union fiasco ahead of clash with David Cameron

The Opposition leader will attempt to turn the focus back on the Tories after a week of damaging allegations about ballot-fixing in the Falkirk constituency.

Yesterday Mr Miliband set out radical proposals to end the automatic affiliation of union members Labour - a move that party figures acknowledge could cost it millions of pounds a year.

But Unite general secretary Len McCluskey confounded expectations of a furious showdown with unions by insisting he was "very comfortable" with the idea.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair hailed the plan as "a real act of leadership" and admitted that he should probably have taken the same step when he was in charge between 1994 and 2007.

Aides hope the dramatic intervention can drawn a line under the crisis that was sparked by revelations over union influence in local constituency selections.

Len McCluskey'Bold and brave': General Secretary of UNITE, Len McCluskey has praised the Labour leader's vision

The Prime Minister capitalised on the row when the two men clashed in the Commons last week, repeatedly referring to Unite's payrolling of Labour.

But Mr Miliband has attempted to open a new front in the sleaze battle by declaring his intention to crack down on MPs with second jobs.

He said a Labour government would "at least" impose a limit on outside earnings - highlighting the number of Conservatives who continue practising law or working with businesses.

He also urged the resumption of stalled talks on party funding.

Downing Street dismissed the attack as a "smokescreen", and said Mr Miliband had not gone far enough to address the issues raised by the Falkirk row.

In his speech, Mr Miliband said events in the constituency represented "part of the death-throes of the old politics", and he hoped to usher in an "open, transparent and trusted" system which would engage more union members directly in the party.

Rather than being automatically affiliated to Labour unless they opt out of their union's political levy, union members should be asked to make an active decision to join the party by opting in, he said.

"I do not want any individual to be paying money to the Labour Party in affiliation fees unless they have deliberately chosen to do so," said Mr Miliband.

The Labour leader also announced plans to establish a code of conduct for would-be election candidates and to introduce primary elections for Labour's next candidate for London mayor.

Mr Miliband defended his choice of former Labour general secretary Lord (Ray) Collins of Highbury to conduct negotiations on the implementation of his reforms, which he said would be completed before the 2015 general election.

Lord Collins is a long-time union official, who as assistant general secretary of the TGWU helped create Unite as Britain's largest union - and Labour's biggest donor - through a merger with Amicus.

"You have got to have somebody who not only knows the party's finances, knows the way these things work and is in a position to deliver change," said the Labour leader.

"From my discussions with him, he knows the changes I want and he will help deliver it."

Mr McCluskey described Mr Miliband's speech as "bold and brave", telling the BBC: "It may well be a historic one if Ed's vision comes to fruition.

"He seemed to be saying that he wanted to see tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of ordinary trade unionists actively playing an active role within the Labour Party. That's something I very much welcome."

Placido Domingo in hospital in Spain with embolism

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Opera singer Placido Domingo is in the hospital after suffering a blockage in an artery of the lungs.

Domingo's representative says the 72-year-old is expected to make a full recovery but will have to miss several appearances scheduled for later this month. He was admitted to the hospital Monday in Madrid.

Doctors say the pulmonary embolism was caused by a blood clot.

The singer's representative, Nancy Seltzer, says doctors have asked the Spanish tenor and conductor to rest for three to four weeks, but that healing time varies. His return to the stage will depend on how quickly he regains his strength.

It's not the first time Domingo has faced a serious medical condition.

Domingo returned to the stage just 45 days after undergoing colon cancer surgery in 2010 and has maintained a vigorous schedule and displayed an uncommon vitality at an age when most stars have stepped away from the spotlight.

He is the most visible opera singer in the world and has performed more than 140 roles, expanding his repertoire to include baritone roles in the past half-decade. The Three Tenors member also recently was named the new goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for his efforts in spreading classical music around the world.

Domingo has canceled his five performances in Daniel Catan's "Il Postino," which were to begin July 17 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, as well as an appearance on July 21 at Plaza Mayor.

At least five dead in oil train derailment

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec - As firefighters doused still burning oil tanker cars, more bodies were recovered Sunday in this devastated town in eastern Quebec, raising the death toll to five after a runaway train derailed, igniting explosions and fires that destroyed the downtown district. With dozens of people reported missing, authorities feared they could find more bodies once they reached the hardest-hit areas.

Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said Sunday that about 40 people have been reported missing, but cautioned that the number could fluctuate up or down.

"We met many people who had reported family members missing. Right now I can tell you about 40," Brunet said.

Brunet confirmed two more deaths early Sunday afternoon after confirming two people were found dead overnight. One death was confirmed Saturday. The charred remains have been sent to Montreal for identification.

All but one of the 73 cars were filled with oil, which was being transported from North Dakota's Bakken oil region to a refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The eruptions early Saturday morning sent residents of Lac-Megantic scrambling through the streets under the intense heat of towering fireballs and a red glow that illuminated the night sky. Local Fire Chief Denis Lauzon likened the charred scene to "a war zone."

"This is really terrible. Our community is grieving and it is taking its toll on us," Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said.

On Sunday afternoon, Prime Minister Stephen Harper toured the town where a large part of the downtown area has been leveled.

"This is an unbelievable disaster," Harper said. "This is a very big disaster in human terms as the extent of this becomes increasingly obvious."

Harper said the whole country is worried about the missing and is praying for the town.

"This is an enormous area, 30 buildings just completely destroyed, for all intents and purposes incinerated," Harper said. "There isn't a family that is not affected by this."

The search for victims in the charred debris was hampered because two tanker cars were still burning Sunday morning, sparking fears of more potentially fatal blasts.

Lauzon said firefighters are staying 500 feet (150 meters) from the burning tankers, which are being doused with water and foam to keep them from overheating.

The multiple blasts came over a span of several hours in the town of 6,000, which is about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east of Montreal and about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of the Maine border. It is a picturesque lakeside town in Quebec's Eastern Townships.

The derailment caused at least five tanker cars to explode in the downtown district, a popular area packed with bars that often bustles on summer weekend nights. Police said the first explosion tore through the town shortly after 1 a.m. local time. The fire then spread to several homes.

Brunet said he couldn't say where the bodies were found exactly because the families have not been notified. Many feared for the lives of those who were at the Musi-Cafe bar where dozens of people were enjoying themselves in the wee hours of a glorious summer night.

Residents who gathered outside a community shelter Sunday hugged and wiped tears as they braced for bad news about missing loved ones.

Henri-Paul Audette headed there with hope of reuniting with his missing brother. Audette, 69, said his brother's apartment was next to the railroad tracks, very close to the spot where the train derailed.

"I haven't heard from him since the accident," he said. "I had thought ... that I would see him."

Another man who came to the shelter said it's difficult to explain the impact this incident has had on life in Lac-Megantic. About a third of the community was forced out of their homes. David Vachon said he has one friend whose sister is missing and another who is still searching for his mother.

The cause of the accident was believed to be a runaway train, the railroads operator said.

Edward Burkhardt, the president and CEO of Rail World Inc., the parent company of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, said the train had been parked uphill of Lac-Megantic because the engineer had finished his run. The tanker cars somehow came loose and sped downhill nearly seven miles (11 kilometers) into the town before derailing.

"We've had a very good safety record for these 10 years," Burkhardt said of the decade-old railroad. "Well, I think we've blown it here."

Joe McGonigle, Montreal, Maine & Atlantic's vice president of marketing, said the company believes the brakes were the cause. He said the rail company has been in touch with Canada's Transportation Safety Board.

"Somehow those brakes were released and that's what is going to be investigated," McGonigle said in a telephone interview Sunday. "We're pretty comfortable saying it is the brakes. The train was parked, it was tied up. The brakes were secured. Somehow it got loose."

The company later released a statement that said air brakes used to hold the locomotive in place may have been released after the train was parked.

Lauzon, the fire chief, said that firefighters in a nearby community were called to a locomotive blaze on the same train a few hours before the derailment. Lauzon said he could not provide additional details about that fire since it was in another jurisdiction. Nantes Fire Chief Patrick Lambert couldn't be immediately reached, but McGonigle confirmed the fire department showed up after the first engineer tied up and went to a local hotel and after someone reported a fire.

"We know that one of our employees from our engineering department showed up at the same time to assist the fire department. Exactly what they did is being investigated so the engineer wasn't the last man to touch that train, we know that, but we're not sure what happened," McGonigle said.

McGonigle said there was no reason to suspect any criminal or terror-related activity.

Because of limited pipeline capacity in North Dakota's Bakken region and in Canada, oil producers are increasingly using railroads to transport much of the oil to refineries on the East, Gulf and West coasts, as well as inland. The Canadian Railway Association recently estimated that as many as 140,000 carloads of crude oil will be shipped on Canada's tracks this year. That's up from just 500 carloads in 2009.

Harper has called railroad transit "far more environmentally challenging" while trying to persuade the Obama administration to approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. He declined to comment on

The proliferation of oil trains has raised concerns of a major derailment like this. McGonigle said it is a safe way to transport oil.

"There's much more hazardous material that moves by rail than crude oil. We think it is safe. We think we have a safe operation. No matter what mode of transportation you are going to have incidents. That's been proven," McGonigle said. "This is an unfortunate incident."

Myrian Marotte, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Red Cross in Lac-Megantic, said there are about 2,000 evacuees and said 163 stayed at their operations center overnight.

Patrons gathered at a nearby bar were sent running for their lives after the thunderous crash and wall of fire blazed through the early morning sky early Saturday. Bernard Theberge, who was outside on the bar's patio at the time of the crash, feared for the safety of those inside the popular Musi-Cafe when the first explosion went off.

"People started running and the fire ignited almost instantaneously," he said.

"It was like a movie," said Theberge, who considered himself fortunate to escape with only second-degree burns on his right arm. "Explosions as if it were scripted - but this was live."

According to Montreal Maine & Atlantic's website, the company owns more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) of track serving Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick.

Montreal, Maine and Atlantic carried nearly 3 million barrels of oil across Maine last year. Each tank car holds some 30,000 gallons (113,600 liters) of oil.

Maine state officials were notified regarding concerns about the smoke from the fire but staff meteorologists don't believe it will have a significant impact, Peter Blanchard of the state Department of Environmental Protection said Sunday.

The Maine environmental agency had previously begun developing protection plans for areas in the state through which the oil trains travel.

But Glen Brand, director of the environmentalist Sierra Club's Maine chapter, said the Quebec derailment is reason enough to call for an immediate moratorium on the rail transport of oil through the state.

"This tragic accident is part of the larger problem of moving oil through Maine and northern New England," Brand said. "It reinforces the importance of moving away from dirty fossil fuels that expose the people of northern New England, Maine and Quebec to a host of dangerous risks."

French President Francois Hollande's office issued a statement offering condolences to the victims in the predominantly French-speaking Canadian province.

Patient transitions among acute care hospitals may further spread

CHICAGO -- Antibiotic-resistant superbugs like carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) present a challenge to healthcare professionals as patients move from different care settings and facilities, unknowingly spreading healthcare-associated infections. In a new study, researchers screened all patients for CRE at admission to a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH). They found patients colonized with CRE coming into the LTACH from hospitals, but they also found transmission occurring among patients in the LTACH. LTACHs provide similar care as hospitals but focus on patients who, on average, stay more than 25 days.

The findings of this study provide an indication of the prevalence of CRE in hospitalized patients in one specific region, as well as the frequency of transmission based on transitions between healthcare facilities. The study is published in the August issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

"Identification of asymptomatic CRE carriers admitted to LTACHs may help identify patients who could benefit from interventions that reduce risks for subsequent CRE transmission and break cycles of resistance that develop when patients move between healthcare facilities," said Costi Sifri, MD, an author of the study.

Recent research has shown that LTACHs can play important roles in the regional transmission of CRE. These facilities are reservoirs of healthcare-associated infections, since patients admitted to these facilities are highly susceptible to CRE colonization due to risk factors such as complex medical conditions, extended hospitalizations, invasive medical devices and unnecessary antibiotic use.

Researchers at the University of Virginia Health System prospectively screened patients admitted to a 40-bed central Virginia LTACH for CRE colonization. Additionally, weekly surveillance for CRE was performed on all patients in the facility. During the 24-month study period, 262 patients received care at the LTACH and 20 had positive CRE cultures.

The investigators identified six patients positive for CRE on admission who had no known history of CRE infection or colonization. Two of these patients were admitted from the affiliated academic hospital and four were admitted from four separate regional hospitals.

Additionally, six patients had a prior history of CRE colonization or infection and seven patients had no known history of CRE infection or colonization, but tested positive during hospitalization.

In a commentary published alongside the study, L. Silvia Munoz-Price, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Miami notes "healthcare professionals who work in this field are concerned with the inter-facility, inter-regional, and inter-continental spread of CREs. However, we are attempting to solve a population health problem by using snapshots of what occurs in our own hospitals or within a limited set of facilities where we have professional networks... over simplifications are hindering us from determining the extent in which all the contributing factors are affecting this dynamic population model."
