There are examples of antiseptics, eye washes and salves that contain Boric Acid. To give you an idea of how safe it is for humans, it has been compared to your standard table salt. Add to all these the fact that pest can't really develop a tolerance to it, and you'll see that you have a very powerful but all-natural pest control agent.

The Boric Acid is just one among a number of very effective natural pesticides. Garlic is another that can keep those pests away. Just plant them among your flowers or herbs and you have a natural pesticide that will do a great job while offering the additional benefits that you enjoy from it.

Do you have concerns about red spider mites destroying your tomatoes? No, don't use those dangerous chemicals. Just plant garlic around them and you've dealt with them permanently. Do you have fruit trees? You can deal with those pest with the garlic. Making a juice out of the garlic and spraying it on your sweet potato plants will keep those rabbits off.

Keep mosquitoes away by using it (garlic) around ponds or water gardens. Mix it with oil and apply it on yourself and you won't experience even one mosquito bite. Use garlic extract or oil and mix it with water along with red pepper and you will deal with caterpillars. Mix the garlic with Wormwood and you'll get rid of moths.

Lavender works great as a natural pesticide (Don't let the fact that it attracts butterflies fool you). You can easily get rid of moths, fleas, mice and ticks. You can easily protect yourself and pets from certain pests by applying Lavender oil. Keep your garage, garden or basement free from pests by throwing your used Lavender tea bags around those areas.

Spearmint and peppermint are also good pesticides. Just ensure that you take care with these as they can spread very easily. Dealing with cabbage worms or red spider mites is very easy with oil Geranium. Keep potato bugs away with Horseradish. Hyssop will keep your cabbages and grape arbors free from a good number of insects. Just make sure that you don't plant it near your radishes since they go well together.

Thyme and Oregano will help keep your cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, grape vines, arbors and cauliflower safe from pests. Your fruit trees will stay safe from ants, moths, flies, ants and fleas if you plant Tansy around them. You can also make a good pest repellant from it if you boil it into an extract and spray it (after mixing it with water).

If you have issues with snails, slugs and caterpillars, just plant wormwood around your garden. If you want to keep moles away from plants or buildings, just rub castor oil onto them. You can also use it as a spray by mixing it with soapy water or other oils. Just spray it around areas you want to keep those moles away. You can kill slugs by placing beer in dishes and spreading them around affected areas.

Hurricane Isaac storm surge tops levee in Plaquemines Parish

A storm surge from Hurricane Isaac topped a levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans early Wednesday, officials said, trapping those who chose not to evacuate.

Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser said the 18-mile, 8-foot-high levee--which is not part of the near $15 billion federal levee system constructed after Hurricane Katrina--was in the process of being raised.

"We knew we had a potential storm surge of nine to 12 feet--we had an eight foot levee," Nungresser said on CNN. "We're trying to get the few people who have stayed out. We've got a serious situation over there."

Isaac made landfall at 6:45 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, and the slow-moving Category 1 hurricane--now centered about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with maximum sustained winds topping 80 mph--is expected to dump as much as 20 inches of rain in several parts of Louisiana.

"Not only did we see the worst case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling," Nungresser said. "So the levees can only take so much."

Nungresser said there were reports of up to 12 feet of water in some homes. "This is something I've never seen before," Nungresser said. "And I rode out Katrina."

He said three parish residents, including a woman on a roof, were saved by a private boat. Rescue workers were waiting for conditions to improve--and skies to lighten--before attempting other rescues.

"We're working with U.S. Coast Guard to rescue people stranded on top of levee," Nungresser said at a press conference.

The southern end of the parish was under a mandatory evacuation order, though it's not clear how many residents followed it.

"There are homes inundated and some folks trapped by water in those homes," Guy Laigast, director of homeland security for Plaquemines Parish, told the Weather Channel.

"Over 150 people have had to be rescued from #Isaac flooding," CNN's Rob Marciano tweeted. "The majority were within mandatory evacuation zones."

According to News Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jesse Schaffer and his son have been rescuing stranded residents with their boat.

"We've rescued at least 23 people including children," Jesse Shaffer Jr. said.

The Army Corps of Engineers said the New Orleans levee protection system appeared to be working. Meanwhile, more than 500,000 customers were left without power in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies said. According to the Associated Press, most of the outages are in areas around New Orleans.

A tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.

Pfaff Automotive launched a campaign that asks people to register for a ?Tweet Race? by signing up for a new Twitter account or signing in with an existing one. Starting from Monday, when the campaign began, the first 10 people to reach 2,500 followers will win a key; one of those keys will unlock the door of a new 2013 Audi A4.

France offers to pick up tab for young hires

PARIS (AP) ? The French government wants companies to hire young people so much that it's offering to pick up the tab.

The new Socialist president, Francois Hollande, told his Cabinet Wednesday that he wants to wage a war on unemployment and unveiled a plan for the government to pay most of the salaries of tens of thousands of young people hired next year.

Unemployment in France is 10 percent, but nearly 23 percent for those under the age of 25. That's an imbalance that many European countries are struggling with: In Spain, youth unemployment is over 52 percent; it's 34 percent in Italy.

European employers are especially reluctant to hire young people because restrictive labor laws make it hard for companies to lay off employees. What's more, in France, young people are typically required to do a series of often unpaid internships before landing a full-time job or can only manage to get short-term contracts for years on end.

But few countries are approaching the problem in the way that France is. Italy and Spain have proposed modest tax breaks for companies that hire people just entering the workforce but have focused more on fundamental reforms of the labor market that they hope will address the root causes.

Under France's new plan, companies that hire a person between 16 and 25 for at least a year will only have to pay as little as 25 percent of the salary. The government hopes to create 100,000 of these "contracts for the future" next year and another 50,000 in 2014. It has promised to continue paying its share of the employee's salary for three years.

The government will give preference to young people hired from poor urban or rural areas that have been hit hardest by rising unemployment. Certain sectors will also be favored, such as medicine and digital or green technology.

"We are waging a battle for jobs," Hollande told Cabinet ministers, according to government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem. "It's the No. 1 challenge of our mandate."

Some economists were skeptical of the approach.

"Making the structures of the economy more competitive and better performing is what really has to drive the thinking (in countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece)," said Nicolas Veron, an economist affiliated with the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel and the Peterson Institute in Washington. "It's not about targeted programs; it's about the structure of the (labor) market."

Whereas countries like Spain and Italy have recently passed wide-ranging labor market reforms to regain waning investor confidence in their economies, France has so far been able to put off those kinds of tough decisions. Investor confidence in France has remained relatively strong in part because of the sheer size of the economy ? it is the eurozone's second-largest ? and also the fact that its neighbors are worse off. But experts warn France will eventually also have to face the need to reform its economy.

The proposal needs to make its way through Parliament, but Hollande's Socialist Party has a solid majority there and the issue was a major campaign promise.

Hollande has staked his credibility on driving down unemployment and encouraging growth, all while meeting strict budget deficit targets. It's unclear whether he can manage all three ? especially since the economy's fate is largely tied up with Europe's wider debt crisis and the well-being of its neighbors.

An entrepreneur's association immediately panned the idea.

"The jobs for the future are only a Band-Aid, if a necessary Band-Aid, in the face of a government that every day shows itself more incapable of overcoming the difficulties our country is confronted with," said Guillaume Cairou, president of the Club of Entrepreneurs and CEO of strategy consultancy DIDAXIS. "How can they not see that this cost is extremely high for the government, even while we should be reducing our deficit?"

The government estimates that the program will cost ?2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) next year; it did not detail costs for the following years.

Precise and persistent cell sabotage: Control of siRNA could aid regenerative medicine, cancer therapy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Some of the body's own genetic material, known as small interfering RNA (siRNA), can be packaged then unleashed as a precise and persistent technology to guide cell behavior, researchers at Case Western Reserve University report in the current issue of the journal, Acta Biomaterialia.

The research group, led by Eben Alsberg, associate professor in the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery, have been pursuing experiments that seek to catalyze stem cells to grow into, for example, bone and cartilage cells, instead of fat, smooth muscle and other cell types.

Beyond tissue engineering, the scientists believe that their technology could be used to starve a tumor by blocking growth of blood vessels that carry nutrition to a malignancy. Or the siRNA could bring on cancer cell death by interfering with other cellular processes.

siRNA is a short section of double-stranded RNA that inhibits gene expression. The molecule can jam up the machinery that produces specific proteins important to cell processes.

A current challenge to using siRNA to block growth of cancerous tumors or guide cell behavior in tissue engineering, is that the tiny material rapidly disperses when injected in the bloodstream or directly into target tissues.

Alsberg, Khanh Nguyen, a postdoctoral researcher, and Phuong N Dang a doctoral student here, packaged siRNA in a mix of polymeric materials. Under ultraviolet light, the mix is induced to form hydrogels connected by a network of polymer threads.

As the threads of the hydrogels break down, the siRNA molecules are cut loose to redirect the fate of the targeted cells. Ultimately, this system can be injected into a target tissue and application of light from outside the body will induce hydrogel formation.

"Local delivery helps target the siRNA to specific cell populations of interest, such as cancer cells in a tumor or stem cells in a bone fracture," Alsberg said. "The ability to alter cell behavior with siRNA can depend on the length of exposure time to the genetic material.

"We can tune the material properties so we can control the dose and rate at which cells are exposed to siRNA. This capacity may prove to be therapeutically valuable."

Tests showed the siRNA effectively interfered with a signal pathway of cells surrounding and inside the hydrogels over an extended period of time.

By adjusting the formula, essentially adding more hands that hold onto the siRNA in the hydrogel complex, the team increased the amount to time target cells are exposed to siRNA from a few days up to a few weeks, thus prolonging the sabotage of undesired cell development.

Alsberg has been awarded a $346,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health and a $1.15 million grant from the Department of Defense to test how well specially packaged siRNA can grow bone and cartilage from stem cells. His lab has already begun these experiments.
