San Francisco's Stunning New Transit Hub Is One Beautiful Slice of Future

Public transit doesn't have to be a total bummer if you've got a nice enough hub for it all to connect to. That seems to be the logic behind the upcoming 1.5-million-square-foot, San Francisco Transbay Transit Center. Some are calling it the city' "Grand Central," and if it lives up to the plans, it'll certainly be grand. More »

Web Hosting Reviews: Why You Need to Combine Your Web ...

If you run a web design business, then you probably know how the
industry is on demand. Many clients seek the services on a daily basis
owing to many opportunities available over the internet. Even so, you
need to consider combining your business with web hosting services.
Doing so will enable you to make a lot of profits, not to mention that it
can guarantee you constant clients. The reason this is so is because
most aspiring online clients are first concerned with setting up the
website, and not web hosting services. In fact, some of them are not
even aware that web hosting services facilitate the functionality of
their websites.

If therefore you offer website designing services plus web hosting services, you are better positioned to capture those clients that have not yet identified a web host. You can do this easily by mentioning to them about additional services needed for full functionality of their website. You will be surprised at how fast they are willing to embrace your web hosting services. The reason for this is simple - many people need a central place they can go to get full services regarding their websites. Within no time, you will find that a few more dollars are added to your account each month. If you manage to source for more clients, you will get a lot of returns.

To start you off though, you need to do the basics. This means that you need to get a reseller website hosting account. This account will enable you to host all your clients websites without interruption. While it costs you to acquire one, the benefits you get from it are appealing. For instance, you can easily get $50 per month from each of the website hosted in this account. As you grow in this industry, many clients are going to use your host. Therefore, the income realized will be much greater.

In order to get the best out of web hosting services though, you need to keep each client's site on separate pools. On the same line, ensure to assign different application settings to different sites, and keep them in different log files. This will reduce serial multiplication of a problem if one ever get busy, or develops any other problem. This also helps you to sort out the problem for your clients quickly.
The good thing about reseller web hosting account is the fact that it is cheap and reasonable. In fact, there are different packages tailored to suit your desires and abilities. For instance, if you have a small client base, there are packages that can be purchased at lower prices. Because of this, you stand no chance of making loses.

Another advantage of embracing reseller web hosting account is the fact that you do not have to undergo the billing stress, system support, hosting plans and such like problems. All you need is just purchase one of the reseller website hosting packages, and your bank account can start expanding each month.
Web design services are one of the most sought after services. But do not be limited to them alone, although you should not loose your focus either. What you should do is let your web design business market your web hosting services. After that, build a client base over time that will make an impact not only in your generation but even many more to come.

Eat Drink Better | Oklahoma Governor Signs Bill to Allow Horse ...

Neglected Horse

On Friday, Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin signed a bill to allow horse slaughter within the state.

House Bill 1999 prohibits the sale of horse meat for human consumption, but allows for the opening of horse slaughtering facilities in the state of Oklahoma. Forty-six other states already have laws allowing horse slaughter. Only Texas, California, and Illinois still have laws against horse slaughtering.

Horses in the U.S. are nearly always kept as pets, although there are some that work. Because they are not raised for meat, there are few limitations on the drugs that are given to the horses during their lives, even up to the moment of their deaths. Many of those drugs are dangerous for humans, rendering horse meat unfit for human consumption.

Currently, horses are purchased in the U.S. and shipped abroad for slaughtering. Supporters of horse slaughter in the U.S. claim that aging and unwanted horses will be abused if there are no slaughterhouses. In the statement from the governor?s office, Gov. Fallin said:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has also noted that over 166,000 horses were sent to Canada and Mexico for processing just in 2012. These animals traveled long distances, in potentially inhumane circumstances, only to meet their end in foreign processing plants that do not face the same level of regulation or scrutiny that American plants would.

Simply making the slaughter of horses legal in the state doesn?t mean a slaughterhouses will open there any time soon. USDA meat inspectors have to be on the premises for slaughter to be legal. With the recent sequester, the beef industry has lost 8% of their inspection days. I doubt they will want to share the limited inspectors with an industry that isn?t even popular here in the U.S.

Generate More Leads With These Search Engine Optimization Tips ...

Search engine optimization emphasizes keyword usage to increase relevancy rankings. You can make your site more visible to your target audience by utilizing popular keywords and phrases they tend to use in the website's content. This information can help decode some of the mystery that surrounds search engine algorithms and search engine optimization concepts.

Before beginning a website, research information about your keywords. You should focus on the correct keywords during website design and you should incorporate your keywords into your titles. Keyword research can let you know what people are searching for in your categories. These popular keywords are the ones you want to concentrate your optimization efforts on.

It can be helpful for the owner or boss of a company to be active in providing content like blogs for the company website. This method can serve the company as its voice, and people will be eager to hear it.

If you are trying to optimize your site to improve your search ranking, it's important to make sure that your site's code is clean and well written. If you have a confusing site with sloppy coding your site will be unable searchable by spiders. In addition, you won't be indexed if you have Flash included without a description written out.

Social media sites are absolutely necessary when you are working with SEO. Direct communication with your customers is always a positive thing, and programs like Facebook and Twitter will allow you to do exactly that.

Instead of writing in AP style, use SEO style to improve search engine optimization. In SEO style, you repeat your keywords as often as you can, as long as your article flow is not interrupted and your style remains unstilted. One reason using keywords will improve your rankings on search engines is that search engine spiders work by locating and weighting keywords.

Using link directories is a good way to get links to your website, though you need to make sure to have links that are high in quality and placed on legitimate sites. It's common for directories of low quality to be filled with derelict or badly done websites. Be sure that you know who you are affiliating with.

If you are aiming to better your effectiveness of search engine optimization, you should ensure you have a high-quality description tag to pull in the searchers to you. The content in this area shouldn't exceed 30 words. You should never go higher than 100 KB on the page.

If you want to maximize the impact of your SEO campaign, don't overlook your server headers. If you have inappropriate server headers, this might take quite a toll on your results. If your goal is to redirect, the server headers should be in "301 moved permanently" or "200 OK" status.

If you are aiming to better your effectiveness of search engine optimization, you should ensure you have a high-quality description tag to pull in the searchers to you. Keep the tag short. You should be able to describe your site in 30 words or less. Limit the size of this page to 100 KB or less.

Popular browsers offer free local listings, which can really help get your name out there. Services such as these will provide free publicity, which in turn will bring you more website visitors and exposure. Avoid dismissing free venues to use for publicity.

Strategically placing keywords within the main body of text on your website or blog is a great way to increase traffic coming from search engines. Avoid overloading keywords at the beginning of your passages. As a rule, you should aim to place the keyword twice within the opening paragraph. You should use a keyword whenever you can, without disrupting the flow of the content.

Joining local groups such as the Chamber of Commerce can not only give your business more credibility, but it can also boost your rankings in the search engines. They will link to your website and help with searches that are local. Additionally, people place more faith into your website if your rating from the Better Business Bureau is good.

If you do implement this strategy every time you publish a new page, you'll find that your search engine page rank increases. Make your meta description a strong message to customers, as it appears right under the hyperlink on many search engines. A vast majority of content management systems offer you the option of editing your meta description.

Ask questions before hiring an SEO company. Determine how knowledgeable the company is about your industry, what kind of SEO techniques they employ, when you can expect to see results and how much it will cost. Ask for references and proof that they have done good work in the past. Trustworthy companies will not have an issue with providing this information to you.

You might actually be able to get some traffic to your site while your site is ranked on the back pages, but your traffic would exponentially increase as soon as you started to implement the proper SEO tactics. By using the tips you've just read in this article, you can start to raise the profile of your website.

Pro-Cuomo lobby group NY's top spender in 2012

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The business group created to support Gov. Andrew Cuomo was again the state's top-spender among lobbyists in 2012 ? at more than $4 million ? twice the amount spent by Exxon Mobil Corp. as it tried to win favor for natural gas drilling in upstate New York, state records released Thursday show.

Overall, the Joint Commission on Public Ethics reported lobbying groups spent $205 million trying to influence state spending and legislation through lawmakers and the governor. That's a $15 million drop from 2011.

The Committee to Save New York ranked top spender, followed by Exxon Mobil, Major League Soccer, Albany's powerful teacher and public employee unions, and Wal-Mart Stores.

Reports filed with the commission show the Committee lobbied on the state budget, public worker pension changes sought by Cuomo to reduce government costs, and "gaming." The Committee received a $2 million donation from a gambling interest in late 2011, less than two months before Cuomo made expansion of casino gambling a centerpiece of his State of the State speech.

The Committee's 2012 report shows most of the $4 million it spent was on TV ads and production costs in the first six months of the year to promote Cuomo's initiative, including his budget proposals and jobs programs. No significant spending was reported after July by the group, which has legally shielded the identity of most of its earliest and biggest donors.

Committee to Save New York spokesman Michael McKeon said the group continues to operate. He wouldn't comment on any new lobbying plans.

"We don't discuss strategy in the media, but we have never been shy about letting you know about our plans at the appropriate time," McKeon said.

Exxon Mobil spent $2,106,132 on lobbying last year. Company spokesman Alan Jeffers said most of the money was spent on "public education advertising" with the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York and Friends of Natural Gas.

"We thought it was an important issue, but what happens in the future depends on what they propose," he said

The Cuomo administration is considering whether to allow gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Environmental groups strongly oppose fracking, saying the process threatens drinking water and public health.

"ExxonMobil can keep spending good money after bad, but our elected officials should continue listening to health experts, scientists and average New Yorkers, not out-of-state energy behemoths," said Alex Beauchamp of Food and Water Watch.

Major League Soccer spent $2,102,910 to lobby New York City and state officials to build a new pro soccer stadium, according to its filings with the commission. Giant retailer Wal-Mart Stores, based in Bentonville, Ark., spent $1.26 million to build its reputation among New York City officials, its filings show.

The United Federation of Teachers that operates in New York City spent $1.8 million lobbying state and city officials; the New York State United Teachers union, which operates statewide, spent $1.7 million.

Malaysia-based Genting New York, which operates the video slots and casino at Aqueduct race track, is expected to be interested in Cuomo's expansion of casinos statewide. Genting spent $1.27 million on lobbying last year.

Ten lobbying firms made more than $3 million on Albany in 2012. The Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker firm led them all with $10.3 million, followed by Patricia Lynch Associates at $6.7 million.

Can Bacteria Be Causing Colon Cancer? : Easy Health Options?

can-bacteria-be-causing-colon-cancer_300More than 100,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the United States every year. So, while March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, anytime is an important time to focus on improving your colon health.

We rarely think about the large intestine unless it causes discomfort. However, that doesn?t mean we should ignore it. We have many tools to support colon health and prevent colorectal cancer, and research shows we should take advantage of every one.

Risk Factors

There are a variety of well-known risk factors for colon cancer: family history, lifestyle and pre-existing conditions, such as Crohn?s disease.

Diet and exercise are the best ways to control your risk for colon cancer, as they are with many conditions. Your meals should be focused on lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Stay away from high glycemic index foods such as sugars and simple carbohydrates. A study of patients who had undergone colon cancer surgery found that those who controlled their glycemic index had longer disease-free survival rates. They send glucose into the bloodstream quickly and cause blood sugar to spike.

You should also increase your fiber intake. Dietary fiber can slow down changes in blood sugar.

As for exercise, it doesn?t take much to be effective. Just a 30-minute brisk walk each day can do wonders for your colon, as well as for your cardiovascular and overall health.

What Lives In The Microbiome

The digestive tract is home to billions of symbiotic bacteria that generally help with digestion and other functions. So now this area of the body is known as a ?microbiome? ? a habitat for tiny flora.

For many years, this was an understudied aspect of human health, but not anymore. Beneficial bacteria have been found to be involved in numerous areas of health beyond digestion. Researchers continue to find links between the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and long-term, chronic health problems.

For example, one 2012 study sheds light on how E. coli bacteria may play a role in cancer. Researchers at the University of Liverpool, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina, looked at an E. coli strain that carries PKS genes, genetic material that produces a DNA-destroying toxin. The scientists found much higher levels of this variety of E. coli in people with inflammatory bowel disease and in those with colon cancer. Further research found that laboratory animals harboring PKS-positive E. coli have a higher incidence of colon cancer.

Scientists believe that it is the DNA damage caused by these bacteria that produces cellular changes that cause cancer.

The idea that a form of bacteria might influence cancer development should come as no surprise. Healthy bacteria have been found to protect against cancer, heart disease and even mood disorders. Conversely, unhealthy varieties can promote disease, acutely or chronically.

This is why it is so important to support a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in our bodies. While the microscopic inhabitants of our microbiome watch out for our health, this cancer can?t be one-sided. You, as their host, must also look after them. A proper diet, along with targeted supplementation, is the best support.

The same researchers who discovered the potential relationship between PKS-positive E. coli and colon cancer had previously studied how different foods affect E. coli movement in the gut. For example, plantains and broccoli reduce the amount of bad bacteria being taken in by cells, while the fat emulsifiers found in processed foods increase the amount of E. coli being taken in.

Probiotics And Cleansing

One of the best ways to support the microbiome is through probiotic-rich supplements as well as cultured foods like yogurt and sauerkraut. By reintroducing healthy bacteria into the digestive tract, we boost immunity, improve nutrient absorption and generate a number of other significant health benefits.

We should also be taking active steps to regularly remove toxins. Springtime is an opportune season to engage in gentle, restorative cleanses to remove toxins from the digestive tract and body. One of my top recommendations for this is modified citrus pectin (MCP). It helps remove heavy metals and environmental toxins from the circulation and digestive system. MCP is also a powerful supplement for maintaining healthy inflammation responses as well as supporting immunity and cellular health.

In addition, an ancient Tibetan herbal formula has been shown in research to inhibit certain strains of pathogenic bacteria, including two forms of E. coli. This formula has also been extensively researched for its ability to support circulation and a healthy inflammation process.

While these are good tips for maintaining colon health, nothing is foolproof. That?s why I recommend getting screened for colon cancer. For those 50 or older, a colonoscopy can detect early colon cancer. Consult with your physician; if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you may want to be screened at an even younger age. Prevention efforts and effective early detection methods directed at cancer can potentially save lives.

Formula could help menopausal women combat bone loss, cardiovascular risk

Chevy Chase, MD For women enduring hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, a new model could better estimate the timing of the final menstrual period, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) developed a formula using the levels of two hormones to estimate when the final menstrual period would occur. The calculation relies on changing levels of estradiol, a hormone present in the ovary, and follicle stimulating hormone, a hormone in the brain that gives instructions to the ovary. As women go through menopause, follicle stimulating hormone levels rise and estradiol levels dip.

Currently, physicians monitor bleeding patterns to determine the menopause transition stage. However, the menopause transition stage is a very imprecise predictor of when the final menstrual period will take place. More than 60 percent of women who are classified as early perimenopausal meaning that their periods are less predictable but they have no big gaps in cycles become postmenopausal without any additional clinical bleeding signal.

"We need a better way to answer women's questions about when to expect the final menstrual period." said lead author Gail Greendale, M.D., of UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. "If further research bears out our approach, it could be the first step to developing web-based calculators and other tools women can use to estimate where they are in the menopause transition and how far away their final period is."

The researchers analyzed longitudinal data from 554 women taking part in the National Institutes of Health's Study of Women's Health Across the Nation to develop the model.

Being able to predict the final menstrual period could have broader implications for women's health, Greendale said. In the year leading up to the final menstrual period, women face accelerated bone loss and increased cardiovascular risk.

"For example, some researchers have proposed that an intervention begun one or two years before the final menstrual period would greatly decrease future fracture risk by preventing the very rapid bone loss that occurs in the few years before and few years after the final menses," Greendale said. "But before ideas such as this can be tested, we need to accurately predict where a woman is in her timeline to menopause."

###

Other researchers working on the study include: S. Ishii of the University of Tokyo, and M. Huang and A. Karlamangla of UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.

The article, "Predicting the Timeline to the Final Menstrual Period: the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation," appears in the April 2013 issue of JCEM.

Project Seeks To Bring Extinct Species Back

Copyright ? 2013 NPR. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

JOHN DANKOSKY, HOST:

This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm John Dankosky. It sounds like something from a science fiction movie, researchers using cutting-edge biotech methods to bring an extinct species back to life. As a matter of fact, I think I saw that one. It was called "Jurassic Park."

At a recent symposium in Washington, one team of researchers reported that they'd partial success resurrecting the genome of an extinct species of frog, last seen in Australia in the mid-1980s. Joining me now to talk about the frog effort, called the Lazarus Project, is the head of the team. Michael Archer is professor in the Evolution of Earth and Life Systems Research Group, part of the School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He joins me by phone, where it's very early Saturday morning there. So welcome, and thanks for joining us on SCIENCE FRIDAY.

MICHAEL ARCHER: Good morning, John. I should say good afternoon to you.

DANKOSKY: Thank you. So how far have you gotten on this project? Do you have a frog yet?

ARCHER: You know, we're much further than we ever thought we would be, and I think probably we're much further than we ever had a right to expect to be. But we don't have the frog yet. What we have is the DNA back and reproducing, and we have it building cells, and it's building even embryos. Now, this is being - it's been a long project, partly because we've been dependent on a host frog, you know, for eggs, and this thing only reproduces over a short period once a year. So we get one little crack at it, and then we have to go cool our heels for a while, and this has been going on. We've only spent about a month and a half. But at this point, this embryo is our next challenge, is to get this embryo to continue to go one to develop a tadpole. So it's one little speed bump after another, but we're knocking them over as we come to them.

DANKOSKY: So why this particular frog?

ARCHER: Yeah, that's a very good question. Well, two good reasons - well, maybe even three. The first one is it represents a whole family of frogs that's gone from the world, and we're all interested in trying to conserve as much of the global genome as we can. That gives the world resilience. That secures even ourselves. So we'd love to have this frog back if we could, because it's so distinctive.

Second reason is, well, it's - medically - a fascinating frog. It's not a normal frog. A normal frog lays its eggs in the water and, you know, they get fertilized, and it wishes them well and then goes off and eats bugs for the rest of its year. This frog didn't do that. This frog was very maternally focused. It swallowed, curiously, the fertilized eggs, and then took them into the stomach.

Now, normally, that's where the food's going to be digested, but somehow this frog shut down all the normal processes that a stomach goes through and turn the stomach, in effect, into a uterus. And there, these fertilized eggs went on to turn into tadpoles in the stomach, and then the tadpoles metamorphosed and became frogs in the stomach. And as they did this, they were getting bigger and bigger, and the poor old female frog is sort of swelling up like a blown-up balloon, eventually can't stand it anymore, has a big hiccup, and out comes a huge spray of little frogs.

(LAUGHTER)

ARCHER: And the first biologist who saw this, of course, were just agog. They've never seen any frog - they've never seen any animal, let alone any frog, ever change its bodily organs like this.

So there are all kinds of reasons why we'd love to have this frog back, but that third one that was going to mention is that it's extinct because of us. And I think this goes to this heart of a moral obligation issue. If we're the reason that this big chunk of the global genome and this interesting animal is gone, then I think we've got a moral responsibility, if not a moral imperative to see what we can do to bring it back.

DANKOSKY: Well, and look, we'll get into the morality of all this in just a moment. But as you describe this unusual frog, I guess part of me is wondering, maybe it's just a very inefficient frog. I mean, a frog that lays its babies through its mouth, is it all our fault that this frog went extinct in the first place?

ARCHER: We think it is. One of the things that's been knocking frogs all around the world and has amphibian biologists and everybody else who loves frogs scared to death is something called the chytrid fungus. This fungus is a very nasty bit of work. It is responsible for taking out huge number of species on all the different continents. The problem is it appears it's likely humans are spreading this fungus. We're walking and intruding into pristine environments everywhere around the world and on our clothes, on our boots are probably coming spores of this fungus being shifted around, using us like taxis to find new victims everywhere.

So we're complicit. If this is - and it probably is this because many of the frogs around the world that are disappearing are disappearing from pristine environments. There's no other explanation for why they're going. So we're pretty sure that's what nailed this frog as well. So yeah, we feel a bit guilty about this.

DANKOSKY: So what do you think about re-introducing an extinct species? You can call us: 1-800-989-TALK. That's 1-800-989-8255. I'm sure some of our listeners are probably thinking, is this a really good idea? They did see "Jurassic Park." They wonder, you know, if something's extinct, maybe there's a reason why. Should we really be getting this frog back into the population here?

ARCHER: Yeah, I can understand that view. "Jurassic Park" has had that impact. And, in fact, when you think about that book, Michael Crichton wrote that book specifically to scare people to death about never trying this. I think it was a dismal failure 'cause every kid I know was really excited by that movie and would love to see it happen. But it's not a Velociraptor we're trying to bring back, although remember, of course, dinosaurs are not extinct. We don't have to bring them back. We live with them. There are birds.

Some people have budgie-saurs(ph) as pets, and others go out and gobble up a Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch. We have dinosaurs all around us. So it's really a different kind of an animal and it's not - we're not reaching that far back. Most of these projects that the Revive and Restore group and National Geographic had been focused on in this event are species that have been recently extinct, and many of these are species that we drove extinct.

My - one of my other interests is trying to get the Australian Thylacine back. That was our continent's king of beasts, and we shot every one of those things to death. So we have a big scorecard here to settle on, I'm afraid.

DANKOSKY: But as you re-introduce species that have been gone for some time, even 30 years, what does it do to the rest of the ecosystem? As we've talked about elsewhere in our program, you know, an awful lot can change evolutionarily in just a few years. So what's the, you know, the downstream consequence here if you put this frog back into the world?

ARCHER: Yeah, that is such an important question, and every one of us involved in projects of this kind around the world have that question right up in our mind. In fact, it often influences your choice about which animal you're going to try to see if you can rescue. And in the case of, for example, the Thylacine, it's an interesting challenge. The Thylacine is an animal we exterminated from Tasmania, that little island south of Australia. I think because that happened, it's possibly going to cause the extinction of one of our other precious animals, the Tasmanian devil.

This is an animal that has a communicable cancer. Dogs have something like that as well. The devil is the only other one. So if devil can meet devil, they can pass this wretched disease on. Now, the Thylacine, when it was in Tasmania, competed with the devil, and you had a balanced system. And if that disease ever popped up in the devil populations, it burned itself out because not all of those devils could come - could contact each other.

If we could get the Thylacine back, put that king of beasts back in the throne, which is still warm and waiting, it would suppress the number of devils, keep them at a manageable level and the disease would burn itself out wherever it started. So getting these ecosystems back by putting in key species can be critical to maintaining the stability of them. You think about Yellowstone National Park. We're all aware of the fact that things started to go terribly wrong when wolves were destroyed from Yellowstone.

The herbivores, the plant eaters began to increase in numbers. They overrate the plants. Their river systems began to degrade 'cause there weren't trees along the edge to protect them. When they get the wolves back, the whole thing starts to fall back into a natural rhythm. So this is driving us, importantly. We do need to know that we could put these animals back and that it would improve the world, not in any way diminish it.

DANKOSKY: Let's go to the phones. Nathan is in San Francisco. Hi, Nathan.

NATHAN: Hi there. Thanks so much for taking my call.

DANKOSKY: Yeah.

NATHAN: My question is around why we sort of feel a moral obligation to bring species back when species go extinct all the time at the hands of other species. So I guess it's sort why we feel the moral obligation as opposed to seeing it as a sort of natural part of evolution.

ARCHER: I think the answer, Nathan, is pretty simple. You're right, of course. There's nothing immoral or dreadful intrinsically about extinction. In fact, if extinction didn't occur, life wouldn't be able to change in the way that it needs to to adapt to a changing world. It's been going on for three and a half billion years. The problem is, you need new species to originate at about the same rate to offset the ones that are going extinct so that you maintain a balance of the amount of biological diversity in the world.

And that's what's not happening now. You'll hear people talk about the fact that we seem to be now launching into the world's sixth great extinction or mass extinction event where the number of things going extinct is vastly exceeding the number that are appearing. So we're losing - we're net losing species in the world. And as life plunges off this cliff, we have to say, are we the reason that this whole massive global imbalance is starting to happen? And if so, do we want to live with the consequences?

In the previous five mass extinctions on Earth, it took about 10 million years for ecosystems to be balanced again after those dreadful events. Like the meteor when it came at the end of the Cretaceous and took out the dinosaurs. We're kind of doing the same thing now. So the view I have that this is a moral obligation to try to stop this if we can is based on the fact that I want to live in a world that basically has its biological components collapsing. We need those things in the world.

DANKOSKY: So working through your method there, how many different attempts would you need to be successful to really actually rebuild a species? 'Cause if you just have a bunch of frogs that are cloned off of the same frogs, you don't have a whole lot of diversity within the species. It's not like frogs really were back before they were - became extinct in the first place, if you get my meaning.

ARCHER: Yeah, I do. And fortunately, when I went to the chap who had last kept these frogs - this is Professor Mike Tyler at the University of Adelaide - he had not just kept tissues of one frog, he had a whole bucket full of tissues of many frogs, so we know we've got, you know, male, female tissue. But technology is getting so good now. Many of these questions that we have presumed to be important - i.e., we have to have hundreds of different kinds of, or different individuals to have a viable population, it's not clearly the case that that's necessary anymore.

Sometimes genetic variation could be engineered. Sometimes it will pop up itself even in a population that is very little. The cheetah, for example, really every cheetah is a clone of every other cheetah and yet they're doing fine. There's not much genetic variation there at all.

And we do know that you can, in fact, do letter by letter gene replacement therapies now - these are all new - where you can introduce variation into populations that wasn't there. You can swap one little piece of DNA for another. This is a new world and it's so exciting because it offers the potential to increase the viability of the natural world in a way that we've never been able to do before.

DANKOSKY: I'm John Dankosky, and this is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR.

So what about some of the species that are icons of modern extinctions, things like the passenger pigeon? Could you bring that back?

ARCHER: Yeah. It's very interesting to see that, revive and restore. And Ben Novak are working very hard on that. George Church is working as well. One of the good things, you know, that happened in this meeting were all of us came out of our closets and admitted what we were trying to do, was that we met each other. And as a result of this meeting organized by these organizations, a lot of new collaborations developed. So I already know that there are three or four different groups combining their efforts together to try to get that passenger pigeon back. The same thing is happening with the mammoth.

In the case of our gastric-brooding frog, we've teamed up with Advanced Cell Technology, Bob Lancer. who's a brilliant cloner of mammals. So I think we're going to suddenly see an acceleration in these projects. Many interesting animals that have been the target of de-extinction events are going to accelerate their path back into the world. That's what I hope, anyway.

DANKOSKY: Shannon is on the phone in Haymarket, Virginia. Hi there, Shannon.

SHANNON: Hello. How are you?

DANKOSKY: Doing well. What's on your mind?

SHANNON: I'm curious - you brought up the morality issue, and I'm curious if you're getting any kind of pushback from either the scientific community or anywhere else, and to see whether or not this is wise and what will happen if people who don't necessarily have the appropriate tools to do the right kind of research - or maybe even just the appropriate intentions in mind get a hold of this kind of technology. And is anyone worried that you're going to take it too far?

ARCHER: Yeah. Shannon, that's very interesting and a very good question, and it is something we're all thinking about. But the first answer to your question, are we getting pushback? Not a lot. We're getting exactly the kind of question you've asked, which is informed concern about - everybody wants to know that these issues are being talk about.

But in this particular case, one of the most curious objections or concerns I heard expressed comes from conservationists themselves. They're little worried that we actually may succeed. And they're worried because if we do, they're going to say, well, why are people going to bother to do standard conservation projects anymore? If you can haul an animal back up the cliff after it's fallen off and gone extinct, why waste all this energy trying to conserve them now?

And there are lot of reasons why this is - while a good worry, not one that we really do have to worry about. In the first place, we haven't done it yet, so, you know, we all have our fingers crossed and we're working hard.

Second place, it's actually cheaper and easier to look after endangered species today than to try to pull them back up the cliff again afterwards. The third reason, which I think is most important, is the technology that we're developing to try to bring an extinct animal back always involves trying to take your DNA from the extinct animal and put it into the cell of a completely different species because the species you want isn't here any more.

So this is very different than Dolly cloning, when they took the nucleus from a live sheep body cell and put it into the egg of a live sheep. This is a much more challenging issue. But if we succeed, then those endangered animals that we're all concerned about seeing disappear off that cliff and their numbers are reducing, we can use that technology if we can refine it to take the endangered species DNA, put it into the egg of a common species - a different one - and use the common species to increase the numbers of the endangered species.

DANKOSKY: Actually build up a population that's in decline.

ARCHER: Exactly. So I see this as another tool that conservationist actually need and will probably embrace to assist all of the projects, all of the efforts globally to keep as many species in the world as we can.

DANKOSKY: Well, thank you very much for getting up early to talk about this bizarre and interesting experiment. Thank you so much, Michael Archer.

ARCHER: It was a pleasure, John, and thank you to your listeners for asking those very intelligent questions.

DANKOSKY: Michael Archer is a professor in the Evolution of Earth and Life Systems Research Group, part of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

HTC gives update on HTC One delays, availability

HTC One

North America will get the HTC One by the end of April, company says

HTC has just released a statement regarding availability for the HTC One, which has seen delays because of supply shortages. As you'd expect, the company is spinning things in a positive light, and promises that we'll see some general availability in Europe Next week, and North American and Asia by the end of April.

Here's the full statement:

“HTC has seen unprecedented demand for and interest in the new HTC One, and the care taken to design and build it is evidenced in early reviews. The new HTC One will roll out in the UK, Germany and Taiwan next week and across Europe, North America and most of Asia-Pacific before the end of April. We appreciate our customers’ patience, and believe that once they have the phone in their hands they will agree that it has been worth the wait.”

So the UK, Germany and Taiwan next week, North America and Asia-Pacific by the end of April. Our usual MO is to tell you that a few weeks isn't that long to wait. But after getting to use the HTC One for a couple weeks now, we can't say that with a straight face.

Any delay should be particularly distressing for HTC, which has struggled financially for a number of quarters, as competitor Samsung prepares what should be another high-profile (and high-budget) launch with the Galaxy S4. We put the two phones up against each other last week in New York City, and it's going to be a tough call for many folks.

Ford's Euro-legal 1.0-liter EcoBoost racer is faster around the 'Ring ...

Whoa Nelly! Ford has done it again and built another great car we?ll probably never see in the U.S.

It?s called the FF1. It?s powered by the 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine and it?s street legal ? well, at least in Europe.

Ford aims to officially unveil this one-seater Ariel Atom rival at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, according to MotorAuthority.

The version Ford will sell the European public will have 123 horsepower. Ford has a 202 horsepower version it?s been testing though. This highly tuned FF1 will round the Nurburgring in seven minutes and 22 seconds. That?s faster than the Pagani Zonda and the Ferrari Enzo.

Try not to get too excited, though. The FF1 doesn?t meet U.S. airbag safety standards, as it has none. So it?s unlikely the little track day car will make it Stateside, unless sold exclusively for the track like the Mustang Cobra Jet.

We?d love to see it in North America, though. Ford says if drivers can keep their foot out of the throttle, the FF1 is capable of 80 miles-per-gallon, which would make it green car by anyone?s standards.

We?re disappointed Ford has no U.S. plans for the little FF1. With the new ?One Ford? global mission, we figured the days of European-only performance models were over.

Check back closer to Goodwood?s July kick-off for info on the FF1 and more. Here?s a photo we snapped at Ford?s CES display in January:

How to Use a Gamepad for Any iOS Game (Not Just Emulators)

How to Use a Gamepad for Any iOS Game (Not Just Emulators)How to Use a Gamepad for Any iOS Game (Not Just Emulators) The iPhone and iPad are fantastic gaming devices, but unfortunately a lot of games still try to emulate gamepads with onscreen buttons on the touch screen and it just doesn't work that well. Thankfully, a jailbreak app called Blutrol lets you turn a handful of different gamepads into controllers for any game with touchscreen buttons. Here's how to set it up.

We've talked about turning your Android or iOS device into a portable retro game arcade before, and while you can still use those tricks, this method makes it so you can use a bunch of different controllers for any game on iOS, not just emulators and the handful of games that support controllers (for Android users check out our guide to turning your Android device into a awesome portable game center). While it might sound a little fishy, it works incredibly well and isn't that hard to set up.

What You'll Need

You don't need much to make this work, just a single app, some games, and little patience:

  • A jailbroken iPad, iPhone, or iPad Touch.
  • Blutrol ($6.99) from the BigBoss Repository on Cydia.
  • A PS3 Dualshock controller (note: you also need the SixPair tool for Mac or the SixaxisPairTool for Windows to pair the PS3 controller with your iOS device), Bluetooth Keyboard, Wiimote, Phonejoy, iCade, iControlPad, or iMpulse controller.

That's it. Now we just need to get your controller paired up with your device and working with your games.

Pair You Gamepad with Your iOS Device

First things first, we need to get the gamepad paired with your iOS device. We'll be using a PS3 controller, which takes an extra step. So, if you're using a different gamepad, skip this part.

How to Setup a PS3 Controller

How to Use a Gamepad for Any iOS Game (Not Just Emulators)The PS3 controller takes one additional step to get it working with your iOS device, but it's not complicated, and you only have to do it once. When you're done, your controller is paired with your iOS device every time.

On Windows

  1. Download and run SixaxisPairTool.
  2. Connect your iOS device to your computer with the lightning cable or 30-pin cable.
  3. Connect your PS3 controller to your computer with a USB cable and wait for the Bluetooth address to come up.
  4. Once it's paired with your computer, get your iOS device's Bluetooth address by heading into Settings > About > Bluetooth. Enter that address into SixaxisPairTool and click update. Now your iOS device should be linked to your PS3 controller.

On Mac

  1. Download SixPair Tool and run the app.
  2. Connect your iOS device to your computer with the lightning cable or 30-pin cable.
  3. Connect your PS3 controller to your Mac with a USB cable.
  4. Click the "Pair Controller to iPad" button.
  5. When it's successful, open Blutrol on your iOS device, tap the controller tab, select the PS3 controller, and tap "Connect." When it's connected, you can disconnect the PS3 controller from your Mac.

Now you can select your PS3 controller inside Blutrol as a Bluetooth device (if it doesn't appear right away, head into Settings > BTStack and select "BTStack" as the active Bluetooth system).

Pair Other Controller to Your iOS Device

Thankfully, other controllers don't take the extra step that a PS3 controller does. For the rest of the supported devices, just follow the directions for pairing that are included with the device (or just head into Settings > General > Bluetooth and make sure they're already recognized). Then open the Blutrol app, tap "Controller" and select your gamepad.

Set Up Blutrol for Any Game

How to Use a Gamepad for Any iOS Game (Not Just Emulators)Now that your iOS and gamepad are paired up together it's time to start playing games. Thankfully, this part's easy too, and you only have to do this once for each game.

  1. Open up the game you want to use the controller for (obviously it makes the most sense to pick a game with onscreen buttons. We'll be using Sonic CD).
  2. Take a screenshot of the game when the controls are displayed (tap the home button and power button at the same time).
  3. Exit the game and open up Blutrol.
  4. Tap the "Games" tab, and then the "+" sign.
  5. Select the game you just took a screenshot of.
  6. Tap either portrait or landscape (depending on how you took the screenshot), and select the screenshot you just took.
  7. Tap "Add," select the controller of your choice, and then tap either landscape or portrait.
  8. You'll now see your screenshot with your gamepad's buttons laid over it. Here, you're essentially assigning a button combination, so when you push a button on the controller, it "taps" the screen for you. Move the gamepad buttons to cover up the on-screen controls however you like (you can also resize the analog stick or d-pad with pinch and zoom). When you're happy with the setup, tap "done."
  9. Now open up the game again, and start playing the game with the controller (if it has trouble, just force-quit the game and start over).

That's it! From now on you'll be able to easily pair your controller with your iOS device and start playing games. Just don't tell any of your friends on the leaderboards why you're doing so well. It also works with any app you want (not just games), so you might be able to come up with some other creative uses.

Hashtags Will Be Great for Facebook

In an attempt to continue its quest to become everyone's hyper-organized "personal newspaper,"?Facebook is planning to adopt a modern organizing tool that's as easy for its native Twitter users to make fun of as it may prove useful to the often cluttered No. 1 social network. "It is unclear how far along Facebook's work on the hashtag is and the feature isn't being introduced imminently,"?sources tell? The Wall Street Journal's Evelyn M. Rusli and Shira Ovide.

RELATED: Your Instagram Feed Is Ready for Real Computers Now

So that's one reason for the Twitterati to calm down, and here's another: This could actually be a good thing for Facebook, especially it's new ? and still confusing ? third pillar, Graph Search. Hashtags may be ever-present enough to be lame, but that simple # sign is still a ubiquitous way for curious people to search for a conversation, and this particular form of communication has rightfully passed the boundaries of the place where it was it invented. Think about it: Wouldn't it be cool to filter a Facebook Graph Search with a query like "people near Washington, D.C. talking about #CPAC"? And isn't that kind of what Mark Zuckerberg was getting at when he launched Graph Search? He said that part of Facebook's mission was to "give people tools" to "make the world more open" ? that the purpose of the personalized search engine wasn't to "let people search the web" so much as "help people search the social graph," and that "that graph is huge." Consider the hashtag a way to strip away clutter from the hugeness of the information online. Consider the hashtag again.

RELATED: Facebook Shrugs Off Instagram's New Class Action Lawsuit

Plus, Facebook hashtags will help with news discovery in and around the other two main parts of Facebook's user experience: upgraded versions of?News Feed?and now Timeline. Right now, much to the chagrin of news makers like The New York Times's Nick Bilton, Facebook's EdgeRank algorithm decides what we get to see, and how we see it, unless we do a lot of digging. But incorporating the hashtag ? a simple organizer that pretty much everyone knows how to use by now, and kind of gets annoying when it's double posted to Facebook but doesn't do anything ? will help the whole news discovery process. If an algorithm doesn't surface talk about a topic, a hashtag certainly might.

RELATED: Instagram Was Mark Zuckerberg's Last Hurrah as Facebook's Hacker King

Of course, people have already started hating on the idea, pointing to the annoying inside-joke usage of the term. (We are talking about the overused word of the year from last?year, after all.)?But as much as the abuse of hashtags may turn off Twitter users, especially the nearly 10,000 people in the "This is not Twitter. Hashtags don't work here." Facebook group, there's no turning back now: Hashtags are all over Instagram, and now that its parent company is jumping in the pool, well, may be we should have seen this coming.

The Bergoglios react to having a pope in the family

Many were shocked by the election of the first Latin American pope, including his family.

Pope Francis? sister, Mar?a Elena Bergoglio, who resides in Ituzaingo, a suburb of Buenos Aires, said she felt speechless and blessed upon hearing the announcement.

?I watched the announcement with an absolute calm,? Mar?a Elena?told La Nacion in her native Spanish. ?I was convinced that it wasn?t going to be my brother, and when it was announced, it was surprising, there are no words. It?s something that floored me.?

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio into a humble family of five children in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. His parents were Italian immigrants ? his father, Jos? Mario Francisco Bergoglio, was a railway worker, and his mother, a housewife. ?A nephew of the pope, Jos? Luis Bergoglio, is also a Jesuit priest.

His sister also said, from what she knew, he didn?t even want to be pope, because he loved Buenos Aires.

?There are no words, from a faith standpoint, even less,? said the pope?s sister. ?It?s something you feel within. Having a brother as pope is a blessing of God.?

Her son, Jos? Bergoglio, nephew of the pope, told la Nacion, ?I was at work monitoring the conclave on the internet, and when they said it was him, I had to sit down. I couldn?t believe it ? it was total shock.?

His nephew also expressed that he can?t help but feel mixed emotions, because although he is excited for his uncle, he will miss seeing him often.

Juan Fern?ndez Xifra, son of a female cousin of the pope, told Radio Sudamericana that when he heard the news, he called his mother and they cried together on the phone.

?The bond we have with him is strong,? says Fern?ndez Xifra of his relative, who he calls completely transparent and accessible. ?He married me and baptized my daughter. It?s an incredible feeling. He?s someone of the people, with enormous heart, grounded and very humble.?

Known for keeping a low profile in his career as a teacher, and then auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio used to spend a lot of his time counseling priests, preaching and hearing confessions. He was?even known for answering the phone himself?- as he found no need for a secretary.

While standing on the balcony of St. Peter?s Basilica after his election in the Vatican yesterday, he asked for prayers for himself and for the retiring Pope Benedict XVI ? asking for brotherhood for his new family, ?the whole world.?

?And now let us begin this journey, the Bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome which presides in charity over all the Churches, a journey of brotherhood in love, of mutual trust,? said the new pope. ?Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world that there might be a great sense of brotherhood.?
