MLS goal: Be among world soccer elite by 2022

Major League Soccer is giving itself a date and setting a goal - it wants to be considered among the world's premier soccer leagues by 2022.

MLS commissioner Don Garber believes it's obtainable, even if it's ambitious.

"I think the plan has been in place for some time, now we have given ourselves a very targeted goal and it's a bold one," Garber said in an interview with The Associated Press this week. "It's not going to be easy to achieve it but it's one we're very confident if we stay focused and things continue to align for us as they have the last couple of years."

Garber announced Wednesday an outline for what he believes it will take for MLS to be recognized among the planet's elite soccer leagues, one that calls for major capital investment in player development, including youth programs, training for coaches and infrastructure improvements at training facilities.

There also are plans for increasing franchise exposure in local markets and expanding fan bases through new technologies.

The plan will begin in earnest this season. The primary focus is on improving player development and raising the level of play for a league that's been maligned in the past for the quality of the product. The investment will be wide ranging, Garber said, from the youth level all the way to growing a partnership with the lower-division USL PRO as a developmental system for MLS.

Improving the on-field play won't be limited to players. There is a significant investment in education and training for coaches and referees.

"It's just a lot more focus on building the pyramid from the bottom, investing on those things that make our players better and improve our quality of play," Garber said. "And at the same time improve infrastructure and our training grounds and facilities and programs and our marketing so we can connect even more deeply than before with this new audience that really seem to be very passionate about major league soccer and soccer overall."

The timeline on the plans for growing MLS internationally was supposed to coincide with U.S. Soccer entering a successful bid for the 2022 World Cup. The tournament was ultimately awarded to Qatar, but Garber and MLS continued to keep that year as its target date. MLS believes it's the next step in the evolution of a product that a decade ago was on shaky footing before seeing massive growth and success for most of the past 10 years.

There was discussion about whether to temper such a rapid timeline once the World Cup bid didn't come to fruition. But moving forward with the original plan won out in the end, Garber said.

"We spent some time talking among ourselves and with our board and I think all of us really believe that there isn't a code cracker here that is going to make soccer the most popular sport in America or one that is more competitive with the other leagues. It's just a lot of hard work and a lot of good thinking and a lot of continued investment," Garber said. "And rather than wait for some seminal moment that may or may not arrive we just thought it was time for us to depend on ourselves, get very focused with a very committed and passionate ownership group to go out and try and compete with the world's best."

Dow nears record, fueled by strong housing and Fed

(AP) ? The Dow came within 60 points of its all-time high Wednesday, rising sharply for a second straight day.

The market surged following more evidence that the Fed will keep interest rates low, housing will keep recovering and shoppers aren't pulling back on spending, though they're paying more in Social Security taxes this year.

The gains were broad: Twenty-nine of 30 stocks in the Dow Jones industrial average rose. All 10 industries in the Standard and Poor's 500 index climbed.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 175.24 points, or 1.2 percent, to 14,075.37. The index is now 89 points from its record close of 14,164.53 reached in October 2007. It rose steadily from the opening bell, then peaked near the record at 3:26 p.m. Eastern Time, before easing slightly in the last half hour of trade.

The Dow has surged 290 points in the past two days, erasing its drop of 216 points Monday when inconclusive results from an election in Italy renewed worries that Europe's fiscal crisis could flare up again.

"The market psychology has clearly shifted. It's no longer sell the rally, it's buy the dips," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer of Palisade Capital Management. "The economic data continues to be strong."

The Standard and Poor's 500 index gained 19.05 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,515.99. That put it within 49 points of its record close of 1,565, also in October of 2007.

The Nasdaq composite rose 32.61 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,162.26.

Investors were also encouraged Wednesday that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stood behind the central bank's low-interest-rate policies as he faced the House Financial Services Committee.

His comments dissipated worries about the bank's resolve to keep up the program. Those worries sprang up last week when minutes from the bank's last policy meeting revealed disagreement among Fed officials.

Also, the number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose in January from December to the highest level in almost three years. The report continued a string of positive housing news. Sales of new homes jumped 16 percent last month to the highest level since July 2008, the government reported Tuesday.

Home builder stocks rose for the second day in a row. PulteGroup climbed 25 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $19.30, after rising 5.7 percent the day before.

"Some encouraging news for the bulls has been the housing data that has come out over the past couple of days," said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

The analyst said he remained "extremely bullish," on stocks in the medium and long-term, but cautioned that a pullback may lie ahead in coming days after the year's strong gains.

Stocks have surged since the start of the year. The Dow is up 7.4 percent and the S&P 500 has climbed 6.3 percent.

But rising even more is the Dow Jones transportation average, which is up 13 percent for the year at 5,989.37. Airlines like Delta and Alaska Air are powering the gains.

"If the economy is doing well you've got to be moving stuff around," said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategists at Federated Investors. "You've got to be moving people on airplanes, you've got to be moving cargo with trains or trucks, or UPS."

Discount retailers rose Wednesday. Dollar Tree jumped $4.31, or 11 percent, to $45.39 after reporting a 22 percent profit increase. Dollar General rose $1.61, or 3.6 percent, to $46.56. Family Dollar Stores rose $1.39, or 2.5 percent, to $57.68.

Earnings for S&P 500 companies will climb 7.8 percent in the fourth quarter, the third straight quarter of growth, according to data from S&P Capital IQ.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose two basis points to 1.90 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves;

? Retailer J.C. Penney fell $3.07, or 15 percent, to $18.09 after the market closed. That drop followed a quarterly loss that was much larger than expected.

? Priceline.com rose $17.42, or 2.6 percent, to $695.91 after reporting that its net income jumped in the fourth quarter as bookings grew.

? First Solar plunged $4.32, or 13.8 percent, to $27.04 after the company posted disappointing sales for the fourth quarter and gave a weak early outlook for the year.

? Target fell 93 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $63.12 after the No. 2 discount chain's quarterly income fell 2 percent as it dealt with intense competition during the holiday shopping season.

? DreamWorks Animation fell 30 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $16.31 after posting a loss of $82.7 million. The company booked a write-off on its November release "Rise of the Guardians" and on an upcoming movie that needs to be reworked.

Four new species of water-gliding rove beetles discovered in Ningxia, China

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Four new species from the Steninae subfamily of the large family of rove beetles (Staphylinidae) have been discovered in the Ningxia Autonomous Region, China, as part of an exploration of the insect fauna of the Liupan Shan Natural Reserve, where a large number of specimens has been collected. The expedition also yielded 11 new records for the Ningxia province of previously described Steninae species. The study was published in the open access, peer reviewed journal Zookeys.

The Ningxia Autonomous Region is mainly known as a dry, desert-like land. The region of the Liupan Shan Natural Reserve, however, is part of the Liupan Shan mountains, also known as the green pearl on the Loess Plateau. The area is also regarded as a "Kingdom of Animals" for its great biological diversity.

The rove beetle family, Staphylinidae, is one of the most widely distributed beetle families in the world. However, the representatives of the Steninae subfamily are of particular interest. These fascinating beetles are known for their unique ability to glide on the surface of water. This special skill is made possible through evolutionary adjustment allowing the production of special gland secretions that reduce surface tension.

Out of the four newly described species two are from the genus Dianous, and as all representatives are experts in water gliding. The other two belong to the genus Stenus where this ability is only partly present. One of the species, Stenus liupanshanus lives in leaf litter and is therefore believed to not demonstrate the ability. However the other one, Stenus biwenxuani, was found on shore and is therefore considered to be a water glider.

Steninae are also specialist predators of small invertebrates such as collembola, which are frequently found in leaf litter. What is fascinating is the special hunting technique used by those beetles to catch their prey. Species in the genus Stenus can eject some of its mouth parts using blood pressure. The thin rod of the labium ends in a pair of pads with bristly hairs and hooks, called paraglossa, and between these hairs are small pores that exude an adhesive glue-like substance, which sticks to prey to secure a perfect catch and no escape.

Dr. Liang Tang from the Department of Biology, Shanghai Normal University, comments: "As far as the Steninae are concerned, Ningxia Autonomous Region is one of the most poorly explored regions, with merely two species being recorded until 2008. In the summer of 2008, a team surveyed the insect fauna of the Liupan Shan in southern Ningxia and collected a large number of Steninae. In this paper, we report the results of the study, which includes two new Stenus and two new Dianous species, and new province records for eleven Stenus species."

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 preview: an 8-inch S Pen tablet that's also a phone

Samsung Galaxy Note 80 preview an 8inch S Pen tablet that's also a phone

An updated, larger Galaxy Note from Samsung was inevitable. Given the undeniable popularity of mid-size tablets (see: Apple iPad mini), it's no surprise the Korean electronics giant would want to strengthen its foothold in a category it helped create. It was just three short years ago that Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab and now, three Notes later, it's ready to perfect the one-handed experience. With this new Note, the company's culled the best of what's around its Galaxy into an 8-inch form factor, housing a 1,280 x 800 TFT display, Exynos 4 Quad with 2GB RAM (clocked at 1.6GHz), TouchWiz-skinned Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS, S Pen (and suite of associated apps), as well as radios for HSPA+ and WiFi into that familiar, lightweight plastic body.

But that extra inch alone isn't the Galaxy Note 8.0's main attraction. Samsung's wisely made use of the additional screen real estate to bundle two extra features. Building upon market research that indicates over 80-percent of tablet use takes place within the living room, the company's partnered with Peel for its Smart Remote app, a visual programming guide with remote control functions baked-in that comes pre-loaded on the tab. And, in keeping with its portrait oriented design, the Note 8.0 also incorporates what the company calls "reading mode," effectively optimizing the slate's display for comfortable e-book use.

'Argo,' Lawrence win on slow Oscar night

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Ben Affleck's revenge? Maybe. Despite the "Argo" director's much-talked-about snub on the best director nomination list, his film took home the best picture Oscar Sunday night, the final award of an evening that seemed even more ploddingly paced than usual.

AP

The Ben Affleck-directed film "Argo," Jennifer Lawrence and Daniel Day-Lewis were major winners at Sunday night's Oscars.

Affleck seemed genuinely thrilled and touched as he speed-shouted out his thanks, including expressing gratitude to Canada, a near-necessity after that country's ambassador said he felt his nation's contributions to the 1980 rescue depicted in the film were underplayed.

"I was here 15 years ago and I had no idea what I was doing," Affleck said, referring to his 1997 original screenplay Oscar win for "Good Will Hunting." "I never thought I'd be back here."

In a surprise twist, the win for "Argo" was read not by presenter Jack Nicholson, but by first lady Michelle Obama, via a live satellite presentation from the White House.

Obama praised the importance of the arts in the lives of young people, saying "every day, through engagement in the arts, our children learn to open their imaginations, to dream just a little bigger and to strive every day to reach those dreams."

/

"Argo" beat out eight other best-picture contenders, including Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which was expected by many to dominate the night. But helped in part by publicity from the Affleck snub, "Argo" came on strong and by Oscar night, was considered by many to be a best-picture favorite.

"Lincoln" didn't follow through on its early best picture hopes, but for months, star Daniel Day-Lewis had been the overwhelming favorite. He didn't disappoint -- he took home his third best actor Oscar, making him the first actor to claim three wins in that category. He was quick to joke with presenter Meryl Streep, saying, "before we agreed to a straight swap, I had been commissioned to play Margaret Thatcher." Streep won an Oscar for playing Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" in 2011.

Jennifer Lawrence surprised many by claiming the best actress honor for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook," then surprised them again by tripping as she walked up to accept the award. She put her hands down on the stairs leading to the stage, steadied herself, and continued on to the microphone, making a quick joke about how the applause was sympathy for her fall.

Christoph Waltz won the night's first statuette, for "Django Unchained," 15 minutes into the show, kicking off a long slog of musical numbers and minor awards until Anne Hathaway's ?best supporting actress award an hour and a half later.

In his speech, Waltz gave special thanks to Quentin Tarantino, the film's director, saying "you climbed the mountain ... because you were not afraid."

Hathaway won as expected for her role as the desperate prostitute Fantine in the big-screen version of "Les Miserables," a part her own mother once played on a national tour.

"It came true," Hathaway said while holding her trophy. She closed her speech with the hope that in the future, "the misfortunes of Fantine will be found only in stories and never again in real life."

Anne Hathaway accepts the award for best supporting actress for her role in "Les Miserables.

The best director category became controversial back when the nominees were announced, with Affleck and "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow left off the list. Many awards-watchers felt Steven Spielberg would claim the honor for "Lincoln," but it was Taiwanese director Ang Lee who won the Oscar for his work on "Life of Pi."

"Family Guy" host Seth MacFarlane began the show with a lengthy song, dance and humor segment that included an appearance by William Shatner, appearing as "Star Trek's" Captain Kirk, and chastising MacFarlane for a supposed poor performance that Kirk came back from the future to correct.

MacFarlane's humor is often risque, and a few lines from his opening segment and throughout the show earned gasps from the audience. He joked that "Django Unchained's" near-constant use of the n-word was because the film was "loosely based on Mel Gibson's voicemails."

Later in the show, MacFarlane complimented Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in "Lincoln," and said that "the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth." The reference to Lincoln's assassin didn't go over well, leaving MacFarlane to crack, "Really? 150 years and it's still too soon?"

The show's theme was?music in film, which was spotlighted in numerous segments.

The always-popular "In Memoriam" montage showing photos of those in the industry who died in the past year ended with an image of Marvin Hamlisch. As his image scrolled away, Barbra Streisand strolled on stage to sing Hamlisch's "The Way We Were," which won the best original song Oscar in 1973.

A montage of dramatic scenes from James Bond films was shown to celebrate that film franchise's 50th anniversary, with Bond girl Halle Berry introducing the footage. Singer Shirley Bassey, who sang three of the Bond theme songs, sang "Goldfinger" as part of the tribute.

It was a timely nod, because later in the show, singer Adele and co-writer Paul Epworth won the Oscar for best original song for "Skyfall," the theme to the latest Bond film.

A tribute to movie musicals featured Catherine Zeta-Jones singing "All That Jazz" from "Chicago," and Jennifer Hudson bringing down the house with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls." Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Russell Crowe and other cast members from "Les Miserables" capped off the performances with a medley from their musical.

Both screenplay awards went to best picture nominees. Quentin Tarantino won the original screenplay award for "Django Unchained," the slavery drama that had already won Waltz his supporting-actor honor. Praising the strong work of current screenwriters, including his competition, Tarantino announced, "This will be the writer's year!"

"Argo," adapted from an article in Wired magazine,?won the award for best adapted screenplay, with writer Chris Terrio dedicating the honor to CIA employee Tony Mendez, who was instrumental in the 1980 rescue of American embassy employees from Iran that forms the center of the film.

The best sound editing award ended in an Oscar rarity ? a tie. Presenter Mark Wahlberg announced the Academy had come to a split decision, and gave the award to both "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall."

"Life of Pi" won the most Oscars of the night. In addition to Lee's best director honor, the film claimed awards for cinematography, original score and visual effects. The winners of the visual effects award were cut off by the ominous theme from "Jaws" as their speech ran over ? a musical choice that was revisited later when?"Searching for Sugar Man," a documentary about little-known American singer Rodriguez and his unexpected popularity in South Africa, won the Oscar for best documentary feature and the film's director began to ramble.

"Brave," the story of a Scottish princess who battled to establish an adult relationship with her mother the queen, won the Oscar for best animated feature. "Paperman" won the award for best animated short.

"Anna Karenina" won for best costume direction, and "Les Miserables" for makeup and hair.

"Curfew" won the award for live-action short film, and "Inocente" for documentary short subject.

"Les Miserables" won the Oscar for best sound mixing.

"Lincoln" won for production design.

Austria's "Amour," which was also nominated for best picture, won the award for best foreign-language film. The film, set in France, stars French actress Emmanuelle Riva, who turned 86 on Oscar night and was a best actress nominee.

Qualcomm bolsters AllJoyn functionality, demos LTE carrier aggregation with 150Mbps peak transfers

Qualcomm bolsters AllJoyn functionality, demos LTE carrier aggregation with 150Mbps peak transfers

Peak transfers of 150Mbps, you say? We're listening. Here at Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm's newest Gobi chipsets (the MDM9225 and MDM9625) are the first to support LTE carrier aggregation and LTE Category 4 with peak data rates of up to 150Mbps. The reveal marks the introduction of the outfit's third-generation 4G LTE embedded chip, and if all goes well, we should see the hardware slipping into phones, tablets and potentially laptops in the second half of 2013. To make it all seem more realistic, it partnered with Sierra Wireless and Ericsson here in Barcelona in order to prove the figures. For those unaware, LTE carrier aggregation combines radio channels within and across bands to increase user data rates and reduce latency -- in other words, it allows LTE to be even faster.

In related news, Qually also announced that it'll be extending the AllJoyn software development project with "new core interoperable services." As of now, we're simply told that the new services will be available on devices with different operating systems and from different vendors, theoretically enabling an "Internet of Everything" by the time they're upstreamed into the AllJoyn open source project by May 2013. We'll be swinging by the company's booth to see what exactly there is to visualize -- for now, feel free to pursue the press releases linked below.

Authorities: Report of gunman at MIT was a hoax

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? A false report of a gunman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that briefly caused a campus-wide lockdown Saturday stemmed from an electronic message sent to police, authorities said.

Officers searched for a man reported to be carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor but found nothing unusual, Cambridge police said. The report ? that alleged that the gunman was barricaded inside a building on campus ? turned out to be a hoax, and there was no threat to public safety, state police spokesman David Procopio said.

Cambridge police received the tip in an electronic chat message around 7:30 a.m., but witnesses on the scene eventually contradicted it, spokesman Dan Riviello said. Neither police nor MIT specified how the tip was received, though the police department's website says anonymous crime tips may be made via text message or email, in addition to a telephone hotline.

"The MIT community was sent a precautionary text message at 8:52 a.m. asking them to remain indoors and shelter in place," the university said in a statement issued following online criticism over delays in alerting the public that a gunman was possibly on campus.

A room-to-room search by MIT and Cambridge police, along with state police troopers, led officers to declare that the scene was clear at about 10:30 a.m., MIT said.

"No armed suspects were found in the building or on campus and police believe that the event, as reported, did not occur," according to a statement by Cambridge police.

Investigators are trying to identify the prankster and will pursue criminal charges if they do, Riviello said.

He declined to provide additional details or confirm reports that the IP address used by the prankster has been traced to New York, saying the investigation continued.

"At the conclusion of the ongoing investigation, MIT Police and other parts of the MIT administration will, as part of standard operating procedure, conduct an after-action review of MIT's police and communications actions during this event," the university said in its statement.

About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school outside Boston where students are famous for their smarts as well as their stunts, including once putting a police car on top of a domed campus building.

Rusty rocks reveal ancient origin of photosynthesis

SUN-WORSHIP began even earlier than we thought. The world's oldest sedimentary rocks suggest an early form of photosynthesis may have evolved almost 3.8 billion years ago, not long after life appeared on Earth.

A hallmark of photosynthesis in plants is that the process splits water and produces oxygen gas. But some groups of bacteria oxidise substances like iron instead ? a form of photosynthesis that doesn't generate oxygen. Evolutionary biologists think these non-oxygen-generating forms of photosynthesis evolved first, giving rise to oxygen-generating photosynthesis sometime before the Earth's atmosphere gained oxygen 2.4 billion years ago (New Scientist, 8 December 2012, p 12).

But when did non-oxygen-generating photosynthesis evolve? Fossilised microbial mats that formed in shallow water 3.4 billion years ago in what is now South Africa show the chemical fingerprints of the process. However, geologists have long wondered whether even earlier evidence exists.

The world's oldest sedimentary rocks ? a class of rock that can preserve evidence of life ? are a logical place to look, says Andrew Czaja of the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. These rocks, which are found in Greenland and date back almost 3.8 billion years, contain vast deposits of iron oxide that are a puzzle. "What could have formed these giant masses of oxidised iron?" asks Czaja.

To investigate, he analysed the isotopic composition of samples taken from the oxidised iron. He found that some isotopes of iron were more common than they would be if oxygen gas was indiscriminately oxidising the metal. Moreover, the exact isotopic balance varied subtly from point to point in the rock.

Both findings make sense if photosynthetic bacteria were responsible for the iron oxide, says Czaja. That's because these microbes preferentially oxidise only a small fraction of the dissolved iron, and the iron isotopes they prefer vary slightly as environmental conditions change (Earth and Planetary Science Letters, doi.org/kh5). His findings suggest that this form of photosynthesis appeared about 370 million years earlier than we thought.

It is "the best current working hypothesis for the origin of these deposits", says Mike Tice of Texas A&M University in College Station ? one of the team who analysed the 3.4-billion-year-old microbial mats from South Africa.

William Martin at the University of D?sseldorf, Germany, agrees. "Anoxygenic photosynthesis is a good candidate for the isotope evidence they see," he says. "Had these fascinating results been collected on Mars, the verdict of the jury would surely remain open," says Martin Brasier at the University of Oxford. "But [on Earth] opinion seems to be swinging in the direction of non-oxygen-generating photosynthesis during the interval from 3.8 to 2.9 billion years ago."

Exclusive: Corporate victims of Chinese hackers speak out

    By Anna Schecter
    Rock Center

This article was originally published on Oct. 11 and was updated on Feb. 22, as more information became available.

UPDATE:?In a new report released this week, cyber-security firm, Mandiant, pinpointed exactly where some of the most sophisticated hackers in China are working ? in or around a building that serves as a Chinese military unit's headquarters on the outskirts of Shanghai.

This elite group of hackers has been dubbed the "Shanghai Group." They've struck 141 times since 2006 across all sectors of the U.S. economy.? This is the first time such a group has been tracked right to the doorstep of the People's Liberation Army.

Two major United States newspapers, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, reported earlier this year that their computer systems have been repeatedly targeted by hackers based in China for the past several months.

The New York Times said the attacks, which began in mid-September, were in response to a Times investigation of the relatives and family of China?s Premier Wen Jiabao. The Wall Street Journal simply stated that the infiltration was "for the apparent purpose of monitoring the newspaper's China coverage."

This is not the first time cyber-attacks originating from China have been in the national spotlight. According to current and former intelligence officials at the highest levels of government, the Chinese have playing dirty in the international spy game for years.

?This is stealing American wealth.? It's stealing American jobs.? It's stealing American competitive advantage,? General Michael Hayden, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, said in an interview with NBC News.

Hayden?s comment was echoed by a?House Intelligence Committee report?released on October 8, 2012 warning that two Chinese telecommunications companies, Huawei and ZTE, could be funneling sensitive information back to Beijing, and cautioned American carriers to avoid doing business with them.

Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., told NBC News that the Chinese have targeted every sector of the American economy.

?Everything you can possibly imagine we have seen the Chinese make a concerted effort to steal that information and use it for their own economic advantage,? he said.

That includes blueprints for the next generation of auto parts, formulas for pesticides and pharmaceuticals, and other information that makes American companies competitive in the global marketplace.

Though the United States limits its espionage to national security interests, intelligence officials said, China has launched a well-organized campaign to steal American corporate secrets via the Internet.

?I know states steal secrets.?Our states steal secrets.?And we're actually pretty good at it.? But we self-limit.? We steal things that are valuable and useful for your security, for your liberty and for your safety,? Hayden said.

One of the first to find himself on the front lines of the economic cyber war with China at the corporate level was Brian Shields. He was a computer security specialist for Nortel, a giant Canadian telecommunications company.

A success story from the early Internet age, Nortel made cell phone and computer network equipment. At its height, the company employed 20,000 people in the U.S.

Shields said he first got wind of the Chinese in Nortel?s network in 2004.? An employee working in highly technical research and development saw some curious activity on a computer server.? His documents were being downloaded apparently by a senior executive named Brian McFadden, who worked in a completely different department.

Shields said McFadden had not downloaded anything.? Instead, someone had hacked into the computer network using McFadden?s stolen password. Shields said he discovered that seven passwords had been stolen, including that of then CEO Frank Dunn.

Though Shields could never determine who the individual hacker was, he was able to track the activity to servers in Shanghai and Hangzhou, China.

In total more than 1,400 documents were stolen including product designs and valuable customer information, according to Shields.

?They could know what companies we're buying, how much. They could know where we saw our future product. They could know where we saw our profitability,? he said.

After the attack, Shields said he watched his company steadily lose business, while a competitor, Huawei, began to grow.? Nortel went bankrupt in 2009, while Huawei has become one of the world?s premiere telecommunications companies. Shields said he believes Nortel went under as a result of spying by companies like Huawei.?

Most industry insiders say that Nortel was a victim of bad business decisions coupled with the burst of the Internet bubble.

A spokeswoman for Nortel said the company responded appropriately to the 2004 attacks and ?found no evidence of wide spread security issues.?

Huawei has denied stealing from Nortel or any other company. In a statement emailed to NBC News, the spokeswoman said the company has "the highest respect for the intellectual property of others."

In response to October 8th's House Intelligence Committee report, a Huawei spokesman said the accusations were based on rumors. The company defended its record as a member of the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the world.

?For the past 25 years, we have held an upstanding record? We have been emphasizing that Huawei is committed to cooperating transparently with any and all government agencies who wish to carry out an open and impartial dialogue about our company and the products and services that have made us successful internationally,? read a Huawei statement responding to the report.

Huawei has already sold equipment to a dozen small carriers in the U.S.

The Huawei spokesman said company is a ?partner to the U.S. high-tech industry? and ?helps create jobs in the U.S.?

ZTE?released a statement?saying that the company is China?s ?most transparent, independent, globally focused, publicly traded telecom company.?

Click here to read a full response from Huawei

In response to this story, China?s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei denied stealing from any corporations, adding that last year the Chinese helped international agencies address hundreds of cyber-attacks.?? He said the Mandiant report linking attacks to the Chinese military was ?unfounded? and ?unprofessional.?

?China is also a victim of cyber-attacks, and we take a firm stance on continuously playing an active role in international cooperation,? Hong Lei told NBC News.

But top American brass said they are exasperated by China?s efforts to portray themselves as victims. Hayden said it is time to hold China accountable.

?Don't treat me like a child.? We know what you're doing.? We have good evidence with regard to what you're doing.? And if you continue to do what you do actions will have consequences,? said Hayden.

Rogers advocated that the White House make Chinese cyber espionage the number one issue in bilateral relations with China.

?They do respond to embarrassment.? And we ought to embarrass them for being thieves of the research and development of the United States of America.?

Watchup Adds Automated, Personalized News Playlists To Its Tablet Video App

watchup screenshotWatchup, a startup hoping to reinvent the news-watching experience on the iPad, has released an update that should make it even more convenient for users. When I spoke to co-founder Adriano Farano back in December, he talked about how people used to gather around the TV for the nightly newscast ? something that's been lost in the current fragmented environment. Watchup tries to recapture some of the experience, while also allowing people to assemble a newscast of their own, pulling clips from sources like the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, and the PBS NewsHour. And the latest features offer an interesting mix between the old and the new.

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship Talk ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship TalkA new study explores close relationships between straight women and gay men and finds that the glue that cements these unique relationships is honest, unbiased relationship advice.

The study by University of Texas at Austin researchers, published online in the February issue of Evolutionary Psychology, is the first to provide empirical evidence that the emotional closeness shared by straight women and gay men is rooted in the absence of deceptive mating motivations.

?Friendships between straight women and gay men are free of hidden mating agendas,? said Eric Russell, lead author of the study. ?They may be able to develop a deeper level of honesty because their relationship isn?t complicated by sexual attraction or mating competition.?

As part of the study, Russell and colleagues presented 88 heterosexual women, and 58 homosexual men with the Facebook profile of a person named Jordan.

The profiles were identical, except for Jordan?s gender and sexual orientation. During the time of the study, the respondents believed the researchers were examining how online profiles influence friendships.

Participants were told to imagine they were at a party with Jordan, and he/she gave them romance-related advice. They then assessed the degree to which they would trust this advice.

According to the results, straight women perceived advice offered by a gay man to be more trustworthy than advice offered by a heterosexual man or woman. Similarly, the gay male participants perceived a straight woman?s love advice to be more trustworthy than the same advice offered by a homosexual man or woman.

Investigators theorize that women may have conflicts of interests with other women and straight men.

For example, other women may be seen as potential competitors, and straight men may discourage relationships with other men and steer women toward themselves.

Gay men, however, don?t have these conflicts with straight women, so they may be uniquely positioned to provide mating-relevant advice and support that is not tainted with ulterior motives from sexual rivalry or sexual attraction.

Study: Asian carp DNA may not signal live fish

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) ? Live Asian carp don't necessarily have to be present for their DNA to turn up in the environment, according to a government study released Wednesday that could intensify the debate over how to prevent the aggressive, hungry invaders from reaching the Great Lakes and other vulnerable waters.

DNA is found in excrement, slime and scales from live fish. But the report by three federal agencies identifies six other possible means through which genetic fingerprints from bighead and silver carp could find their way into locations such as the Chicago waterway system and western Lake Erie, where it has been detected in dozens of samples taken in recent years.

Those potential pathways include storm sewers, fisheries sampling gear, fish-eating birds, dead fish carcasses, barges and sediments, the report said. It said carp DNA attached to any of those sources could remain for days before disintegrating.

Scientists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Geological Survey are conducting a three-year study designed to answer questions raised by the repeated discovery of Asian carp DNA in rivers and canals in the Chicago area ? including locations beyond an electric barrier intended to block the carp's northward march toward Lake Michigan. Their DNA also has been found in the Mississippi River beyond Minneapolis.

"The purpose ... is to improve the understanding and interpretation of Asian carp environmental DNA results, so we can refine and make this relatively young monitoring tool the most effective to detect live Asian carp presence," said Kelly Baerwaldt, an Army Corps fisheries biologist and Asian carp program manager. Additional reports are planned as the study continues.

Bighead and silver carp escaped into the Mississippi River from sewage treatment ponds and fish farms in the Deep South decades ago and have migrated northward, invading numerous tributary rivers. The filter feeders gobble massive volumes of plankton ? microscopic plants and animals crucial to aquatic food webs.

Scientists say if allowed to infest the Great Lakes, the carp eventually could crowd out native species, endangering the region's $7 billion fishing industry. Silver carp, which spring from the water when startled and have collided jarringly with boaters, pose a threat to tourism.

Some state and local officials in the Great Lakes region want structures placed in the Chicago waterways to seal off Lake Michigan from the Mississippi watershed. Business and government leaders in Chicago say that would devastate shipping in the area, and some question whether the DNA findings are sufficient evidence that the carp have evaded the electric barrier.

Just one live carp has been found beyond the barrier, which is in a canal 37 miles southwest of the city, despite intensive netting operations after repeated positive DNA findings.

Asian carp DNA discoveries also have ignited a debate over whether to close a Mississippi River shipping lock in Minnesota's Twin Cities area.

In their report, the federal scientists said they have conducted experiments to determine the feasibility of alternative explanations for the sampling results. Skeptics have suggested the previously detected DNA could have come from excrement of birds that feed on dead carp, or perhaps from ice and wastewater flushed into Chicago sewers from markets that sell the carp, or from boats that touched the fish.

Without taking sides in the debate, the scientists found that fish-eating birds "have the capacity" to transmit carp DNA in their droppings, which could contaminate barges and other vessels. They found the telltale DNA in feces of birds that were fed Asian carp.

The study also found "considerable amounts" of DNA stuck to boat hulls, which can remain for days "and does not appear to be completely or quickly washed off of boats moving through the water."

Team members reported finding Asian carp DNA in Chicago's storm sewers. They said boats, nets and other gear used by commercial fishermen and natural resource agencies could spread the genetic markers.

Chris Jerde of the University of Notre Dame, who's among the scientists who have detected Asian carp DNA in recent years, said they never claimed that all the positive hits came from live fish. But alternatives suggested in the report don't explain the persistent DNA findings in the same general locations, he said.

Jerde said he and colleagues have tested more than 1,700 water samples from the Chicago waterways, Lakes Michigan and Erie, and many rivers in the region. The positive results have been concentrated in areas relatively close to where a live carp was landed in Chicago in 2010 and where a bighead was caught in Lake Erie around 2000, he said.

"These patterns ... would seem to indicate that there's at least some live carp present in the system, although we don't know how many," Jerde said.

Jon Huntsman: Marriage Equality Is A Conservative Cause

    Jon Huntsman

Former Utah Governor, and 2012 Republican Presidential candidate, Jon Huntsman has a piece up at The American Conservative in which he endorses same-sex marriage:

It?s difficult to get people even to consider your reform ideas if they think, with good reason, you don?t like or respect them. Building a winning coalition to tackle the looming fiscal and trust deficits will be impossible if we continue to alienate broad segments of the population. We must be happy warriors who refuse to tolerate those who want Hispanic votes but not Hispanic neighbors. We should applaud states that lead on reforming drug policy. And, consistent with the Republican Party?s origins, we must demand equality under the law for all Americans.

While serving as governor of Utah, I pushed for civil unions and expanded reciprocal benefits for gay citizens. I did so not because of political pressure?indeed, at the time 70 percent of Utahns were opposed?but because as governor my role was to work for everybody, even those who didn?t have access to a powerful lobby. Civil unions, I believed, were a practical step that would bring all citizens more fully into the fabric of a state they already were?and always had been?a part of.

That was four years ago. Today we have an opportunity to do more: conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry. I?ve been married for 29 years. My marriage has been the greatest joy of my life. There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge that same relationship with the person they love.

All Americans should be treated equally by the law, whether they marry in a church, another religious institution, or a town hall. This does not mean that any religious group would be forced by the state to recognize relationships that run counter to their conscience. Civil equality is compatible with, and indeed promotes, freedom of conscience.

Marriage is not an issue that people rationalize through the abstract lens of the law; rather it is something understood emotionally through one?s own experience with family, neighbors, and friends. The party of Lincoln should stand with our best tradition of equality and support full civil marriage for all Americans.

Huntsman is absolutely right, of course. The arguments in favor of same-sex marriage have been stated here before and don?t really need to be restated again. The arguments against, which generally just boil down appeals to tradition and religion that become less persuasive as time goes on. There?s nothing necessarily remarkable about Huntsman joining the growing ranks of conservatives coming out in favor of marriage equality, of course, but I would suggest that it?s at least somewhat significant that the former Governor of what is arguably one of the most socially conservative states in the nation doing so is at least somewhat significant.

More importantly, though, I?d argue that Huntsman?s argument that support for marriage equality is a conservative?cause is significant for reasons that don?t necessarily have anything to do with politics. As a cultural matter, there are mountains of social science studies that show that relationships involving committed couples, regardless of the gender pairings involved, are far more stable that ?casual? relationships. Additionally, it?s fairly clear that established families are far better for children than single parent families, and the evolving practice of homosexuals either bearing children via artificial insemination or adoption has shown that such relationships are just as beneficial for children as heterosexual relationships. What all of this suggests is that allowing gays and lesbians to enter into a legal marriage tends to lead to exactly the kind of social?stability?that conservatives claim that they support.

Sadly, I?m fairly sure that most conservatives will reject Huntsman?s argument out of hand.

Yanks' Granderson, Gardner may switch?OF spots

    By MARK DIDTLER

    Associated Press

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 3:22 p.m. ET Feb. 21, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Yankees outfielders Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner could be switching positions.

Granderson worked out in left field Thursday and the speedy Gardner switched to center.

"I think it has a chance to help us a little bit, but I'm not really sure," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's why I've said from the beginning that I'm going to toy with it. I'm not saying today that this is what it's going to be opening day."

Girardi plans to play the pair together in upcoming spring training games.

"See if we like it," Girardi said. "If we do, we'll stay with it. If we don't, we won't."

Granderson also will get some playing time in center.

"I'd loved to play center. That's what I've been playing. At the same time, I want to play in general," Granderson said. "No matter where that happens to be, that's where I want to be at. You never know unless you try things out. We don't know what the best way is going to be."

Gardner still thinks of himself as center fielder, a spot where he has previous experience.

"For the last few years I've been playing left, and that's fine with me," he said. "If we went out there and played right now, I'd go to center, I'd go to left, it doesn't really matter to me."

Ichiro Suzuki homered off countryman Hiroki Kuroda during batting practice and tipped his helmet toward the fans after an ovation.

Derek Jeter, coming back from ankle surgery, continued taking part in defensive drills and faced right-hander Jim Miller in BP. He took six pitches, hit a liner to right and fouled a ball in the batting cage.

Jeter is jogging on and off the field but hasn't started a full outdoor running program.

Second baseman Robinson Cano and first baseman Mark Teixeira are among the position players scheduled to play in Saturday's game against Atlanta at Kissimmee. David Phelps will the starting pitcher.

Notes: Cano will find himself in an unfamiliar spot March 6 when he plays against the Yankees for the first time as a member of the Dominican Republic national team. "It's going to be weird. I think that it's going to be fun," he said. "You get to see a different view of the game." ... Girardi said RHP Phil Hughes (injured upper back) felt better, which was a "good sign for me." The Yankees are hopeful that the right-hander will be able to resume throwing in about a week.

Coach's big shot wins student tuition

Call it the shot heard ?round the world.

Or the sports world, at least.

Last Friday, Brandon University Bobcats men?s basketball coach Gil Cheung ? former girls hoops coach at Southridge School ? sunk a miraculous shot from half court during the school?s Shooutout for Tuition contest, giving BU student Mason Kaluzniak free tuition for a semester at the Manitoba school.

Kaluzniak was chosen at random for the contest, with the stipulation being that he could take the shot himself, or let someone else shoot for him. He chose Cheung, a former Bobcats captain, who led Brandon to two national championships in his playing days, before turning to coaching.

The moment was captured on video ? the 43-second YouTube clip had more than 1.8 million views by Peace Arch News? deadline Wednesday afternoon.

In the clip, Cheung, wearing dress pants and a shirt and tie ? he removed his jacket before walking to centre-court ? steps to the centre line, dribbles the ball three times, then fires the shot.

?It?s close, it?s close, it?s close!? bellows the Brandon University public-address announcer.

    Then, swish.

?He did it, he did it!?

After making the shot, Cheung, shirt now untucked, runs around the court, arms outstretched like a human airplane, before being mobbed by his players and Kaluzniak.

The incredible moment has garnered more than just online notoriety for Cheung and his school.

The former South Surrey coach?s feat was picked up by a number of news outlets in both Canada and the United States, including TSN, ESPN and USA Today.

?It has really taken off,? said Cheung, who took the reins of the Brandon men?s hoops team in 2010, after serving as a head coach at both Douglas College and Southridge School and as an assistant coach at Simon Fraser University.

On Wednesday, Cheung and Kaluzniak were interviewed by Soledad O?Brien on the CNN talk show, Starting Point.

It was on that show that Kaluzniak admitted he chose Cheung to shoot for him simply because he knew him.

?I never really thought it was going to happen, so I figured I might as well pick a friend of mine, and if he misses, he misses, and I can bug him a little bit,? Kaluzniak told CNN.
