Spoiler alert - Word enthusiasts want to ban "fiscal cliff"

(Reuters) - Whether or not the U.S. Congress acts to avoid the "fiscal cliff," the much-used phrase tops the list of words language aficionados want banned from everyday speech, according to a Michigan university's yearly roundup released on Monday.

Also making the cut for Lake Superior State University's annual list of overused, misused and generally useless terms were "kick the can down the road," "bucket list" and, it may come as no surprise, "spoiler alert."

Then there is "YOLO."

"Stands for 'You Only Live Once' and used by wannabe Twitter philosophers who think they've uncovered a deep secret of life," said Brendan Cotter, of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, in nominating the phrase for retirement.

"I only live once, so I'd prefer to be able to do it without ever seeing YOLO again," Cotter said.

The small, public university has published its annual "List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness" since New Year's Day in 1976. It is culled mostly from nominations by English-language enthusiasts through the school's website.

But don't call them "gurus" - the term is among the dozen words and phrases on this year's list they want eliminated from the news, advertising, politics and general usage.

Fiscal cliff - a short-hand reference to the mix of $600 billion in tax increases and federal government spending cuts due to begin taking effect in January - received the most nominations in 2012, the school said.

"You can't turn on the news without hearing this," said Christopher Loiselle of Midland, Michigan, in his submission. "I'm equally worried about the River of Debt and Mountain of Despair."

"If only those who utter these words would take a giant leap off of it," said Joann Eschenburg of Clinton Township, Michigan.

Others were passionate in their disgust for the excessive use of the word "passion." References by news and entertainment commentators about what topics were "trending" and incessant talk of "job creation" by presidential candidates also ranked highly for causing annoyance.

Additional terms on the list included "double down" - when used as a verb instead of "reaffirm" - plus "superfood" and "boneless wings."

"Can we just call them chicken (pieces)?" said John McNamara of Lansing.

Opening batsman Nasir Jamshed's century guided Pakistan to a six-wicket win over India in the opening match of the ODI series in Chennai.

Jamshed's 101 not out ensured India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's rescue act earlier in the day went unrewarded.

Dhoni came to the crease with his side on 29-5 after they had been sent in to bat and struck 113 not out to guide them to a final total of 227-6.

Pakistan's run chase also got off to a poor start, India debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled Mohammad Hafeez - who offered no shot - for a golden duck with the first delivery of his ODI career.

Kumar also removed Azhar Ali (9) to leave Pakistan on 21-2 but Younus Khan counter-attacked to the tune of 58 off 60 balls to ensure the required-rate was always under control.

Jamshed went to his second ODI hundred from 127 balls in the 47th over and finished off the job alongside Shoaib Malik (34no) with 11 balls to spare.

A bad day for India got worse when Virat Kohli left the field injured. Kohli slipped in his delivery stride while bowling the 41st over and appeared to twist his right knee. He was able to walk off the field but did not return.

Left-arm seamer Junaid Khan (4-43) had earlier done the damage for Pakistan with the new ball; bowling Virender Sehwag (4), Kohli (0) and Yuvraj Singh (2), and having Rohit Sharma (4) caught at third slip in his opening spell.

Suresh Raina helped his skipper repair the innings with a 79-run stand spanning 33.4 overs, Dhoni enjoyed a life on 17 when Misbah-ul-Haq put down a catch at midwicket off Hafeez's bowling.

Off-spinner Hafeez (1-26) did eventually pick up a wicket, bowling Raina for 43 with the second delivery of the 34th over - the first of the batting powerplay - before Ravichandran Ashwin (31no) helped Dhoni up the tempo.

Dhoni brought up his eighth ODI century from 118 deliveries - the second 50 of which came from 32 balls - and finished with seven fours and three sixes in his undefeated 125-ball contribution.

The three-match series continues at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on January 3.

Things To Consider When Homeschooling Your Child | Doc's

Many people decide to school they children at home because of inadequacies they see in modern public schools. But there are some downfalls to homeschooling that must also be avoided. You should read this article if you are considering homeschooling your children.

Planning your meals in advance will definitely help your schedule. Being prepared will let you to focus on teaching your child and not have to worry about what?s for dinner.

As a homeschool educator, don?t allow the educational guides and textbooks to limit the scope of your teaching. Your books and your curriculum should guide you in the right direction. Utilize them as aids to help illustrate your own well-crafted lessons to the children you teach. In the end, that is the true beauty of home-based education.

TIP! You can easily burn yourself out with chores on top of your homeschooling. Do not hesitate to recruit your partner in helping with the chores, and if you can afford it, hire help from the outside.

If you have very young toddlers as well as those in school, you have to ensure that the toddlers have activities too. Carefully select some toys, art supplies and activities to coordinate with the lessons your other children are learning. This will allow them to feel a part of the group.

Be cognizant of your budget for homeschooling. This will help you to allot resources efficiently, while reducing your expenses. You need to have separate accounts for each child. Remember to give a little wiggle room as expenses can change and errors can be made.

There are lots of new things to learn about homeschooling. You can go online and find groups for parents who school their children at home. They can offer valuable advice, tips and tricks that you can use in your own curriculum. Networking with other homeschoolers with the same goals and objectives as your own is a valuable resource.

TIP! You can be creative in the ways you allow your children to get together with others Public schools provide natural opportunities to socialize, and you must think outside the box to replicate that. Go on field trips with other homeschool groups.

Encourage independent learning. It?s appropriate to offer guidance, but the point is not for you to do the work. That responsibility should be left entirely to your child. They will know what they need to do if you outline it for them and give them timelines for completion. Independence is learned this way, as well as confidence in their abilities. They will also learn the impact of goofing off instead of focusing if free time is lost because of it.

See if you can?t team-up with other like minded parents in the area who are also homeschooling their kids. Your child can get a lot of good social interaction by being in a small group on a regular basis. You can also use this as an opportunity to leave your home.

Do a comparison list of your feelings regarding homeschooling and traditional schooling. If you felt your children were not receiving everything they needed at public school, this comparison can assist you in covering those missing items. You will have essentially created a checklist of things to concentrate on and things to avoid. Keep the list handy to allow yourself to reference it whenever necessary.

TIP! Be prepared to do research for topics you don?t know enough about. You can educate yourself by reading your child?s textbooks, researching things online, and even asking others.

The best teachers are honest with themselves about their shortcomings. A lot of people who homeschool want to skip topics they feel that they are weak with. This will affect your children?s education, so it?s not a good idea. If you?re feeling deficient in some areas in the main curriculum, try to hire a tutor or trade with another parent that homeschools.

Pick a room in the house that you want to teach your child. Allowing them complete freedom throughout the home can lead to many distractions. By having a designated classroom, you can help your child remain on task.

Homeschooled children may be getting a great education, but it takes effort to ensure they also get enough socialization. Organize play dates with families and friends who have children. Bring your children to the park so they can play with other kids. Find some sport teams, clubs and organizations for your child.

TIP! Homeschooling can offer a child a lot. There is a huge advantage to teaching at home, rather than sending your child to an often overcrowded and typically underfunded public learning facility.

You need to know all you can about homeschooling before you start out. Set a workable schedule and use teaching methods that work for your child?s learning style.

High schoolers who are homeschooled must focus on passing their GED tests. Address your child?s weak areas by having them take a mock GED and then tailoring your lessons to the subjects in which he does poorly. You will be able to work on any tough spots.

Do you have trouble teaching your children something? Try a different approach. Sometimes you need to teach them in a different manner, such as by seeing it happening, hearing it or even tasting something related. Children do not learn the same way, and when you try a different approach, learning may become easier.

TIP! An online blog is something that your child can benefit from significantly. You?re going to teach them to write anyway, and a blog is the perfect learning tool.

Sometimes home schooling is a tense situation for children and parents who are spending such a tremendous amount of time together. Focus on keeping school issues at school and home issues at home. If things happen to become particularly tense, you have the flexibility to take a break. You will both benefit from this.

Look into the homeschooling laws of your state. Different states have different guidelines regarding how you are expected to homeschool. You might have to do standardized testing, but some states won?t require it. Some states go so far as to expect parents to register as a school.

You can begin to see from this article that homeschooling is a viable option. Apply the tips you just read and prepare yourself before you start homeschooling your children. Remember that your goal is to provide your children with an excellent education.

TIP! Socialization is often a sticking point for homeschooling parents. However, the opportunity to socialize is still open to all homeschoolers.

There is plenty to learn about free lead system. Luckily for you, you have found the best wisdom in this article. Although there is more free lead system information you want to learn, this article should have answered some of your questions.

56% of female university students get drunk in record time, Spanish study suggests

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Researchers from the HealthyFit group at the University of Vigo have studied university students' lifestyles; their analysis, which includes alcohol and illegal drug consumption habits, sport and food, concludes that most students indulge in unhealthy behaviour. One of the main results of the study points to the high consumption of alcohol.

"The amount drunk per unit of time is higher among women. In other words, even though male students drink more often, females do so more intensively in shorter periods of time, which is known as binge drinking," explained Jos? M? Cancela Carral, co-author of the study published by the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Researchers randomly selected 985 students from different degree courses and in different years at the University of Vigo.

Of the females interviewed, 51.2% lead a sedentary lifestyle, while the percentage in males is 41.7%. When analysing students who maintain an appropriate level of physical activity, 38.6% of males do physical exercise, as opposed to only 20.9% of women.

"We were also surprised by the high consumption of illegal drugs among university students -- 44.9% of men and 30.9% of women -- which we understand could lead to significant future health problems, mainly related to the nervous system," underlined the researcher.

Anomalous attitudes to food were more evident among women (16.6%), although also present among men (8.8%). "However, the statistical analysis showed that this parameter depended on the degree the student was studying for," added Cancela. Such attitudes were much more common among those studying degrees related to education (19.2%) than among those studying courses related to health (6.3%).

Health network

Spanish universities set up a Healthy University Network in 2008, a project for healthy living for universities from all over Spain, the Spanish University Rectors' Association, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and some regional public health entities.

In the researcher's opinion, at many universities this network was nothing more than "a simple first step to get on the list and nothing else"; hence transversal content should be implemented in study plans related to food, physical exercise and healthy habits.

"In the light of the results, training and information courses are required in these areas, together with healthy leisure -- not just sports facilities -- to set up university guidance services for a healthy student lifestyle," concludes Cancela.

Genetic predisposition

A recent study published in the PNAS journal argues that the gene called RASGRF2 could be related to a predisposition to getting drunk.

According to scientists, this gene regulates the predisposition to drink excessive amounts of alcohol as it influences mesolimbic dopamine neuron activity, which is one of the ways dopamine is taken from one region of the brain to another.

Gunter Schumann, one of the main authors of the study, explained that even though we should not consider said gene to be the main cause -- as there are many environmental factors and other genes involved -- the study thereof helps to explain why some people are more vulnerable to alcohol than others.

Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup

veganblackbeansoup1

Last night was heavenly. Mr. Prevention and I purchased a new, rather large, LED TV for our bedroom. I snuggled into bed in my new Cubs onesie (um, no joke) at 9:30, watching Shipping Wars and flipped through a new cookbook my sister-in-law got for me ? The Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health: More Than 200 New Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for Delicious and Nutrient-Rich Dishes. I have a lot of sticky notes on pages and pages of recipes I want to try.

I am steadfast in my belief (knowledge!) that vegetarian meals are not only more wholesome in that they include more vegetables, but are also lower in cost than most meaty or fishy fare. I have no plans to omit meat or seafood from my diet?I just don?t think I could do it, but I love having go-to recipes that are chock-full of 100% good-for-me ingredients.

Enter: Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup.

veganblackbeansoup2

My mom and I were just talking about flavors and how important it is to flavor foods properly. If you don?t enjoy a recipe, consider first the flavors that you like and/or don?t like before shelving the idea all together.

We all have preferences, and in case you hadn?t noticed, I love ingredients such as cumin and cilantro for their boldness and versatility. Both of these same ingredients were used in the Black Bean & Quinoa Veggie Burgers I posted just a few days ago. The best part about finding spices and herbs that you love is that they are essentially calorie-free and contain fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that you can?t get from just any food. I can?t wait to start growing herbs in my AeroGarden. Hopefully it will work since winter has finally killed off my outdoor herbs!

veganblackbeansoup3

I?ve been wanting to make black bean soup for a really long time. I knew I wanted to use dried beans and the crock pot. From there, I consulted a few recipes and pulled from each what appealed to me most. The beauty is this soup is that you can add, or not add, whatever you wish. Similar to the Black Bean & Quinoa Veggie Burgers, I may add a chipotle in adobo sauce the next time I make this soup ? I just love those peppers and all their packed-in heat and spice!

Cuddle up with a bowl of this and a big piece of crusty Italian bread?it may just be the best decision you make all winter long!

Crock Pot Vegan Black Bean Soup adapted from Food.com and Noreen Cooks

1 lb dried black beans
1/2 red onion, diced
1 green bell peppers, diced
2 jalapenos, diced
2 tsp cumin
1 1/2 Tbsp chili powder
1/4 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 bay leaves
3 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
6 cloves garlic, minced
28 oz can no-salt added diced tomatoes
3 Tbsp red wine vinegar

Directions:

Soak the beans in 1-2 quarts of water overnight at room temperature.

Drain the beans and combine all ingredients in a large crock pot, stir well. Cover and cook on HIGH for 9-12 hours. Stir before serving hot.

Yield: ~10 cups (varies with cooking time)

Nutrition Information (per cup): 123 calories; 02. g. fat; 0 mg. cholesterol; 295 mg. sodium; 26.1 g. carbohydrate; 6.7 g. fiber; 7.2 g. protein

Result: As a lover of black bean soup I am thrilled to find a simple soup that is not only made in the crock pot, but that is also vegan and gluten-free. This soup really couldn?t be any easier to make. Be sure to leave 1-2 inches at the top of your crock as this soup does get hot and boils some. I love the long cook time that I can throw this in and not worry about throughout the day. I was skeptical about my crock on HIGH all day long, but it was perfect! Serve this with some cilantro and crusty bread. You?ll be hard pressed to find anything as delicious or healthy! Packed with fiber and protein with virtually no fat. This soup may be the perfect healthy, low-calorie winter meal!

?TGIF! It?s hard being at work when so much of the hospital is still on holiday vacation!

P.S. Be sure to ?Like? Prevention RD on Facebook for post updates there! Lots of good stuff coming with the new year?you don?t want to miss it!

Be well,

(AP) ? President Barack Obama was preparing to present a limited fiscal proposal to congressional leaders at a White House meeting Friday, a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts at the first of the year.

Lawmakers and White House officials held out a slim hope for a deal before the new year, but it remained unclear whether congressional passage of legislation palatable to both sides was even possible.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? was likely to center on which income thresholds would face higher tax rates, extending unemployment insurance, and preventing a cut in Medicare payments to doctors, among other issues.

For Obama, the eleventh-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance strength derived from his re-election against an avowed commitment to compromise in the face of divided government. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign.

A key question was whether Obama would agree to abandon his insistence during the campaign on raising taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year and instead accept a $400,000 threshold like the one he offered in negotiations with Boehner. Another was whether Republicans would seek a higher income threshold.

The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

If a deal was not possible, it would become evident at Friday's White House meeting, and Obama and the leaders would leave a resolution for the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which edged lower for a fifth day Friday amid worries that lawmakers would fail to reach a budget deal. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers on Thursday alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

The No. 2 Senate GOP leader, Jon Kyl of Arizona, said it is "pretty unlikely" that Senate Republicans would agree to legislation averting the fiscal cliff if it wouldn't pass muster in the House.

"If you know the House isn't going to do something, why go through the charade?" he told reporters. "That becomes political gamesmanship."

Obama and Reid, D-Nev., would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

An Evolutionary Whodunit: How Did Humans Develop Lactose Tolerance?

Thousands of years ago, a mutation in the human genome allowed many adults to digest lactose and drink milk.

Thousands of years ago, a mutation in the human genome allowed many adults to digest lactose and drink milk.

Got milk? Ancient European farmers who made cheese thousands of years ago certainly had it. But at that time, they lacked a genetic mutation that would have allowed them to digest raw milk's dominant sugar, lactose, after childhood.

Today, however, 35 percent of the global population ? mostly people with European ancestry ? can digest lactose in adulthood without a hitch.

So, how did we transition from milk-a-phobics to milkaholics? "The first and most correct answer is, we don't know," says Mark Thomas, an evolutionary geneticist at University College London in the U.K.

Most babies can digest milk without getting an upset stomach thanks to an enzyme called lactase. Up until several thousand years ago, that enzyme turned off once a person grew into adulthood ? meaning most adults were lactose intolerant (or "lactase nonpersistent," as scientists call it).

But now that doesn't happen for most people of Northern and Central European descent and in certain African and Middle Eastern populations. This development of lactose tolerance took only about 20,000 years ? the evolutionary equivalent of a hot minute ? but it would have required extremely strong selective pressure.

"Something happened when we started drinking milk that reduced mortality," says Loren Cordain, an exercise physiologist at Colorado State University and an expert on Paleolithic nutrition. That something, though, is a bit of a mystery.

The Clues

Milk, no surprise, is pretty nutritious. It's got protein, a bunch of micronutrients, lots of calcium and plenty of carbohydrates. For the ancient Neolithic farmer, it was like a superfood, says Thomas.

Even lactose-intolerant adults could have benefited from milk. Chemical evidence from ancient pots shows that these long-ago farmers learned to process the milk into cheese or yogurt, which removes some of the lactose.

But around 8,000 years ago in what's now Turkey ? just when humans were starting to milk newly domesticated cows, goats and sheep ? mutations near the gene that produces the lactase enzyme started becoming more frequent. And around the same time, adult lactose tolerance developed. The mutation responsible for that may be between 2,000 and 20,000 years old; estimates vary.

But in order for that new trait to have persisted over many generations, something unique must have given milk drinkers an evolutionary edge.

A Tale Of Famine And Deadly Diarrhea

Thomas thinks a combination of two reasons may explain the persistence of the lactase mutation in Northern Europe.

First, the farmers that settled there came from the Fertile Crescent, and they brought crops native to that region, like wheat and barley. But with Northern Europe's shorter growing season, these crops were more likely to fail, causing famine.

Additionally, the colder Northern European climate lent itself to natural refrigeration. "If you're a farmer in Southern Europe, and you milk a cow in the morning and you leave the milk out, it will be yogurt by noon. But if you do the same thing in Germany, it'll still be milk," says Thomas. A healthy lactose-intolerant person who drank that still-fresh milk would get a bad case of diarrhea. "But if you're malnourished, then you'll die," Thomas says.

In times of famine, milk drinking probably increased. And the very people who shouldn't have been consuming high-lactose dairy products ? the hungry and malnourished ? would be the ones more likely to drink fresh milk. So, with milk's deadly effects for the lactose intolerant, individuals with the lactase mutation would have been more likely to survive and pass on that gene.

The combination of famine and longer processing time for milk is "kind of like a double whammy," says Thomas, who has yet to publish his theory. Under his scenario, the lactose tolerant wouldn't always have had an evolutionary advantage, but for short periods of time, having that genetic mutation would have helped. "Over a long run, it's modest; but over short periods of time, it's extremely high selection" for the lactose tolerant, says Thomas.

Scientists may never discover the reason why adult lactose tolerance evolved so quickly. Other researchers have suggested that fresh milk provided a more pure fluid alternative to contaminated water sources in arid environments; that milk fat gave people a fertility advantage; or that milk drinking might have been associated with social prestige. Cordain argues that milk gave humans an advantage against malaria in Africa and Southern Europe, and rickets in Northern Europe.

"Whatever constellation of factors was involved, they're going to be different in different regions," says Thomas. "But the selection pressure might have been equally strong in East Africa and Northern Europe, for example."

It's hard to tell how prevalent lactose tolerance has been over time. But so far scientists have found evidence of adult lactase persistence in ancient skeletons in Northern Europe, Scandinavia, southern France and elsewhere. Thomas and his colleague Oddn? Sverrisd?ttir of Uppsala University in Sweden recently discovered lactase persistence in Spanish remains from about 5,000 years ago and hope to publish their research next year.

Thomas thinks that as genetic and archaeological technology continues to develop, modern science may someday reveal the culprit. But it might take a while because the research ? like our genes ? is still evolving.

Apple iPad Outselling Microsoft Surface 50-To-1 - Business Insider

An interesting analysis by "information massage therapist" A.X. Ian suggests that Apple's iPad is outselling Microsoft's new "Surface" tablet by an astounding 50-to-1 margin.

Mr. Ian analyzed tweets made on Christmas Eve that included the phrase "first tweet from [____]," with the blank being "iPad," "Kindle," "Nexus," or "Surface."

The results are presented in A.X. Ian's chart below.

While far from conclusive, these results are certainly interesting. And they don't feel inconceivable. (Do you know anyone who has chosen a Surface over an iPad?)

As John Gruber of Daring Fireball points out, the analysis skews toward Twitter users, who are likely on the geeky end of the consumer spectrum (and, therefore, more likely to buy higher end iPads than, say, lower end Kindle Fires). But this skew shouldn't hammer the Google's Nexus 7 or the Surface, both of which considered to be high-end tablets.

Meanwhile, Berkeley professor Brad Delong asks a logical follow-up question:

If the sales ratio is anywhere close to what this analysis suggests, when will Microsoft start slashing the price of the Surface to $100 to try to get rid of the current inventory? Professor Delong is looking to pick one up.

Autopsy: NY gunman shot self, not hit by police

The gunman who lured two firefighters to their deaths died of a self-inflicted shot to the head and wasn't hit by return fire from a police officer, New York State Police said Thursday.

But investigators still hadn't made a positive identification of the body found in William Spengler's burned house. They have said they believe the remains are those of his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, who also lived in the house near Rochester.

Autopsies showed that West Webster volunteer firefighter Michael Chiapperini died of a single gunshot and Tomasz Kaczowka was killed by two, police said.

Spengler set a car on fire and touched off an "inferno" in his Webster home on a strip of land along the Lake Ontario shore, took up a sniper's position and opened fire on the first firefighters to arrive at about 5:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve, authorities said. He wounded two other firefighters and an off-duty police officer who was on his way to work.

A Webster police officer who had accompanied the firefighters shot back at Spengler with a rifle in a brief exchange of gunfire before the gunman killed himself.

Trooper Mark O'Donnell said investigators weren't releasing information about how Spengler got the military-style Bushmaster .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle, 12-gauge shotgun and .38-caliber revolver found with his body. He said they're still tracing the history of the guns. Spengler spent 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother in 1980 and was barred from possessing weapons as a convicted felon.

Police have said they believe Spengler used the rifle to attack the firefighters because of the distances involved, but O'Donnell said that hadn't been confirmed by ballistics tests. The rifle, which had a combat-style flash suppressor, is similar to the one used by the gunman who massacred 20 children and six women in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school earlier this month.

The wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were upgraded Wednesday to satisfactory condition at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital.

The hospital released a statement from them saying they were "humbled and a bit overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes for us and our families."

The Spengler siblings had lived in the home with their mother, Arline Spengler, who died in October. In all, seven houses were destroyed by the flames.

Investigators found a rambling, typed letter laying out Spengler's intention to destroy his neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people."

He had been released from parole in 2006 on the manslaughter conviction and authorities said they had had no encounters with him since.

Police Chief Gerald Pickering said police may never know Spengler's motive.

Chiapperini, who also was a police lieutenant, was driving a pumper with Scardino on board when bullets blasted the windshield. He and Kaczowka died at the scene. Hofstetter was hit in the pelvis, and Scardino was shot in the shoulder and knee.

The passing off-duty officer from the neighboring town of Greece was treated for shrapnel wounds from gunfire that hit his car.

Calling hours for Chiapperini and Kaczowka will be at Webster Schroeder High School on Friday and Saturday. A funeral for Chiapperini is scheduled for Sunday at the school, with burial in West Webster Cemetery.

A funeral Mass for Kaczowka, who worked as a Monroe County emergency dispatcher, will be held Monday in Rochester at St. Stanislaus Church, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Shinzo Abe elected as Japan's prime minister

TOKYO (AP) ? The lower house of Parliament has named conservative Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay) as Japan's new prime minister.

The rise of Abe, whose nationalist positions have in the past angered Japan's neighbors, ends more than three years at the helm for the left-leaning Democratic Party of Japan and brings back the conservative, pro-big business Liberal Democratic Party that governed for most of the post-World War II era.

Abe, who was also prime minister in 2006-2007, led the LDP to victory in parliamentary elections Dec. 16. He was to name his Cabinet later Wednesday after a vote in Parliament's upper house, where his party is weaker. But the lower house has the final say.

Israel: No proof chemical weapons used in Syria

By NBC News staff and wire reports

JERUSALEM - Israel voiced doubt on Tuesday about claims that chemical weapons had been used against rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

Activists on Monday claimed civilians had suffered injuries consistent with exposure to some kind of poisonous gas.

"We have seen reports from the opposition. It is not the first time. The opposition has an interest in drawing in international military intervention," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Army Radio.

"As things stand now, we do not have any confirmation or proof that (chemical weapons) have already been used, but we are definitely following events with concern," he said.

Syria activists: Several die after Assad's forces use 'poisonous gases'

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts on Sunday of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs. The reports are difficult to verify, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Observatory, a British-based group with a network of activists across Syria, said those accounts spoke of six rebel fighters who died after inhaling smoke on the front line of Homs's urban battleground. It said it could not confirm that poison gas had been used and called for an investigation.

Syria has said it would never use chemical weapons against its citizens.

Asked about images purported to show patients being treated for possible gas poisoning, Yaalon said: "I'm not sure that what we're seeing in the photos is the result of the use of chemical weapons.

"It could be other things," he said, without elaborating.

On Sunday, senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad said Syria's chemical weapons were still secure despite the fact that Assad had lost control of parts of the country.

As Syria's southern neighbor, Israel has been concerned about chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants or Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, cautioning it could intervene to stop such developments.?

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama warned Assad that the?use of chemical weapons by his regime would be "totally unacceptable.""If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons there will be consequences and you will be held accountable," he said.
