Of the three basic needs of humans?food, shelter, and clothing?it is only the second that gives us access to easy cash through home equity. Aside from the sense of accomplishment that comes with being able to call a home your own, equity is the reason why it?s better to buy a home through a mortgage loan than renting forever.

Home equity loans allow you to borrow money by tapping in to the equity of your home. This is also known as a second mortgage and is usually used to finance home repairs, children?s college tuition, or pay off large medical bills. It is also used by those who want to pay off staggering credit card debt. The reason for this is because although the interest rate is usually higher than that of first mortgages, it is lower than that of unsecured loans like credit cards. Another reason why a home equity loan appeals to many borrowers is that the interest charges up to $100,000 can be taken as an itemized deduction in your federal income tax returns.

In a home equity loan, the bank usually allows you to borrow up to 80 percent of the equity of your home. Some lenders even grant a loan up to 125 percent of the value of the home. However, this requires higher fees and interest rates. To illustrate how much you can borrow in this kind of arrangement, let?s consider a hypothetical situation where you have taken a $200,000 mortgage for your home and paid $20,000 downpayment. At this point, your equity is equal to the downpayment of your home which is $20,000.

After five years, the value of your home is appraised at $300,000 and you have slashed down the principal further by paying another $20,000. So at this stage, the principal balance on your mortgage is $160,000 ($180,000 remaining balance after the downpayment minus the $20,000 additional payment on the balance). Your equity now is the present appraised value of your home ($300,000) minus the remaining balance ($160,000). Thus, your equity is $140,000.

If you wanted to borrow $40,000 from your equity for a medical emergency, then you will have to see if that falls within the 80 percent limits of your equity. So your combined mortgage balance should you go through with this loan becomes the original balance ($160,000) plus the home equity loan you wish to take ($40,000). The total then is $200,000 which is less than 80 percent of the current value of your home, making your intended $40,000 home equity loan possible, provided that you meet the lender?s other requirements.

There are two kinds of home equity loans: 1) Fixed Rate Home Equity Loans and 2) Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOC). While both have differences which we will discuss below, they are similar in the sense that the terms usually range from5to 15 years. They also have to be repaid in full in the event that the property in which they are borrowed against gets sold.

A fixed rate loan is a home equity loan that gives a lump-sum amount to the borrower. This must be paid back over a period of time at a pre-agreed rate of interest which will remain the same over the life of the loan. The interest begins right after the money is released by the bank.

A HELOC is a newer type of home equity loan which works in a similar manner as that of other types of personal loans. Some HELOC lenders even provide their borrowers with a credit card. In this home equity loan, the borrowers are pre-approved for a particular spending limit, allowing them to withdraw money when they need it. The payments per month are varied since the HELOC is tied to the current interest rate. Like a fixed rate loan, the amount must be repaid once the term of the loan expires.

CelebrityMe - Facebook Game from MMOHUNTER.COM

Have you ever envied the celebrities dressing to kill and posing to enchant on the red carpet? Have you wished at least once that you are the center of a party or the cover figure in fashion magazines? Or have you dreamed, no, stop all envy, wish or dream and BE the celebrity in CelebrityMe, the new title on Facebook.

CelebrityMe

You start from creating your celebrity. Just as most celebrities will present the perfect image, you have to go through a detailed customization selecting from hair (up to 111 options), eyes (27), mouth (18), nose (9) and skin color. Once the creation is done, you dress up in vintage style and next moment you are already in front of the Ming?s Shangri-La Theater. Pose for paparazzi, sign autography for a fan, star in a movie and accept an interview from Whitney Opera. And with the interview, all flashes back to your early life in a little place called Venice Beach where you enter the world of glamour and rise to finally make the meteoric success.

Back in the town of Venice Beach, you read tablets to learn who?s who, go shopping to meet different dressing codes in style of business, casual, nightlife, vintage and beach, pose for photographers from vogue magazines like Peeps and Me Weekly, attend parties and star in movies to boost popularity, and so on and so forth. Styled side-scrolling, the town is generally divided into three zones ? storefronts for shopping (except the cinema) on the top, Greenland in the middle for movie shows, and beach for personal activities such as doing yoga or taking sunbath in preparation for gigs and films. Scattered here and there are NPCs ? photographers, social butterfly, street performers and musicians, etc. ? who will take you into parties, shows, rap challenge and the like.

To star in a movie, you first go shopping for the required clothing, then spin to select a scene, sometimes cast Facebook friends or NPCs in certain roles, watch it play on in cinema, see the positive reviews pop up and then collect money. Honestly, it?s not very interesting: the scenes are stale and lousy (luckily that you can skip the showing part in cinema) and not a single design infuses fun into clicking. It?s not much different in other activities. And all activities cost certain Energy and have a cool down time.

Being on Facebook, it is no exception in terms of Friend Invite. In some quests, you have to ask friends to gather certain items; and also in films, sometimes you need to cast friends in a role, or spend cash gained by playing or Glitz, the premium currency hiring NPC instead. Micro-transaction is certainly one way to make profits, but not the only one in the game. You can also find ads pop up when you watch movies in cinema and the direct realistic, in contrast to the stylish, rolling headlines from hitfix, such as Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson explains why ?Wrath of the Titans? tops ?Clash?, or Bon Iver collaborates with Flaming Lips on ?Ashes in the Air?.

CelebrityMe is a game that?s targeted specific type of players instead of wide audience. It depicts the celebrity lifestyle not as shining and interesting as you imagined. Initially appealing, everything in it falls flat quickly and fades into emptiness. Perhaps, a unintended parody for the reality?

The Prometheus Decision: No Worries, No Problem | IPWatchdog ...

The biotech community has been chattering ever since the Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories (?Prometheus?) ruling was issued by the U.S. Supreme Court March 20, 2012.? Biotech folks, unaccustomed to the flurry of appellate activity surrounding some recent biotech cases, including the July 2011 Federal Circuit decision, Assoc. for Molecular Pathology et al. v. U.S.P.T.O. and Myriad Genetics, 2010-1406 (2011), are understandably nervous and have been engaged in a parlor game of guessing the effects of the decision on the biotech industry.? The dinner discussions in my own household have centered on the subject (my kids think their parents are total nerds).? Several posts and the many comments on this august blog and on other blogs are indicators that the biotech patent bar has found itself thrust into the legal limelight in a series of decisions which many fear may seriously harm the biotechnology industry, still struggling in a slow economy.? In fact, the stock prices of several prominent biotech companies fell at the news of the Prometheus ruling, including Myriad?s stocks, which had fallen 9% at one point.? As many of my esteemed colleagues have and will continue to dissect the case, I will instead focus on the effect of the decision on the future of biotech patents.

Unlike many in the biotech community I do not think the Prometheus decision will break the biotech industry or even seriously affect it .? Much like the car mechanic in a small Caribbean island told me when my engine light came on in my rental car, ?no worries, no problem!? (our car, in fact, never broke down, even on a mountain road with no shoulders).?? I believe the holding in Prometheus prevents what could be a future legal quagmire, where overly-broad patents could serve to block entire fields of practice and create an enforcement nightmare in which ghosts of legal uncertainty and licensing ambiguities would haunt hospital hallways, R&D labs, boardrooms, ?and investment entities throughout the country.? If the Prometheus decision would have gone the other way, it would not have been status quo, but rather been fairly harmful to future innovation.

The technology involved is a therapeutic method involving thiopurine treatment of persons with intestinal tract autoimmune disease.? Thiopurines are a class of pharmaceuticals called nucleoside analogs, which mimic naturally-occurring nucleosides, the subunits making up DNA or RNA ? genetic material.? Nucleoside analogs include the well-known cancer drugs fluorouracil and ara-C, as well as HIV drug AZT (Retrovir) and the shingles drug, famcylcovir (Famvir), among many others.? A good review by Dr. William Plunkett?s group (MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas) is found here..? There are many patents which cover the products and methods of using these compounds and those patents will still be safely in place, with proper claims drafting.

The difference in Prometheus, in my humble opinion, is in the claim language itself and is a drafting problem, rather than a subject matter issue.? The claim(s) at issue include:

?A method of optimizing therapeutic efficacy for treatment of an immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorder, comprising: a) administering a drug providing 6-thiopurine to a subject?, b) determining the level of 6-thioguanone in said subject?, and wherein the level of 6-thioguanine less than about? indicates a need to increase the amount of drug??.

The ?wherein? clause is considered by the Court as a separate method step.? The administering step was dismissed by the Court as merely identifying the artisan who would practice the invention.? The key step in the claim then, is the ?determining? step.? This claim wording, with all due respect to the claim drafter, is so wrong on so many levels that it is hard to key in on any one aspect.? When I was an ?Examiner, I would have rejected this claim as merely stating an inherent property of the drug metabolism ? a rejection under 35 U.S.C. 101, as being non-statutory subject matter.? The drug is administered, which is an active step, but there really is nothing else in the claim.? The ?determining? limitation is a mental step, and the ?wherein? clause is even worse ? because the limitation just indicates a need to increase the drug.? None of these steps do anything except describe a natural product whereby the body itself metabolizes a drug to a certain level.? In other words, an ?administering? step does not rescue a method claim when the other steps consist of a mental step (?determining?) and a stated need to do something.

While I don?t disagree with the Court?s conclusions, the danger I think they created in this decision was that lower courts may start to hold all drug therapy claims invalid, because of course, all therapeutics are metabolized by the body without human intervention.? I would have liked to see more clarity from the court on the extent to which a claim might pass muster.

It is clear that the Court zeroed in on their core concern ? of tipping the balance from the exclusivity of a patent grant on one hand and the flow of information needed for future innovation on the other.? Whenever the Court mentions a ?balance,? the patent bar should get nervous because invariably, ?balancing tests? will soon find their way into future lower court decisions that bear little semblance to what (we think) the Court intended in the decision.

Since the Prometheus claims included two non-statutory components: a mental process, the ?determining? step, and an inherent characteristic (metabolism by the body), if the Court would have issued a ruling with the opposite holding, I can envision a scenario where lower courts would start finding claims based on either mental processes or inherent characteristics as being patentable subject matter.? The problems are obvious ? think thought police barging into a patient?s hospital room as her physician contemplates the correct dosing (?determining the level of??) after reading the results of the serum drug level testing.? The scope of these future claims could bar whole areas of R&D, where the scope of the claims would so broad that normal medical decisions could be blocked by a patent.

The Court, in essence states as a question, that there is nothing more to the issue than a ?drafting effort designed to monopolize the law of nature itself,? but sort of held on other grounds, namely a grounds based more on public policy (citing the Benson case): there is a ?concern that patent law not inhibit further discovery by improperly tying up the future laws of nature.?? In the first respect, my position is similar to that of the Court: Prometheus highlights more of a drafting problem ? not a subject matter problem.? The exclusivity vs. innovation debate has always been the center of the patent system, so the Court broke no new grounds in public policy.? The claims at the center of the decision needed no intervention on the part of the Supreme Court to be rejected, but needed to be invalidated nonetheless.? However, the fact that the Court chose to hear the case means that they determined that there were issues beyond drafting errors for which they felt needed to be addressed.? The efforts of the Court to force the biotech industry to tighten up their claim language to not include products of nature are needed, as evidenced by the issuance of the two Prometheus patents considered by the Court.

The decision in Prometheus centered on the particular claim language, not on biotech patents in general, as addressed by Justice Breyer: ?The laws of nature at issue here are narrow laws that may have limited applications, but the patent claims that embody them nonetheless implicate this concern. They tell a treating doctor to measure metabolite levels and to consider the resulting measurements in light of the statistical relationships they describe.?? (Emphasis added). Justice Breyer then states, ?[t]he ?determining? step too is set forth in highly general language covering all processes that make use of the correlations after measuring metabolites, including later discovered processes that measure metabolite levels in new ways.?? Thus, the folks that are giddy about the possible Supreme Court overturn of all biotech patents based on the narrow confines of this decision are likely to be disappointed.

(Note: during the drafting of this post, the Supreme Court granted Cert. in the Myriad case and remanded the case back to the Federal Circuit to reconsider the case based upon the Prometheus decision.? 566 U.S. __, 11-725, March 26, 2012)

(AP) ? Diego Maradona was restrained by security staff as he confronted opposition fans in the stands after the team's latest match, angry at threats and abuse directed toward wives and girlfriends of his Al Wasl players.

Maradona called the Al Shabab fans "cowards" on Thursday after they heckled the women, including what the local media said was his girlfriend during his team's 2-0 loss. The scene, posted on Friday on YouTube, showed an angry Maradona jostling with opposition fans and security and then helping escort the women to safety.

The women were eventually led by players and the police from Al Shabab's stadium. The girlfriend of one of the players, Juan Mercier, tripped and fell down the stairs before Mercier ran to her aid. Local media reported no one was seriously hurt.

"Some people are cowards. They only attack women and have no courage to confront men," Maradona said according to The Gulf News. "This is the first time I am upset with the fans. If they are angry with me they should know that I did it (climbed the stands) for my (girlfriend) because someone was calling her names. They shouldn't be angry with me. They should be angry with the people who did this. They are cowards, not real fans."

The dispute started when Al Wasl fans started heckling Al Shabab's Brazilian striker Ciel, who set up the first goal and scored the second.

Maradona signed a two-year contract with the United Arab Emirates club in May. Since then, he's warned he would quit if the club doesn't increase its budget for players next season and had run-ins with rival coaches. His goalkeeper was banned for 17 games for slapping an opposition coach.

Maradona's arrival has yet to lift the club from a disappointing season.

The 1986 World Cup-winning Argentine was expected to elevate the club back to the top. Instead, it sits in fifth place, 15 points behind league leader Al Ain with only a month and a half left in the season. It also has been knocked out of several cup competitions, and Maradona has conceded Al Wasl has little chance of picking up any hardware this season.

94% The Secret World of Arrietty

All Critics (113) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (106) | Rotten (7)

As pretty as it is, this Secret World is too Earthbound by far.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a marvelously captivating animated feature about very tiny people and the full-scale world they inhabit.

Yonebayashi gives Arrietty an excellent sense of balance, with the adventure aspects of the story, which feel legitimately dangerous providing well-paced contrast the film's more placid moments.

It's an enjoyable and attractive-looking film, but a little of that "Speed Racer" energy wouldn't have been such a bad thing.

The visual details are inventive, and the animation - particularly the colors - is lovely.

"The Secret World of Arrietty'' is a feast for the eyes that will engage the entire family.

It certainly belongs in the second rank of Ghibli fantasies. But give it a chance.

Most will be caught up in its beautiful spell, immersed in great storytelling at its finest.

The soft-focus animation has an impressionistic quality, as if a gentle breeze had wafted across a Monet canvas.

This smart, winsome fairy tale is not quite Hiyao Miyazaki, but it still might be the best animated film that (some few) will see all year.

Another Studio Ghibli wonder, as heartbreaking for its devotion to craft, artistry and intelligent storytelling (for viewers of all ages) as for its themes of inevitable exile and impossible love.

There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'

...yet another jewel in the crown of Studio Ghibli.

...creates a sense of wide-eyed wonder and discovery as we experience the awe-inspiring mysteries of an ordinary house as seen from the four-inch borrower's point of view.

The animation, a gorgeous blend of bewitching watercolored backgrounds and poignantly rendered characters, is, as ever, beyond reproach.

What is most effective is the way the sense of peaceful shelter and retreat in the country setting contrasts with the precariousness of the situations faced by Shawn and Arrietty.

It's hard to imagine this scenario playing out with more delicacy and care than animator-turned-director Yonebayashi Hiromasa brings to bear.

Arrietty has an elegiac mood, like a more wan and sedate Toy Story.

Gently enchanting, an extraordinary adventure

There may not be a frenzy of action and fast cuts but each scene has meticulous details about how the borrowers live, how they make use of the things in their environment to survive.

Tiny people who live in the walls of a rural home are put at risk when they are discovered by the humans residing there. Studio Ghibli offers a soothing animated version of the classic children's novels.

the basic elements of loneliness, friendship, and the fragility of life are intact, along with that ineffable sense of wonder, melancholy, and magic

By being less bizarre than SPIRITED AWAY and having more of a human center to the film, THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY is one of Studio Ghibli's best efforts to date.

A beautiful family film based on THE BORROWERS will delight audiences of all ages

The Secret World of Arrietty is an engaging and warm story of a lovely friendship that has enough action and humour to satisfy all ages, and boy, it's awfully pretty.

Terror victims barred from al-Qaida member's funds

(AP) ? A federal judge has barred victims of the September 2001 terror attacks from claiming money an alleged al-Qaida member invested with a Chicago futures brokerage firm.

U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kennelly on Tuesday granted a government motion to reject the victims' claims to nearly $7 million.

The U.S. Department of Justice claims Abu al Tayyeb, through an associate, deposited nearly $27 million into an account with R.J. O'Brien & Associates in 2005. But poor investment decisions caused the money to dwindle.

Federal officials froze the assets and are attempting to get the money.

Terror victims claim Tayyeb raised money for al-Qaida and plotted U.S. attacks. Victims' attorney Sean Carte says they might amend their legal argument, adding there are a number of ways to get the money.

(AP) ? The parents of a slain Florida teenager are blaming police for leaking information about their son being suspended for marijuana and details about the fight he had with the shooter that portrayed the teen as the aggressor.

Trayvon Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, and family attorneys said Monday that it was part of an effort to demonize her 17-year-old son who was shot and killed last month by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

"They killed my son and now they're trying to kill his reputation," Fulton told reporters.

Martin was suspended by Miami-Dade County schools because traces of marijuana were found in a plastic baggie in his book bag, family spokesman Ryan Julison said. Martin was serving the suspension when he was shot Feb. 26.

The Sanford Police Department insisted there was no authorized release of the new information but acknowledged there may have been a leak. City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. said it would be investigated and the person responsible could be fired.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said the link between the youth and marijuana should have no bearing on the probe into his shooting death. State and federal agencies are investigating, with a grand jury set to convene April 10.

"If he and his friends experimented with marijuana, that is completely irrelevant," Crump said. "What does it have to do with killing their son?"

The state Department of Juvenile Justice confirmed Monday that Martin does not have a juvenile offender record. The information came after a public records request by The Associated Press.

Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense and has not been arrested. Because Martin was black and Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother, the case has become a racial flashpoint that has civil rights leaders and others leading a series of protests in Sanford and around the country.

Meanwhile, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Zimmerman told police he lost Martin in the neighborhood he regularly patrolled and was walking back to his vehicle when the youth approached him from behind. The two exchanged words, Zimmerman said, and Martin then punched him in the nose, jumped on top of him and began banging his head on a sidewalk. Zimmerman said he began crying for help; Martin's family thinks it was their son who was crying out. Witness accounts differ and 911 tapes in which the voices are heard are not clear.

The Sanford police statement said the newspaper story was "consistent" with evidence turned over to prosecutors.

Despite the news of Martin's possible actions the night of the shooting, rallies demanding the arrest of the 28-year-old Zimmerman spread from Florida to Indiana.

Thousands rallied Monday on the steps of the Georgia state Capitol. The crowd chanted "I am Trayvon!" and "Arrest Zimmerman now!" The protest ended with the crowd linking hands and singing, "We Shall Overcome."

Students from Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University encouraged their fellow students to talk to their lawmakers about gun laws. Students wore hoodies that said, "I am Trayvon Martin" and lofted signs reading, "Don't shoot!" and "I could be next."

"We're humans, and even more so, we're American citizens, and we have the expectation that justice will be delivered," said Ronnie Mosley, 20, a student at Morehouse who helped organize the rally.

Back in Sanford, city officials named a 23-year veteran of the police department as acting chief. The appointment of Capt. Darren Scott, who is African-American, came days after Chief Bill Lee, who is white, temporarily stepped down as the agency endured withering criticism over its handling of the case.

"I know each one of you ? and everyone watching ? would like to have a quick, positive resolution to this recent event," Scott told reporters. "I urge everyone to let the system take its course."

The Sanford City Commission held its first meeting Monday since giving Lee a no confidence vote, which led to his ouster. Martin's parents both addressed the panel, urging them to take steps to arrest Zimmerman. More than 500 people crowded into the meeting, which was moved from City Hall to the Sanford Civil Center.

"We are asking for justice," said Tracy Martin, the teenager's father.

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton warned commissioners that Sanford risked becoming a 21st century version of civil rights struggle in the South during the 1960s.

Sharpton said Martin's parents endured "insults and lies" Monday over reports that their son attacked Zimmerman.

Also Monday, an attorney for Martin's mother confirmed that she filed trademark applications for two slogans containing her son's name: "Justice for Trayvon" and "I Am Trayvon." The applications said the trademarks could be used for such things as DVDs and CDs.

The trademark attorney, Kimra Major-Morris, said in an email that Fulton wants to protect intellectual property rights for "projects that will assist other families who experience similar tragedies."

Asked if Fulton had any profit motive, the attorney replied: "None."

Simply Bike ? multilingual parenting: paula {spanish, english, catalan}

Name: Paula Herrera-Sikl?dy

Number of children and ages: Jacob (8) and Chiara (almost 11)

The languages your family uses: Spanish, English, Catalan

bilingual parenting

What motivated you to raise your child(ren) bilingually:

I grew up in a French school in Catalonia, Spain, where even the dumbest kids were able to manage three languages. When I was 3, I was left in a classroom with a teacher that would only speak French to me ?or so I?m told, because I have no memory of ever not knowing French. I absorbed it like a sponge, without noticing. I have never lived in a French speaking country and I never spoke it at home and yet it?s almost a mother language to me. Multilingualism has always been part of my life in a very natural way. If we lived in Spain, I would make sure that my children learn something besides Spanish and Catalan. Living in the US, however, I also feel that not speaking to my children in Spanish would be like stealing something from them. Spanish and Catalan are part of their heritage.

How does the bilingualism work in your family (i.e., who speaks what language? When do you switch? How do you decide on what language to use and when?)

Each parent speaks his/her mother language to the children: Spanish for me, Catalan for dad. That also applies to the relatives of each one. The children can clearly tell which language belongs in each situation. Their dad and I speak Catalan to each other, so if address him, I?ll speak Catalan. But if I then turn to the children in the next sentence, I?ll continue in Spanish. The children also switch languages when addressing mom or dad. This may sound really hard and awkward, but it is truly the way communication in a group happens in Catalonia. Everyone is bilingual, so nobody gets lost.
English enters the scene when someone who doesn?t understand Spanish/Catalan is present.

What are some of the challenges you?ve encountered?

Sooner or later, English becomes their strongest language, and then they will try to use it with you. It?s just easier for them, and they often do it without even realizing. It is crucial to be very, very stubborn, and ask them to switch back to the other language ?every time. If I give up, I know the day will come, 10 or 20 years from now, when they?ll complain to me ?Why didn?t you force me to speak Spanish?!?? Also, one day your sweet baby will be a cranky teenager, and I want to keep the advantage of being able to argue in my native tongue ?

Finding formal education of Spanish has been really hard. Several years ago, I tried to organize a class for Chiara, who was then in first grade. Ames has a good number of children who speak Spanish at home and are thus relatively fluent, and I expected that gathering a group for a once-a-week class would be an easy task. Sadly, I encountered a cold response. All my attempts to circulate some information through the school system were blocked by the district or school administrations. I had a perplexing conversation with someone who teaches Spanish as a second language, who tried to convince me that teaching my children Spanish would prevent them from learning proper English. Out of the few parents I was able to contact, only a handful were interested and unfortunately we have never been able to find a suitable schedule for all. As for the rest, I can only sadly suspect that they bought into the impossibility of bilingualism and see Spanish as an obstacle for their children.

So we?ve settled for tutors. Chiara and Jacob?s grammar and vocabulary has improved a lot, and they are learning to read and write properly in Spanish. It?s worth every penny. They regularly complain because they have to stay home and study (one hour a week!), and individual classes can be dull, so we?ve had several conversations where I try to explain to them everything I?m telling you, and why this is so important, and they understand. I know we?ll have to talk it over many times again, but that?s what education is all about.

What have been some of the rewards of raising a bilingual child?

Along with language come culture and a different way of seeing the world. If our children did not speak Spanish and Catalan, they would not be able to connect to their roots and communicate with their relatives, and there would be many things I would not be able to share with them. Of course, because my language is Spanish, I also enjoy knowing that I?m allowing them to communicate with roughly half a billion people in the world. That?s not a small number.

What role does your extended family play in your decision and ability to raise a bilingual child?

Every time a relative comes here and every trip to Europe are intensive language courses for our children. Their Spanish or Catalan flourishes instantaneously. Being able to communicate with their beloved cousins, grandparents, etc., is a great incentive for them.

What resources have you found useful?

Local resources are scarce. Over the years, I have brought books and DVDs with me from Spain, and relatives help with more of them as gifts. The public library has little to offer and most of it is geared toward Spanish as a second language or toward Spanish-speaking adults. Children books in Spanish available in the US are often very poor translations into an artificial when not incorrect Spanish.

What are some of your long-term goals?

I would like my children to master Spanish by the time they leave high school. I hope they?ll be able to write correctly and to read serious literature (I don?t need them to feel comfortable with Cervantes, but I hope they will be able to enjoy Garc?a M?rquez, just like I struggle with Shakespeare but enjoy every word of Steinbeck). If they chose to do so, they would be perfectly ready to live and work in a Spanish-speaking country.

What advice would you give a new parent starting the process?

Be stubborn. Remember that, down the road, your child will be infinitely grateful for your efforts: you?re making them a gift. Set a high bar for your hopes: children can learn languages very easily if the environment forces them to.

**

Thank you so much for your contribution, Paula! I think I need to write ?be stubborn? on a post-it and put it on my fridge; a great mantra indeed! Paula also raised a great point about trying to organize the foreign language community that you see missing from your town by taking action yourself. I?d love to hear from other readers out there who have attempted similar feats and who have maybe not met with resistance from local schools and administration. How did you go about organzing a second language group? Does anyone have a success story to share?

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of people gathered Sunday to attend the highlight of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to this violence-troubled country: an open-air Mass in the shadow of the Christ the King monument, one of the most important symbols of Mexican Catholicism.

With roads closed, pilgrims walked on foot for miles with plastic lawn chairs, water and backpacks. Old women walked with canes. Some Mass-goers wrapped themselves in blankets or beach towel-sized Vatican flags, trekking past vendors selling sunhats, flags, potato chips and bottles of juice.

Hundreds of young priests in white and black cassocks shouted "Christ Lives!" and "Long Live Christ the King!" as they waited to pass through the metal detectors.

Benedict wanted to come to Guanajuato state specifically to see and bless the statue, which Pope John Paul II always wanted to visit but never did, said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The 72-foot (22-meter) bronze monument of Christ with its outstretched arms serves as a potent reminder to Mexicans of the 1926-1929 Roman Catholic uprising against the government and its anti-clerical laws that prohibited public Masses such as the one Benedict will celebrate before an estimated 350,000 people.

Guanajuato state was the site of some of the key battles of the Cristero War, so-called because its protagonists said they were fighting for Christ the King. Tens of thousands of people died before peace was restored. The region remains Mexico's most conservatively Catholic.

The statue "expresses an identity of the Mexican people that contains a whole history in relation to the testimony of faith and those who fought for religious freedom at the time," said Monsignor Victor Rene Rodriguez, secretary general of the Mexican bishops conference.

Benedict will fly over the monument, modeled after Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue, by helicopter on his way to celebrate Mass and will bless it from the air, Lombardi said. After nightfall Sunday he will remotely inaugurate its new lighting system.

On Saturday, Benedict met with President Felipe Calderon in Guanajuato city and later told about 4,000 children massed in the colonial-era city's Peace Plaza that they are each a "gift of God to Mexico and the world."

"The disciple of Jesus does not respond to evil with evil, but is always an instrument of good instead, a herald of pardon, a bearer of happiness, a servant of unity," Benedict said. "I will pray for all of you, so that Mexico may be a place in which everyone can live in serenity and harmony."

He called on the young to be messengers of peace in a country traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in a drug war that has escalated during a government offensive against cartels.

Eight relatives of victims of violent crime were invited to meet the pope as he left Guanajuato's government palace, Calderon's office said. Lombardi noted it wasn't a sit-down meeting so much as a brief greeting.

While the pope drew a rapturous response from the faithful, his second day in Mexico was not without criticism, particularly concerning the church's treatment of children and sexual abuse.

Victims of Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, launched a book Saturday containing documents from the Vatican archives showing that Holy See officials knew for decades that Maciel was a drug addict who sexually abused his seminarians.

Alberto Athie, former priest and one of three co-authors of "The Desire Not to Know," called on Benedict to publicly recognize the church's responsibility for Maciel's abuse.

"The church won't fall. On the contrary, it will be reconstructed," Athie said.

The 84-year-old pope, who will be going to Cuba on Monday, did not directly address the scandal during his limited remarks Saturday. But Lombardi said his words about the need to protect children from violence referred also to the need to protect them from priestly sexual violence.

Lombardi insisted that neither Benedict nor John Paul covered up for Maciel as the book alleges. Benedict, when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, headed the office that received the sex abuse complaint from Maciel's victims in 1998; it took the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith eight years to sentence Maciel to a lifetime of penance and prayer.

"I have to say that both popes were men, men of truth and transparency," Lombardi said. "I think it's truly unjust to consider Pope Benedict as someone who worked against the truth and transparency."

Benedict has taken up John Paul's drive to reach out to young Catholics, rallying millions of young faithful to join him for World Youth Days, the Catholic youth festivals held once every three years. And he has made the young a focus of his trip to Mexico.

That fits with the Vatican's drive to re-evangelize parts of the world where Catholicism has weakened, trying to rally the next generation to embrace a faith that their parents may have abandoned. While Europe has been Benedict's focus to date, Mexico also has seen its number of Catholics fall.

"The Mexican church feels like it's lost a few generations of Catholics," said Joseph Palacios, a professor of Latin American studies at Georgetown University, citing the battles over liberation theology that drove many left-leaning Catholics away. To get back its numbers, the Mexican church is "moving forward with the new generation," he said.

Tens of thousands, many of them teenagers, on Saturday watched the pope's remarks on big screen televisions set up in a pilgrim camp at the site of the papal Mass planned for Sunday. The atmosphere was like a rock concert as the TVs showed the pope emerging on a balcony in Guanajuato, with campers letting go a roaring chant of "Benedicto, Benedicto."

"We young people are getting closer to the church and to God, instead of getting closer to drugs and violence," said Juan Daniel Pacheco, 18, of Apaseo el Grande in Guanajuato state as he sought shade with his friends at one of the campgrounds that were quickly filling with faithful arriving for Sunday's Mass. "We are young people who will be able to change Mexico."

Of the 43.5 million Mexicans under age 20, 36.2 million are Catholic, or 83.2 percent, just under the national average. The largest group of Mexicans overall are children aged 5 to 9 ? a prime target for Benedict's efforts to rebuild a church that has fallen victim to the same secular trends that have emptied churches across Europe.

At the entrance to Guanajuato, Benedict received the keys to the city and then traveled by popemobile past faithful crowded along the cobblestone streets of the historic colonial-era city.

People packed narrow streets, balconies and rooftops and cheered wildly even as it started to sprinkle. Children and teenagers ran through crowds as Benedict passed to catch another glimpse of him. At one point, someone handed him a baby through an open window of the bulletproof popemobile. He kissed the baby and an aide passed the child back.

A group of 13 indigenous teenage girls traveled for 20 hours cramped in a van from northern Mexico just to see the pope officiate Sunday's Mass. Once in Guanajuato, the Tarahumara got an invitation from the office of Mexico's first lady, Margarita Zavala, to be in the crowd standing right beneath the balcony where Benedict gave his message to Mexico's youth.

The girls, aged 12 to 17, spent three days sewing their traditional dresses for the pope's visit.

Sister Sanjuana Oliva Briones, a Tarahumara Indian who led the group, said the girls were excited and happy with the experience.

"For many it is the first time they have been to a city. Others understand little Spanish," she said.
