Cemetary tourism: 'It's great to be alive in Colma!'

The Colma, Calif., town motto ? ?It?s great to be alive in Colma!? ? has a cryptic meaning to those familiar with grave undertakings. In Colma, the dead outnumber the living nearly 1,000 to one.

?We have 17 cemeteries ? one exclusively for beloved pets,? said Mayor Helen Fisicaro. ?The cemeteries are like our parks. They are absolutely beautiful, and people come from all over to enjoy them.?

Colma, with a?population of about 1,600,?is the final resting place for more than 1.5 million deceased. She said the dead provide a living for numerous florists, landscapers, monument erectors and other funeral-related businesses.?

Death became a Colma growth industry nearly 100 years ago when neighboring San Francisco deemed its real estate too precious to squander on the dearly departed, according to Pat Hatfield, president of the Colma Historical Association since 1993. Suddenly, final resting places became transitory.

?All the cemeteries were evicted,? she said. ?The graves needed to be moved outside of city limits.?

City leaders settled on Colma, less than 10 miles south of downtown San Francisco, in San Mateo County.

?It was convenient,??Hatfield said. ?Colma was as close as funeral homes could get and still be able to get back in one day.?

The hectic and trying relocation process resulted in what today is a community of uncommon peacefulness.

?The cemeteries are each so beautiful and all have their own personalities,? Hatfield said, adding that the cemeteries share characteristics as diverse as San Francisco.

Many are like ethnic neighborhoods without the restaurants. There are Serbian, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Chinese and Jewish cemeteries.

Most popular is Pets Rest Cemetery, home to the graves and lovingly rendered monuments to more than 13,000 dogs, cats, ocelots, goldfish, monkeys, turtles and even?cheetahs, said owner Philip C?de Baca.

?People are really moved by what they see here,? Baca said. ?They realize there are certain things everyone has to do when any human dies. But the love people show a pet is really above and beyond.?

Many famous Californians born elsewhere live in perpetuity in Colma. Baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, jazz musician/"Peanuts" theme composer Vince Guaraldi and Manson murder victim and coffee heiress Abigail Folger are among the eternal residents at Holy Cross Cemetery; William Randolph Hearst is at Cypress Lawn; Wyatt Earp, a man who became famous in Tombstone, Ariz., has his own tombstone in Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, as does blue jeans icon Levi Strauss.

Mark Fontana is a Colma chiseler in the best sense of the word. His grandfather, Valero Fontana, in 1921 founded the family mason business now going four generations strong.

He?s built mausoleums worth $500,000 and said the average amount spent on a monument is ?between $2,000 and $5,000.? He hastens to add that the numbers diminish the personal investment unseen in the work contracts.

?We don?t advertise, and in Colma, we?re always busy,? he said. ?This is one of those businesses where people pay us and then they send us thank you notes. It?s very gratifying.?

New findings contradict dominant theory in Alzheimer's disease

Friday, October 28, 2011

For decades the amyloid hypothesis has dominated the research field in Alzheimer's disease. The theory describes how an increase in secreted beta-amyloid peptides leads to the formation of plaques, toxic clusters of damaged proteins between cells, which eventually result in neurodegeneration. Scientists at Lund University, Sweden, have now presented a study that turns this premise on its head.

The research group's data offers an opposite hypothesis, suggesting that it is in fact the neurons' inability to secrete beta-amyloid that is at the heart of pathogenesis in Alzheimer's disease.

The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, shows an increase in unwanted intracellular beta-amyloid occurring early on in Alzheimer's disease. The accumulation of beta-amyloid inside the neuron is here shown to be caused by the loss of normal function to secrete beta-amyloid.

Contrary to the dominant theory, where aggregated extracellular beta-amyloid is considered the main culprit, the study instead demonstrates that reduced secretion of beta-amyloid signals the beginning of the disease.

The damage to the neuron, created by the aggregated toxic beta-amyloid inside the cell, is believed to be a prior step to the formation of plaques, the long-time hallmark biomarker of the disease.

Professor Gunnar Gouras, the senior researcher of the study, hopes that the surprising new findings can help push the research field in a new direction.

"The many investigators and pharmaceutical companies screening for compounds that reduce secreted beta-amyloid have it the wrong way around. The problem is rather the opposite, that it is not getting secreted. To find the root of the disease, we now need to focus on this critical intracellular pool of beta-amyloid.

"We are showing here that the increase of intracellular beta-amyloid is one of the earliest events occurring in Alzheimer's disease, before the formation of plaques. Our experiments clearly show a decreased secretion of beta-amyloid in our primary neuron disease model. This is probably because the cell's metabolism and secretion pathways are disrupted in some way, leading beta-amyloid to be accumulated inside the cell instead of being secreted naturally", says Davide Tampellini, first author of the study.

The theory of early accumulation of beta-amyloid inside the cell offers an alternate explanation for the formation of plaques. When excess amounts of beta-amyloid start to build up inside the cell, it is also stored in synapses.

When the synapses can no longer hold the increasing amounts of the toxic peptide the membrane breaks, releasing the waste into the extracellular space. The toxins released now create the seed for other amyloids to gather and start forming the plaques.

Cardinals stun Texas, force World Series to Game 7 (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Hours after David Freese's home run plunked down on the grass patch beyond the center field wall, long after the ballpark emptied, a message still burned bright on the scoreboard: "See you TOMORROW NIGHT for Game 7 of the World Series!"

Whatever happens, whether the St. Louis Cardinals or Texas Rangers win, they'll have a hard time topping Thursday night.

"You had to be here to believe it," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said.

In one of the greatest thrillers in baseball history, the Cardinals twice rallied when they were down to their last strike of the season. First, Freese saved them with a two-run triple in the ninth, then Lance Berkman delivered a tying single in the 10th.

And when Freese led off the bottom of the 11th with his shot to beat Texas 10-9 and stomped on the plate, this Game 6 had already been stamped forever.

"Turned out to be one for the ages," said Daniel Descalso, who keyed a Cardinals comeback.

A Series that was dismissed by many around the country before it began for lacking glamour teams suddenly has turned into must-see TV. And fans can savor the prospect of the first World Series to reach Game 7 since 2002, when the Angels beat the Giants.

After it was over, La Russa wasn't willing to announce his starter ? many believe it will be ace Chris Carpenter on three days' rest for only the second time in his career.

"I learned what my body's going to feel like, what my stuff's going to be like," Carpenter said. "You go out there and you make pitches. We'll see what happens."

Matt Harrison is set to start for Texas. Derek Holland, who pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning in Game 4, could've been ready on regular rest after Wednesday's rainout. Instead, Texas manager Ron Washington used him in relief.

Home teams have won the last eight Game 7s in the World Series, a streak that started with the Cardinals beating Milwaukee in 1982.

Oh, and this: By far, the Cardinals have won the most Game 7s in Series history, going 7-3.

"There is tomorrow, now, for us," Cardinals star Albert Pujols said.

A sloppy game that made for terrible viewing turned terrific in the late innings. Freese added to the lore created by the Carlton Fisk homer in Game 6 of the 1975 Series and Bill Buckner's error in Game 6 of the 1986 Series.

"A ridiculous game, weird game," Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler said. "But I bet it was fun for the fans. We just came out on the wrong end."

To Freese, who was raised in the St. Louis area and was MVP of the NL championship series, it all reminded him of a game-ending home run Jim Edmonds hit in the 2004 playoffs.

"Growing up or whatever, and you see stuff like that happen, those become memories," said Freese, who immediately donated his bat and jersey to the Hall of Fame.

Tremendous theater, that is, except for Texas. The Rangers were that close to winning their first championship.

"I understand it's not over till you get that last out," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "I was just sitting there praying we got that last out. We didn't get it."

This was just the third time that a team one out from elimination in the World Series came back to win the game, according to STATS LLC. The New York Mets did it with Buckner's mistake and wound up winning the championship. In 1911, the New York Giants rallied past the Philadelphia A's in Game 5, but lost the next game.

Freese's tying triple off the wall and just over right fielder Nelson Cruz came on a 1-2 pitch from closer Neftali Feliz. In the 10th, after Josh Hamilton had homered to give Texas a two-run lead, Berkman's two-strike, two-out single made it 9-all.

"Initially I was like `Are you kidding me? My first AB off Feliz in this situation ever,'" Freese said. "I just beared down, got a pitch to hit. Initially I thought I hit it pretty good, I thought (Cruz) was going to grab it, so just a lot of emotions on that one."

Berkman came through on a 2-2 pitch from Scott Feldman, finishing off a two-run rally in the 10th.

"I was one strike away," Feldman said. "That pitch there, I didn't quite get it in enough and he was able to get enough of the bat on it to knock it into center field."

Busch Stadium was still in frenzy when Freese opened the 11th with his homer off Mark Lowe. Freese thrust his arm in the air as he rounded first base, and the crowd was delirious.

"Just an incredible feeling, seeing all my teammates at the dish waiting for me," said Freese, whose shirt was torn off during the celebration.

Texas trudged off the field as Freese circled the bases, having been so close to that elusive title. Much earlier, team president Nolan Ryan was high-fiving friends in the stands as Adrian Beltre and Cruz opened the seventh with home runs that helped Texas take a 7-4 lead.

"I'm not going to lose any sleep over it," Hamilton said. "We're just going to do everything we can to prepare. Guys are already talking about it. We're ready for Game 7. Shake it off and come back tomorrow. That's just our mentality. But it goes both ways. Seems like they had that mentality. too."

Allen Craig's solo homer in the eighth began the Cardinals' comeback. Jake Westbrook wound up with the win.

NOTES: Texas was 0 for 11 with two outs and runners in scoring position in the Series until Kinsler's RBI double. ... Berkman hit his first Series home run. He was moved up a spot to cleanup for this game. ... David Eckstein, MVP of the 2006 Series for St. Louis, threw out the first ball. ... Ninety-year-old Hall of Famer Stan Musial rode in on a golf cart during pregame festivities. ... The crowd of 47,325 was a record for 6-year-old Busch Stadium.

Commonwealth leaders raise polio vaccine spending (AP)

PERTH, Australia ? Commonwealth government leaders meeting in Australia agreed Saturday to step up efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, despite the Afghanistan war setting back vaccination efforts there and in neighboring Pakistan.

Leaders of Britain, Canada, Australia and Nigeria, as well as billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, committed tens of millions of dollars in additional funding toward the World Health Organization's campaign to wipe out the disabling disease from the four countries where it remains endemic ? India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

All the polio-endemic countries except for Afghanistan are represented at the three-day summit in the western Australian city of Perth. The summit comprises the leaders of 53 countries, most of them former British colonies.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said he was "seriously concerned" that polio infection rates had worsened in his country in recent years.

Pakistan was the only country in the world to increase reported polio infections last year. There were 144 cases in 2010, up from 89 in the previous year, according to WHO figures. So far this year, 118 cases have been reported in Pakistan ? the largest number of any country.

Gilani blamed the flow of people fleeing fighting on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, the inaccessibility of war zones to medical teams and religious "fanatics" opposed to vaccines for the failures of vaccination programs in the border regions.

But Pakistan's government remains committed to a target of eliminating polio by the end of this year, he said.

"No doubt we have a huge task ahead, but we remain determined to eradicate this and protect every child in Pakistan from the scourge of polio," Gilani told reporters.

In neighboring Afghanistan, polio infections have jumped from 30 last year to 41 so far this year.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said nations cannot accept the current situation where the world is only 99 percent polio free.

"If we fail to get rid of polio completely, we run the risk that the disease will spread back to countries where it's been eliminated," Cameron said.

Britain had already doubled its contribution to the 23-year-old WHO Global Polio Eradication Initiative for this year and 2012 when it announced in January an additional 40 million pound ($65 million) contribution.

Australia, which put polio on the Commonwealth meeting agenda, promised an addition 50 million Australian dollars ($54 million).

Gates used a video message to the Perth meeting to pledge an extra $40 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He warned that the campaign to eliminate polio forever was at a crossroads, saying recent cases in China demonstrated the risk of a polio resurgence.

China had been free of the paralytic disease for 11 years before an outbreak in the country's far western region that has paralyzed 17 people since July, killing one of them.

WHO said the polio strain detected in China traveled from neighboring Pakistan.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also pledged increased funding to polio surveillance, but did not specify an amount.

Harper said polio eradication was a key priority of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan. He said 85 percent of Afghanistan was polio free.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said his government's increasing its funding for polio vaccinations in the African nation from $17 million to $30 million annually should result in the disease disappearing by the end of 2012.

Nigeria has recorded 49 cases so far this year ? one more than all of 2010.

India recorded 44 cases in 2010, but this year has reported a single case, in January.

Hybrid Technology Could Bring 'Quantum Information Systems'

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at Purdue say the merging of plasmonics and nanophotonics is promising the emergence of new 'quantum information systems' far more powerful than today's computers. Plasmons are quasiparticles that combine electrons and photons. And by using them in place of the simple electrons of today's computers, they could overcome limitations in the operational speed of conventional integrated circuits. The technology hinges on using single photons for switching and routing in computers that would harness the exotic principles of quantum mechanics.'"

Fresh raids in Syria after deadly day of protests (AP)

BEIRUT ? Syrian troops conducted fresh raids and hunted down protesters Saturday after security forces killed about 40 people the previous day ? one of the deadliest in the country's seven-month uprising, activists said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said residents reported heavy machine-gun fire in the central city of Homs and sweeping raids and arrests around the eastern city of Deir el-Zour early Saturday.

The popular revolt against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has proved remarkably resilient over the past months, with protests erupting every week despite the near-certainty the government will respond with bullets and tear gas. The U.N. estimates the regime crackdown on the protests has killed 3,000 people since March.

Much of the bloodshed Friday happened after the protests had ended and security forces armed with machine guns chased protesters and activists, according to opposition groups monitoring the demonstrations. Authorities disrupted telephone and Internet service, they said.

The Syrian opposition's two main activist groups, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordinating Committees, said at least 40 people were killed on Friday.

Syria has largely sealed off the country from foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting, making it difficult to confirm events on the ground. Key sources of information are amateur videos posted online, witness accounts and details gathered by activist groups.

The regime appears to lack sufficient numbers of loyal troops to garrison all the centers of unrest at the same time, so government forces will often sweep through an area in the wake of protests, breaking up new gatherings and hunting activists, before being deployed elsewhere.

The result has been a monthslong stalemate. Still, the capture and subsequent death of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, under still-unclear circumstances, has energized the opposition. Last week, thousands of Syrians took to the streets shouting that Assad will be next.

On Friday, many protesters said they wanted a no-fly zone established over Syria to protect civilians in case the Syrian regime considers attacking protesters from the sky, the activist groups said. The protesters also called for international monitors, although most opposition groups reject the idea of foreign military intervention.

The Syrian government insists the unrest is being driven by terrorists and foreign extremists looking to stir up sectarian strife.

Hubris came before the Times Atlas's fall

Greenland's ice sheet in full retreat? Most definitely, according to a press release from HarperCollins, eagerly touting the 2011 edition of its Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World. Before anyone could compare old and new versions of the "Canada and Greenland" plate, the firm announced that its cartographers "had to erase 15 per cent of Greenland's once-permanent ice cover". The culprit, of course, was climate change.

Climate scientists reacted quickly. They knew the claim was wrong and feared a further backlash from the "climategate" dust-up of late 2009, when hacked email accounts at the University of East Anglia in Norwich suggested that researchers were cherry-picking data to support dubious theories of global warming. In that case, close scrutiny of the emails indicated that it was the hackers, not the researchers, who were spinning the evidence.

So gun-shy atmospheric scientists and glaciologists were keen to pounce on an obvious cartographic misstatement that might reflect negatively on their efforts.

Journalists eagerly joined the fray and promptly dubbed it "Atlasgate". With all of the evidence on the scientists' side, Collins Geo ? the HarperCollins imprint responsible for the atlas ? offered a feeble explanation that smacked of finger-pointing. Its double-page reference map had been based on information from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, Collins Geo said. The data centre quickly distanced itself from the project.

Apparently Collins Geo had misinterpreted the data, and this was used to compare the flawed map with an earlier counterpart from 1999 for the press statement that caused all the fuss. The National Snow and Ice Data Center, it became clear, would never have endorsed a 15?per cent shrinkage.

Mega-glitch

How does this kind of mega-glitch happen? An explanation lies partly in Collins Geo's apparent decision to produce the map in house. If that was the case, the firm might have avoided its embarrassment with the obvious quality-assurance step of sending page proofs to carefully chosen experts. Appropriate scientists seldom decline invitations to serve as reviewers.

Another explanation lies in the inherent persuasiveness of any map with a crisp appearance, a prestigious pedigree and the imprimatur of a large, well-known publishing house ? traits that not only confer clout in the cartographic marketplace but invite overconfidence and hubris. Clearly the Times Atlas enjoys the prestige of The Times newspaper as well as a long-standing association with the venerable John Bartholomew cartographic enterprise, a hallowed Edinburgh, UK, firm that HarperCollins acquired in the late 1980s.

It seems likely there was a belief that external review was unnecessary. Moreover, it seems that none of the publisher's marketing mavens compared their provocative God's-eye view with competing treatments on readily accessible scientific websites or Google Earth.

Hubris is not too strong a word to explain HarperCollins's predicament. A press release promising "concrete evidence of how climate change is altering the face of the planet forever" invites critical scrutiny by mainstream climate scientists as well as the self-proclaimed sceptics who are ever eager to pounce on overreaching pronouncements by the former. In Atlasgate, the pro-warming community, which outnumbers naysayers by perhaps 50 to 1, wasted no time in trashing the HarperCollins map. Sceptics never had an opportunity to cast themselves in their preferred role of the cautious challenger resisting a bloated, politically biased scientific establishment.

Small-scale, highly generalised topographic maps like those offering broad-brush coverage of fickle, fragile or seasonally variable features such as shallow inland seas and glaciers are a challenge for map authors striving for timeliness and accuracy. A New York Times blog about Atlasgate acknowledged that coastal ice can be particularly difficult to map on a broad scale because the ice margin is constantly dancing backward and forward. Even so, HarperCollins's claim that "15 per cent of the permanent ice cover? has melted away" can hardly be ascribed to the positional uncertainty of a low-resolution map.

Diplomatic minefield

Publishers of world atlases are leery of another capricious phenomenon: the thickets of geopolitical testiness and diplomacy. In the mid-1990s Microsoft Corporation committed a blunder when a new version of its operating system asked users to select a time zone by clicking on a tiny world map that violated India's take on its border with Pakistan. Quickly noticed by India's map police, the discrepancy precipitated a recall of 200,000 copies of Windows 95 ? all because eight out of 800,000 pixels were the wrong colour.

Place names can be equally touchy: South Korea strongly prefers "East Sea" to "Sea of Japan", and Iran has lobbied map publishers to hold the line against Saudi Arabia and its neighbours, who are anxious to replace "Persian Gulf" with "Arabian Gulf".

I have had first-hand experience of this cartographic pickiness. As one of three editors of the Perthes World Atlas, also marketed as the Cambridge World Atlas, I recently heard of a complaint that a colour scheme inspired by the Olympic rings perpetuated racist stereotypes. In selecting coloured backgrounds for index maps and lists of countries by continent, our designer had used yellow for Asia, brown for Africa and red for North America, while Europe ? with a long history of industrial pollution ? was coded green. A small matter, perhaps, but a clear warning that cartographic symbols and place names can be a minefield for unwary mapmakers.

In the Perthes example, five years passed before anyone complained. Would HarperCollins's glacial anomaly have been so widely condemned without the provocative press release? Most certainly not. Even so, map collectors might develop a fondness for the 2011 edition and its famously flawed plate. Like accidentally erroneous stamps and coins, the Atlasgate version offers a unique and intriguing story.

HBT: Rangers to start Wilson in Game 1

Not that there was any doubt, but the Rangers officially announced that C.J. Wilson will start Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

He?ll be matched up against Chris Carpenter, as both teams are able to arrange their rotations as they wanted thanks to neither LCS going the full seven games. Carpenter and the Cardinals are slight favorites in Game 1, but the Rangers are solid favorites for the entire series.

No word yet on who?ll follow Wilson in the Rangers? rotation, but manager Ron Washington went with Derek Holland in Game 2, Colby Lewis in Game 3, and Matt Harrison in Game 4 during both the ALDS and ALCS. Holland failed to make it out of the fifth inning in each of his last three starts, so it?s possible he could be bumped back.

Wilson is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA in seven career playoff starts, while Carpenter is 7-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 career postseason outings.

Pandora?s Westergren: The Biggest Tectonic Shift In Music Is From Terrestrial To Personalized Radio

ad2b90d9d6f84ce8b9d231b7d7792c9f_7This afternoon at The Web 2.0 Summit, Pandora Co-founder Tim Westergren sat down with Fortune Editor Adam Lashinsky to talk about what's going on at everybody's favorite personalized radio platform. For those who may have missed it, Pandora recently enjoyed a relatively high-profile IPO, putting its "P" ticker symbol right smack in the middle of "IPO" -- and the NYSE. Pandora priced at over $20 a share on its opening day, and is today trading around $15.20 per share. Furthermore, today the company counts 37 million active users and, as Westergren has said multiple times, has finally hit scale. Part of the reason that the co-founder believes that the company has been able to hit scale, and continue to grow across mobile and web platforms, is that the entire industry is shifting from broadcast/terrestrial radio to personalized radio.

Britney Spears, Boyfriend Get Steamy In 'Criminal' Video

Brit's real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick stars in Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears' posh but incredibly mean English boyfriend asks his lovely girlfriend, "Why don't we see that pretty little face of yours?" at the beginning of the "Criminal" video. That remark sets off a chain of events that will certainly leave Britney fans watching the Chris Marrs Piliero-directed ("I Wanna Go") video on repeat.

As Britney and her abusive beau make their way out of the party, with him yelling at her for standing up for herself as he flirted with other girls, they come across Britney's real-life boyfriend, Jason Trawick, who is playing one really hot bad guy with a heart of gold. The boyfriend slaps Britney, and Jason comes to her rescue, setting into motion their very hot — and very naked — love affair.

He takes her back to his place, where a headline reveals he's -- you guessed it — a criminal. But Britney doesn't seem to mind. She kisses him. He kisses her. They get it on, showing lots of skin and giving fans a sneak peek into their personal life.

They then head to a convenience store, where Britney decides to break loose and hold the place up, guns blazing. After the stickup, the pair steal a car and head back to Jason's loft for a very revealing shower scene that includes lingering shots on their wet, naked bodies.

As they wrap up the steamy shower session, the authorities close in on them, blasting bullets into the apartment. But Britney and Jason just continue to share passionate kisses as bullets soar around them John Woo-style.

Just when you think it's the end for pop's reigning Bonnie and Clyde, the police enter the apartment to see that the duo has escaped, unhurt, driving away on Jason's motorcycle. As the credits roll, everyone's left wondering what they will do next.

Shot in London in September, "Criminal" is the fourth single and video from Femme Fatale.

Look back when Britney teased the "Criminal" music video at the VMAs:

Seeser laser pico projector is always in focus, powered by Android

ESPlus Seeser
We've seen our fair share of pico projectors, so takes a bit to actually get us excited about one, but the Seeser from ESPlus is showing a lot of potential. Inside the tiny black box is a laser-based projection system which, unlike traditional lamps, doesn't need to be focused and can output a 25-lumen, 800 x 600 image up to 100-inches in size. There's an SD card slot around the side, which appears to be of the micro variety and it has an integrated 1seg tuner for pulling in broadcasts. All of this is powered by a 1GHz processor running Froyo -- so there's no actual need to hook up an external content source. Sadly it doesn't appear that it boasts access to the Android Market though, without a touchscreen, you wouldn't be able to make good use of the apps anyway. The Seeser should be available in Korea soon, but there's no word yet on how much it'll cost.

FEC filings: Valuable intel for 2012 (Politico)

The summer cash drive officially is in the books, and the results say a lot about who is up and who is down in the still-developing 2012 campaign landscape.

For some ? including Senate Democrats, a handful of House primary challengers and a cadre of women candidates ? the third fundraising quarter was a success story, bolstering their bids.

For others ? Senate GOP challengers and several veteran House incumbents ? the outcome was less promising.

Here?s what POLITICO learned from the third-quarter fundraising reports.

The supercommittee?s super raisers

If you?re on the deficit-cutting supercommittee, chances are you?re raising a lot of money.

At least three of the committee members ? GOP Reps. Jeb Hensarling of Texas, and Fred Upton and Dave Camp of Michigan ? raised more than $400,000 each over the past three months.

Camp was the big winner ? the House Ways and Means Committee chairman raked in more than $707,000.

For Upton, the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce committee, the cash will come in especially handy. Last year, he won just 57 percent of the vote in a GOP race against a little-known tea party foe, and ? depending on whether the supercommittee?s spending cuts anger conservatives ? he could find himself in a tough primary once again.

Whether Upton and Camp will be able to keep up the pace through the end of the year is uncertain. Both have said recently that they plan to scale back their fundraising efforts while the powerful supercommittee deliberates.

Incumbency begets consistency

With 33 seats in play, incumbent Democrats know that there will be less money from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to go around. They?re confronting this reality by stepping up their game. Of the six most vulnerable members facing competitive contests, five surpassed the million-dollar mark this quarter. Sens. Jon Tester, Claire McCaskill, Debbie Stabenow and Sherrod Brown each raised $1.2 million, while Florida Sen. Bill Nelson surged ahead of his class with a $1.9 million haul. This marks the third consecutive quarter that these five GOP targets have produced at least $1 million each in receipts. While none of them are shattering records, their grind-it-out approach is slowly and steadily yielding success.

The moneyed majority

Another heartening development for Senate Democrats: They are progressively extending their cash-on-hand leads in the marquee contests and in nonincumbent races. Particularly troubling to Republicans should be Florida and Missouri, where Nelson now has a class-leading $6.5 million advantage over his nearest rival, former Sen. George LeMieux; McCaskill has racked up a $2.5 million lead over Rep. Todd Akin. The fact that neither LeMieux nor Akin can be safely considered front-runners for their own party?s nominations means the GOP will have to play catch-up in two contests they view as pick-up opportunities. Back-to-back subpar performances by Rep. Denny Rehberg have helped Tester build a $1.2 million lead in Montana. Even Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, whose cash flow dropped by more than half this quarter, still enjoys a $1.5 million leg up over his nearest rival, state Attorney General Jon Bruning. Two Democratic candidates, Tim Kaine and Rep. Shelley Berkley, have tenuous edges.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Keshawn Martin scored twice in the third quarter on similar lunges to the end zone, and No. 23 Michigan State held off Denard Robinson and No. 11 Michigan 28-14 on Saturday for its fourth straight victory over the Wolverines.

The Spartans (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) equaled their longest winning streak over their in-state rivals.

Michigan (6-1, 2-1) lost for the first time under coach Brady Hoke. The Wolverines had a chance to tie it, but Robinson was sacked on fourth-and-1 from the Michigan State 9-yard line with 6:16 to play.

Robinson later threw an interception, and Isaiah Lewis returned it 39 yards for a touchdown with 4:31 left to make it 28-14. Shortly after that, Robinson was shaken up by a hit and left the game.

Edwin Baker ran for 167 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans.

Robinson ran for a first-quarter touchdown but was mostly ineffective through the air, going 9 for 24 for 123 yards and a touchdown on a windy day in East Lansing.

Down 21-7, Robinson found Roy Roundtree for a 34-yard touchdown with 9:49 left in the game. Martin then fumbled on an end around, giving Michigan the ball at the Michigan State 32.

After converting fourth-and-1 from the 23 with a short run, Robinson faced the same down and distance from the 9. Michigan called a slow-developing play-action attempt, and Johnny Adams sacked Robinson to end the drive.

After Michigan got the ball back, Robinson's pass was intercepted by Lewis, who took it back for a touchdown. Lewis risked a penalty by holding the ball out before crossing the goal line, but the touchdown stood.

Robinson's day ended a short while later when he was thrown down by Marcus Rush, who was called for roughing the passer. The Michigan quarterback stood on the sideline, grass stains all over his uniform, as the Spartans finished off another win over the Wolverines.

Michigan State hasn't had a four-game winning streak in the series since 1959-62 ? which was part of a 6-0-2 stretch against Michigan.

With the game tied at 7, Michigan State went on a 54-yard drive to start the third quarter. On third-and-goal from the 10, Kirk Cousins found Martin, who caught the ball at the 5 near the right sideline and managed to stay in bounds before extending the ball across the goal line while being knocked backward toward the end zone.

Martin caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cousins in the final minute of the third, dodging a tackler and diving to that same front corner of the end zone.

Michigan State entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense, and its defensive line gave Robinson problems all day.

Each team scored on its first possession of the game. Robinson gave Michigan a 7-0 lead with a 15-yard run, slipping away from Michigan State's Anthony Rashad White in the backfield and racing to the front corner of the end zone.

The Spartans answered with a 63-yard drive that ended with Baker's 1-yard scoring run.

The teams combined to punt four times from the defense's half of the field in the first half. One of those punts ? by Michigan ? came shortly after Devin Gardner had Stephen Hopkins open over the middle but threw incomplete toward the sideline instead.

Gardner went 3 of 7 for 45 yards for Michigan. He also came in after Robinson departed late in the fourth. With the Wolverines desperately trying to rally, Gardner had a touchdown pass called back because he was well past the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball.

On fourth-and-21 from the Michigan State 44, Gardner began running to the right sideline, then doubled back to the middle of the field, then circled back again to the same sideline before being stopped. Gardner had a receiver open deep down the field toward the end of the play but either couldn't see him or couldn't get rid of the ball.
