World powers push Syria's opposition to unite

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Efforts to draw together the fragmented foes of Syrian President Bashar Assad could lead to direct talks between the leader's regime and his opponents, a key official said after talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Friday proposed plans to broker discussions for a political transition in Syria ? amid the paralysis at the U.N. Security Council which has cast a pall over the annual gathering of world leaders in New York.

Zebari told The Associated Press in an interview that he made the offer to bring together Syria's regime and opposition at a meeting Friday between nine representatives of anti-Assad groups and the Friends of Syria ? a coalition which includes the United States, the European Union and the Arab League.

He acknowledged that the U.N. and Arab League joint envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, would need to take the plan forward.

Establishing a more coherent opposition is seen as a means of increasing pressure on the Syrian leadership amid Russia and China's decisions to veto three Western-backed resolutions aimed at forcing Assad to end the violence.

Rebels on Friday made their broadest assault yet to drive Assad's forces out of Aleppo, Syria's largest city. Activists claim that since the 18-month-old conflict began, more than 30,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

Syria's opposition has been criticized as hopelessly fractured and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer, though Western officials say they are beginning to see tentative signs of progress.

Revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour are becoming increasingly organized, U.S. officials insist. In Idlib, in northwestern Syria, and Deir al-Zour, in the country's east, the local councils are taking charge of municipal duties, restoring power supplies and cleaning streets.

Talks Friday focused on efforts to boost cooperation between the rival groups, provide them with millions of dollars more in non-lethal equipment, and help them cement authority in areas freed from the Assad regime's control.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the meeting.

Mouaz Moustafa, a 27-year-old activist with the Washington-based "Coalition for a Democratic Syria," which lobbies on behalf of the civilian councils and was involved in the talks, said the local groups could provide the roots of a post-Assad Syria if they are supported with funding.

"It will be undermined if it's not coupled with financial support," he said. "You have civilian councils right now. If you don't help them, you miss an opportunity. Without money, they lose credibility, viability and power."

He said in one instance, France had supplied about $13,000 to the Maarat al-Nuaman civilian council, in northwestern Syria, which allowed them to clean streets, rebuild a bread factory and pay for policemen.

Moustafa said the councils were crucial for the country to re-emerge under civilian rule. If they failed, it would risk emboldening military commanders to create their own fiefdoms in liberated areas, or Islamic extremists ? better armed and with money ? to set up their own power centers.

U.S. officials acknowledged the importance of helping civilian activists, rather than fighters, to prepare to provide services when the country's leadership falls.

"People with guns who don't know how to have bread baked are quickly going to lose credibility on the street. People with guns who can't make the lights come back on are going to quickly lose credibility on the street," said a senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the talks.

During talks Friday, Clinton pledged $15 million in new non-lethal equipment ? mainly communications equipment ? and $30 in million humanitarian assistance to Syria's opposition. In total, the U.S. has offered $130 million in humanitarian supplies and about $40 million in equipment such as including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras. Britain and France have also offered millions of dollars worth of aid supplies and equipment.

At the General Assembly on Friday, Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu warned of the risks that Syria's civil war could spread to other Middle East nations. "The Syrian regime deploys every instrument to turn the legitimate struggle of the Syrian people into a sectarian war, which will engulf the entire region into flames," he said.

On Saturday, nations including Uruguay, Denmark, Portugal, Sudan and Angola were scheduled to address the assembly.

VOLLEYBALL: Eastern Loses Heartbreaker to Southern Utah - SWX ...

by EWU Athletics

In the first-ever Big Sky matchup between the Eastern Washington University volleyball team and the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah, the Eagles were handed a tough 3-2 loss on their home court in Cheney, Wash. Despite a dominating performance in the second and third sets, Eastern could not hold on, as it dropped its 16th-consecutive match and fifth in the league season, 25-18, 16-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11.

With the win, Southern Utah improves to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in Big Sky play. Still searching for that elusive first win, Eastern will take on Northern Arizona on Friday (Sept. 28) at Reese Court starting at 7 p.m.

The Eagles committed 10 offensive errors in the first set, leading to a 25-18 loss. But after dropping the opener on their home floor, the Eagles responded with a vengeance. Eastern had 30 kills with just seven errors in the second and third sets for a combined .311 attack percentage. Eastern's defensive was equally sharp, holding the Thunderbirds to just .109 hitting.

Eastern had the momentum on its side heading into the fourth set, but Southern Utah scored a quick two points to start it off, which shifted the energy in Reese Court just slightly. The Eagles continued to fight and kept it close the entire way. There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the set, but SUU used a late 6-2 run to eventually capture it, 25-22.

In the decisive fifth, Eastern dug itself into a dangerous 6-1 hole. But a timely service error by SUU sparked a 6-1 run for the Eagles, and they managed to tie it up at 7-7. Following a timeout called by Southern Utah, the Thunderbirds blocked five of the next six EWU attack attempts to take an irrevocable 14-8 lead. Senior Cora Kellerman saved three match points for her team with two kills and a solo block, but SUU put it away with a kill by senior Cashaana Renfro.

"We just got timid," said EWU head coach Lisa Westlake. "We need to be tougher in these situations. We were up 2-1 after the third set, but then they started serving harder and we eased up on ours. Then our passing started to go as well. It was great to see us compete, but we need to finish."

Eastern was led by sophomore Kelsey Julian (Kennewick, Wash.), who finished with a career-high 13 kills on a sizzling .550 attack percentage. She also had five digs, two blocks and an ace for the Eags.

"Kelsey did a phenomenal job," commended Westlake. "She has been competing hard in practice, and her numbers have just been improving and improving. We gave her a chance tonight, and she went in there and took care of business."

Freshman Allie Schumacher (Puyallup, Wash.) also tallied a career high 13 kills, and had six digs as a starter. Kellerman (La Conner, Wash.) registered her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Senior setter Laney Brown (Waterville, Wash.) finished the night with 50 assists - just two shy of her career-high set back in 2010. She also had eight digs and two kills. Junior Celeste Crosby (Spokane, Wash.) suited up as libero for EWU, and picked up a career-high 22 digs.

Eastern's middle blockers, Talia Fermantez and Kellen Barfield, combined for 20 kills and seven blocks.

As a team, EWU tallied eight total blocks, but the Thunderbirds put up an impressive 17. SUU's Renfro finished with 11 - the best blocking performance by any player in the Big Sky this season. Senior Ana Mailoto, currently the No. 1 hitter in league-only statistics, had 25 kills and 16 digs for SUU.

Futurity.org ? Genes reveal four breast cancer subtypes

WASHINGTON U. ? ST. LOUIS / UNC-CHAPEL HILL (US) ? One of the most deadly subtypes of breast cancer is genetically more similar to ovarian tumors than to other breast cancers, report researchers.

The most comprehensive analysis yet of breast cancer, published online September 23 in Nature, suggests that most basal-like breast tumors and ovarian tumors have similar genetic origins and potentially could be treated with the same drugs, says the study?s co-leader Matthew J. Ellis, chair in medical oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Basal-like tumors account for about 10 percent of all breast cancers and disproportionately affect younger women and those who are African-American.

The new research is part of The Cancer Genome Atlas project, which brings together leading genetic sequencing centers, including The Genome Institute at Washington University, to identify and catalog mutations involved in many common cancers. The effort is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

?With this study, we?re one giant step closer to understanding the genetic origins of the four major subtypes of breast cancer,? says Ellis, who treats breast cancer patients at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University.

?Now, we can investigate which drugs work best for patients based on the genetic profiles of their tumors. For basal-like breast tumors, it?s clear they are genetically more similar to ovarian tumors than to other breast cancers. Whether they can be treated the same way is an intriguing possibility that needs to be explored.?

New framework

Currently, for example, basal-like breast tumors often are treated like many other breast cancers, using anthracycline-based chemotherapy. But another of Ellis?s studies recently showed that women with basal-like tumors don?t benefit from these drugs, which also have severe side effects.

At the very least, he says, the new data indicates that clinical trials should be designed to avoid the use of these drugs in basal-like tumors.

?This study has now provided a near complete framework for the genetic causes of breast cancer, which will significantly impact clinical medicine in the coming years as these genetic markers are evaluated as possible markers of therapeutic responsiveness,? says study co-leader Charles M. Perou, professor of molecular oncology?of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and member of the?UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As part of the new research, a nationwide consortium of researchers analyzed tumors from 825 women with breast cancer. The scientists used six different technologies to examine subsets of the tumors for defects in DNA, RNA (a close chemical cousin of DNA) and proteins. Nearly 350 tumors were analyzed using all six technologies.

?By tying together those different data sets, we can build a story around the biology of each breast cancer subtype that is dictated by the genome, interpreted by the RNA and played out by the proteins at work inside each tumor,? says co-author Elaine Mardis, PhD, co-director of The Genome Institute.

?These data can serve as a backdrop for other questions about how particular mutations affect survival or response to certain drugs.?

Four subtypes

The study confirmed the existence of four main subtypes of breast cancer: Luminal A, luminal B, HER2, and basal-like. The latter includes most triple-negative breast tumors, so-named because they lack receptors for the hormones estrogen, progesterone, or human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2). These tumors often are aggressive and do not respond to therapies that target hormone receptors or to standard chemotherapies.

Across the four subtypes, mutations in only three genes?TP53, PIK3CA, and GATA3?occurred in more than 10 percent of patients? tumors. But, the scientists found unique genetic and molecular signatures within each of the subtypes. Their findings add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that tumors should be cataloged and treated based on the genes that are disrupted rather than the location in the body.

In general, compared to the other subtypes, basal-like and HER2 tumors had the highest mutation rates but the shortest list of significantly mutated genes. These genes are thought to be major drivers of cancer progression.

For example, 80 percent of basal-like tumors had mutations in the TP53 gene, which have been linked to poor outcomes. About 20 percent of the tumors also had inherited mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, which are known to increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

?This suggests that it only takes a few hits to key genes that drive cancer growth,? Mardis explains.

New targets for treatment

A high frequency of TP53 mutations also occurs in ovarian cancer, the researchers note. Overall, the genetic profiles of basal-like and ovarian tumors were strikingly similar, with widespread genomic instability and mutations occurring at similar frequencies and in similar genes.

Finding new drug targets for basal-like breast tumors is critical, and the research suggests that patients with mutations in the BRCA genes may benefit from PARP inhibitors or platinum-based chemotherapy, which are already used to treat ovarian cancer.

By comparison, luminal cancers (which include estrogen receptor-positive and progesterone-receptor positive tumors) had the lowest mutation frequencies and longer lists of significantly mutated genes. This suggests defects in multiple genetic pathways can lead to the development of luminal breast cancers.

Most patients with luminal A cancer have good outcomes, and the most common mutation in that subtype occurred in PIK3CA, which was present in 45 percent of tumors. TP53 mutations only occurred in 12 percent.

Some patients with luminal B tumors do well but many experience recurrence years after treatment. Interestingly, the most common mutations in these tumors occurred in TP53 (linked to poor outcomes) and PIK3CA (linked to good outcomes), which may explain the disparate results seen in patients with this subtype.

?Now, we?re much closer to understanding the true origins of the different types of breast cancer,? Ellis says.

?With this information, physicians and scientists can look at their own samples to correlate patients? tumor profiles with treatment response and overall outcomes. That?s the challenge for the future?translating a patient?s genetic profile into new treatment strategies.?

Additional investigators contributed to the findings from UNC Chapel Hill, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Texas, Indiana University, Duke University, Stanford University, University of Pittsburgh, and University of Chicago, among other institutions.

The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health as well as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the US Department of Defense through the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Wife asks Iran's Ahmadinejad for help finding missing husband

As Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prepares to speak to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, an electronic billboard in Times Square and subway placards around the city will remind the Iranian president and U.N. delegates of an American who has been missing in Iran for more than five years.

"I'm trying to make the public realize that my husband is the second-longest held hostage in American history," said Christine Levinson, wife of former FBI agent Robert Levinson. "It's been five and a half years since he disappeared on Kish Island and two years since we received a video from his captors . . . and we still have no information about Bob since the day he disappeared."

"This week, with the UN General Assembly in New York," Christine Levinson told ABC News, "we are trying to get the whole world's attention. I am hoping we will finally be able to get him home."

Robert Levinson, a father of seven and grandfather of two, began working as a private detective after leaving the FBI. He disappeared in March 9, 2007 while on a business trip to the Iranian resort island of Kish. U.S. officials believe he is being held by unknown captors in Southwest Asia.

Five months after his disappearance, against the advice of the U.S. government, Christine Levinson and her son traveled to Tehran to conduct their own investigation, but the trip yielded no results.

The Levinson family received a so-called "proof of life" video in late 2010 showing Levinson, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, in deteriorating health. Levinson, who was 62 at the time, addressed Christine as "my beautiful, my loving, my loyal wife" and referred to his 33 years of service to the federal government before pleading for help from U.S. authorities.

Christine Levinson is now appealing directly to Ahmadinejad, who is under the international spotlight as he prefers to give his final speech to the U.N. as Iranian president. He leaves office next year. "In the past he has said that he will investigate and he will have his people investigate," Levinson told CNN. "He has promised to help us. So we need to get him in touch with whoever can help us get the job done and get Bob home."

Pictures of Levinson began appearing on subway placards in Midtown Manhattan last week. The signs, and a Times Square billboard, feature a picture of Levinson next to the word "Missing" and ask United Nations delegates to "encourage the Islamic Republic of Iran to work with the U.S. to bring Bob home."

This year the FBI offered a $1 million reward for information. The case has frustrated investigators, whose diplomatic strategies have failed.

"We ask ourselves how is it possible that someone -- especially someone 6'4? and (then) 225 pounds -- disappears without a trace," reads a statement from the Levinsons on the family's website.

Iranian representatives did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

GE plans medical technology acquisitions in Germany

FRANKFURT | Sat Sep 22, 2012 6:55am EDT

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - General Electric plans to make acquisitions in Germany to raise its market share in CAT scan and MRI technology, the company's new Germany chief told a magazine.

"Especially in the high-end segment we want to double, in some areas even triple, our market share," Volker Wetekam told Wirtschafts Woche weekly, according to an excerpt of an article to be published on Monday.

He said the company plans to spend a "considerable" sum on acquisitions, without elaborating.

"We are looking for companies that move us forward in terms of technology, not just in Germany but globally. We are currently holding talks," he said.

General Electric employs about 1,800 people at its medical technology business in Germany. It plans to hire about 100 more staff to expand its research department in the country and form new partnerships with university clinics, the article said.

BlackBerry outage in Europe and Africa

TORONTO (AP) -- The chief executive of struggling BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion apologized Friday after an outage in Europe and Africa interrupted service for customers on the very day Apple Inc. released its new iPhone 5.

RIM announced the issues in postings on Facebook and Twitter on Friday, and later said it resolved the issue. The service disruption lasted up to three hours for some BlackBerry users.

The outage brought up unpleasant memories of last year's troubles with emails and chat messages that left many users bereft for up to three days.

The timing could not have been worse, coming as lines formed outside of Apple stores in a number of cities as the new iPhone 5 went on sale.

RIM shares plunged 6.5 percent, or 45 cents, to $6.45 in trading on the Nasdaq.

Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said up to six percent of RIM's users may have been affected. He said the company is conducting a full analysis and will report back. No reason for the outage was given.

"I want to apologize to those BlackBerry customers in Europe and Africa who experienced an impact in their quality of service earlier this morning. The BlackBerry service is now fully restored and I can report that no data or messages were lost," Heins said in a statement posted on RIM's website. "Preliminary analysis suggests that those customers may have experienced a maximum delay of 3 hours in the delivery and reception of their messages."

RIM initially said the outage included the Middle East, but RIM spokeswoman Amy Jones later said it did not.

"It's the worst timing," Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said. "This is bad publicity and it's very unfortunate. But frankly the attention is all going to be on Apple today, all the weekend -and frankly until the end of the year. Frankly, it's kind of irrelevant. The only thing that's relevant is when they are going to come out with their new phones."

Misek said he thinks the transition to the BlackBerry 10 software intended to run their new line of smartphones, could be a cause of the outage. RIM is preparing to launch the new phones early next year, after a series of delays.

"We think that switch over is causing the difficulties," Misek said.

The latest outage comes as customers are abandoning their BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.

RIM is facing its most difficult period in its history. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company is laying off thousands this year as it transitions to new software platform that has been deemed critical to its survival.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, called it ironic that an outage would happen that the day Apple is releasing the iPhone 5. Gillis noted that RIM is trying to get its operating centers ready for the new BlackBerrys at the same time that it's laying off thousands and turning over senior management in a time of crisis.

"Systems are going to break when you are in that kind of mode. It's the worst possible environment to try and launch a critical, make or break product," Gillis said.

RIM was once Canada's most valuable company with a market value of more than $80 billion in June 2008, but the stock has plummeted since, from over $140 share to less than $7. RIM's decline is evoking memories of Nortel, another Canadian tech giant, which declared bankruptcy in 2009.

How to use Passbook on your iPhone

Apple iPhone 5

One of the?most useful ? but likely misunderstood ? new features introduced in Apple's iOS 6 software for the iPhone is called Passbook. At first glance, the app might even seem like it doesn't serve a purpose. While it might not exactly be well-explained, it can simplify the process of keeping track of various passes ? such as tickets, coupons, and gift cards ? once you know how it works.

Step 1: Downloading supported apps

In order to do things with Passbook, you need to have apps that work with it installed on your phone. Getting them is easy enough: When you load up the Passbook app for the first time, you'll see a screen describing what it can do, along with a button that, when touched, whisks you away to a special Passbook section of the App Store.

Once there, you'll see a current list of all the Passbook-compatible apps available for download. They include those from United Airlines, American Airlines, Fandango, Target, Walgreens, and more. For the purpose of this article, we've downloaded the latter two.

Step 2: Finding things to add to Passbook

In the case of Walgreens' app (download for iPhone) you can add the chain's rewards card, called Balance Rewards, to your Passbook. This involves scanning your physical card's barcode or entering your info, after which you're able to store a virtual version of the card in Passbook. You also have the option of selecting your nearest store, so that when you're near it your phone will automatically display your card.

Target's app (download for iPhone) gives you to special mobile coupons redeemable at your local store. The latest version of the app lets you add these coupons to Passbook so they can be quickly accessed without having to load the actual Target app.

For other apps, such as Fandango and Major League Baseball (MLB), you can add movie and event tickets to Passbook in a similar fashion, then have them scanned at the theater or sporting venue. Airline passes for United, American Airlines, and Lufthansa will be automatically displayed when you arrive at the airport, and Passbook can even alert you to your gate number and any changes to your flight that might occur.

Step 3: Using Passbook in everyday life

As we mentioned earlier, with location-aware Passbook passes you can have your iPhone alert you when you're near somewhere they can be used. For example, with the Walgreens Balance Rewards card, a notification will appear on the iPhone's lock screen anytime you're near the Walgreens you've designated as your home store. Sliding the notification causes the virtual card to slide onto the screen so that it can be scanned. Pressing the menu button makes it slide back off so you can unlock your phone.

Passes such as the Target mobile coupons aren't location-aware, so you actually need to run the Passbook app and tap on them so they can be scanned. Tickets, boarding passes, and gift cards can be set to automatically alert you when you're near where they can be used. It really just depends on the way the apps that create the passes are designed.

When you're done using a pass, you get to use one of our favorite features ? well, at least the most fun ? of Passbook, the shredder. Tapping the small information icon on a pass will flip it over to reveal settings, such as the ability to turn its location-awareness on and off, or determine whether or not it'll display on your lock screen. If you tap the trash can icon, you'll be asked if you want to delete the pass. Tap yes and an animated shredder will slide up the screen, cutting the pass into strips, removing it from Passbook.

Handy, and sure to get better

Passbook has only been available for a matter of days, but we're already finding it pretty handy. Its usefulness will only improve as more retailers and businesses design their apps to make use of it. Before long, we'll all hopefully have a lot more room in our wallets because of fewer cards and papers we'll need to worry about losing thanks to this handy app.

Furyk races out to a 64 and the lead at East Lake

(AP) ? Jim Furyk, the only American on the Ryder Cup team without a win this year, put himself in position Friday to join them.

Furyk made seven birdies through 10 holes at East Lake ? including seven 3s to start the round ? until he missed a few greens on the back nine that slowed his momentum. He wound up with a 6-under 64, giving him a one-shot lead over Justin Rose going into the weekend at the Tour Championship.

As for anyone questioning whether Furyk should have been a pick for the Ryder Cup?

He was more bothered by missing a 5-foot par putt on the 18th hole than what anyone thinks about his game or being in the Ryder Cup for the eighth straight time. With 16 wins, including a U.S. Open, and having qualified for every U.S. team since 1997, Furyk stopped believing he had to prove himself a long time ago.

"Look at the way I play golf ? the way I swing the golf club and grip the putter," he said. "Look at the way I go about my business. I don't hit the ball very far. I'm short. If I really cared what the critics thought the last 19 years, I really wouldn't be here. ... My teammates know that I'm going to give 110 percent. They know I have a lot of heart. I have a lot of grit, and that's what I'm going to do.

"But I've never felt like I have to justify myself."

All he cares about is winning the Tour Championship, with an outside shot at the FedEx Cup title and its $10 million bonus. Furyk was at 7-under 133 on a course where he won just two years ago.

Rose, who shared the 18-hole lead with Tiger Woods, made four birdies on the back nine and holed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 68.

Woods went the other direction.

The lone bright spot was a bunker shot that was among the best he has ever hit. With a quarter of the ball below the surface of the sand from a fairway bunker on the third hole, he caught a 9-iron so perfectly that it came out low and ran across the green to 6 feet for birdie.

The rest of the day was forgettable ? a muffed pitch from a bad lie on No. 8 that led to double bogey, and a series of bad swings that put him in bad positions on the back nine and led to four bogeys. He had to scramble for par on the 18th for a 73, his worst score at East Lake in 14 years, dating to a 76 in the second round in 1998.

"I didn't play very good today. Didn't hit it very good, and definitely didn't putt well," Woods said. "So it was a struggle all day."

Woods was six shots behind.

Bo Van Pelt made three bogeys on the last four holes and still had a 68 that put him two shots behind at 135, along with Masters champion Bubba Watson (66). Dustin Johnson, who had to summon his college teammate from Coastal Carolina to caddie for him when his regular had back problems, had a 67 and was another shot back, along with Georgia Tech alum Matt Kuchar (69).

The caddie was Cameron Hooper, perhaps the only caddie to ever wear topsiders and no socks. He wasn't expecting to do anything but watch. Johnson played with Garcia, who uses a CBS Sports spotter for his caddie.

Rory McIlroy, who is leading the FedEx Cup, had a 68 and was only four shots behind. He still has the best shot at the $10 million bonus, though he remains far more interested in winning his third straight tournament, and fourth in his last five starts. McIlroy was fortunate not to tumble down the leaderboard, but he scrambled for par on three of five holes at the start of his round, and made up plenty of ground with a 40-foot eagle putt on the 15th.

"I just have to try to think of my standing in this golf tournament, not really think about anything else," he said.

Furyk hasn't won since he turned his cap around in the rain, saved par from a bunker and won the Tour Championship in 2010, along with the FedEx Cup.

He lost in a four-man playoff at Innisbrook. He was tied for the lead at the U.S. Open with three holes to play ? two of them par 5s ? until he hooked his tee shot into the trees and made bogey on the 16th. And he led at Firestone from the opening round until chopping up the final hole for a double bogey to lose by one.

"I think that my personality is that I'm 75 percent mad that I haven't closed the door," he said. "I have to be reminded, whether it's my teacher or my caddie or my wife or whoever it may be, that 'You're playing well. Be patient. Let it happen.' Instead of the silver lining in the cloud, I'm definitely tougher on myself than anyone else."

Furyk was close to perfect on the front nine at East Lake.

He spent close to an hour on the practice range Thursday afternoon, mostly hitting his driver, and it paid off in the second round. East Lake can only be attacked from the fairway, and only one of Furyk's six birdie putts on the front nine was over 5 feet ? that as a 15-footer on his opening hole.

"I just didn't hit enough fairways yesterday," Furyk said. "I felt like my iron play was sharp, but I was playing from the rough too much and scrambling a couple times too many. So I wanted to get the ball in play. I did a good job of that, and I set myself up for a lot better iron shots, and my iron game was as good as it's been all year on the front nine. ... So you've got to feel good about it."

He'll feel even better if he can go to Medinah next week with his 17th career win, though that don't determine how he plays.

And if anyone is questioning Furyk being a captain's pick, he wasn't sure who it was. The eight players who qualified all weighed in with their choices. So did the assistant captains, along with U.S. captain Davis Love III. For them, taking Furyk didn't seem to be a problem.

Woods certainly didn't feel that it was.

"It's not that controversial to us as players," Woods said. "But to some it might be who are outside the team. ... He's been so solid and so rock steady. He's a great team player, and he's playing well. As I said, he's two swings away from being in the top five in points."

Those two swings ? a tee shot at Olympic, a 7-iron at Firestone ? actually would have put Furyk at No. 1 on the Ryder Cup points list. Either way, he'll be at Medinah. For now, his focus is on two more days at East Lake.

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan is courting Cuban-American voters with promises to be tougher on the Castro government than President Barack Obama.

Ryan campaigned Saturday morning in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood. He'll hold a town hall in the afternoon at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Miami's Cuban-American congressional representatives and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's son Craig touted Ryan's credentials in English and Spanish for the breakfast crowd.

Ryan said he and Romney would help get Latinos back to work. He also said America offered a better life to immigrants seeking freedom and prosperity. Cubans benefit from the so-called wet foot, dry foot policy that provides those who literally step on U.S. soil with temporary visas and a path to legal citizenship.

Man indicted for attempted bombing of Chicago bar

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An 18-year-old man his attorney described as a "misguided kid" was denied bail and indicted on Thursday for attempting to detonate what he thought was a car bomb outside a Chicago bar.

Adel Daoud was subdued in federal court, dressed in bright orange prison clothing with shackled legs, a mop of frizzy black hair and a sparse beard and mustache. He exchanged a few words with his attorney but said nothing during the hearing.

Daoud, a U.S. citizen who lives in the Chicago suburb of Hillside, was arrested on September 10 after trying to explode a fake bomb provided by an undercover FBI agent as part of an investigation lasting several months, authorities said.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted him on two counts of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and maliciously attempting to use an explosive to destroy a building. If convicted on the first count, Daoud faces up to life in prison.

Daoud's attorney Thomas Durkin argued before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys that Daoud had been entrapped by the FBI and "this kid couldn't build a bomb if his life depended on it."

But Assistant U.S. Attorney William Ridgway read through details of the charges against Daoud with evidence recorded over months, including alleged comments that Daoud said he would "only be satisfied of 100 were killed and 300 injured" in the attack. Daoud had repeatedly rejected suggestions to delay or halt plans for the attack, Ridgway said.

Ridgway described Daoud as deceptive, charismatic and knowledgeable, arguing that the defendant was dangerous and a flight risk. The judge agreed.

"The evidence shows he was predisposed to do it before the FBI" got involved, Judge Keys said of the bomb plot, adding that Daoud appeared to have "a strong desire to kill Americans, felt justified in doing so, and the more he could kill the better."

The judge ordered Daoud held without bail after the 20-minute hearing. Daoud shuffled out silently but glanced at his father, Ahmed, who was seated in the front row at court.

According to an FBI affidavit, Daoud used email accounts starting in about October 2011 to gather and send materials "relating to violent jihad and the killing of Americans."

Undercover FBI employees began corresponding with Daoud in May and later provided Daoud with a Jeep apparently full of explosives - but which was an inert device produced by undercover law enforcement, according to the affidavit. Daoud was arrested after trying to detonate it outside a downtown bar located near the Chicago Board of Trade building.

Durkin, who has experience as a defense lawyer in terrorist trials including representing detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, told reporters after the hearing that he was not surprised by the denial of bail.

"No judge in the world is going to let anybody out on a terrorism case," he said.

But he accused the FBI of coming down hard on Daoud because Islam and terrorism were involved and despite evidence that his father and two religious leaders had tried to dissuade Daoud from "ideas" like jihad.

"Anybody at 18 years old who was raised in America who would be seriously questioning those type of values I would think might have some mental issues, and I think the FBI would know that as well," Durkin told reporters.

The next hearing will be an arraignment before U.S. District Judge Sharon Coleman. No date was set.

?Our goal with the ?Year of the Negroni? program was to reignite interest in this classic, signature cocktail with food enthusiasts and the bartending community.? Because of the ubiquitous media coverage that the campaign generated through media relations and events, the excitement around the Negroni was all but inescapable.? We succeeded beyond any of our expectations,? continued Karraker.

The 2011 ?Year of the Negroni? campaign included large scale consumer events, such as the Manhattan Cocktail Classic and New York City Wine & Food Festival, as well as intimate bartender and media events that focused on rewarding existing advocates and increasing awareness and trial to those new to the Campari family.? The media results from the effort were superlative, garnering coverage in such outlets as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Bon Appetit, GQ and Bloomberg.

?Working hand in hand with the bartender community was really critical to our success,? said Hanna Lee, president and founder, Hanna Lee Communications, Inc.? ?The resurgence of classic cocktailing has been driven by this community, so gathering insights from them really set the groundwork for creative, quality-driven executions.?

The Platinum Award win brings to nine the number of PR industry awards the ?Year of the Negroni? campaign has received from top national and international PR organizations this year.? The recognition includes:
