With nine games on Saturday night, this is going to be the biggest ?What we learned? recap of the preseason. So let?s get to it.

Bills 35, Jaguars 32

1. Jaguars quarterback David Garrard didn?t have a great preseason, but rookie Blaine Gabbert didn?t do anything to put Garrard?s job in jeopardy. ?For now.

2. Buffalo?s starters outplayed Jacksonville?s starters. Ryan Fitzpatrick was very sharp (11-for-12, 165 yards and two scores) while racking up 17 first half points.

3. Bills running back Fred Jackson started and showed why he should remain the starter for Week One. ?We?d be shocked if C.J. Spiller played more than Jackson early in the year.

4. With Donald Jones out, Bills receiver Marcus Easley made a strong big for significant playing time.

Steelers 34, Falcons 16

1. Matt Ryan threw 42 passes in the first half, although he wasn?t overly efficient.

2. Pittsburgh?s starters could not be stopped, but injuries to quarterback Byron Leftwich and center Maurkice Pouncey overshadowed things. ?Leftwich could miss the season with a broken left arm.

3. Emmanuel Sanders remains out, which has given Steelers receiver Antonio Brown a chance to shine.

Lions 34, Patriots 10

1. Detroit?s defensive front?absolutely mauled New England, forcing Tom Brady to make some ugly throws.

2. Matthew Stafford wins our preseason MVP award after a virtually flawless performance. He can make any throw.

3. Patriots receiver?Wes Welker says?he?s ?OK? after leaving with a neck injury. The Patriots lost guard Dan Connolly in the game.

Bucs 17, Dolphins 13

1. There was a lot more good than bad from Chad Henne in his second straight solid performance.

2. Brandon Marshall is starting to look like he did in Denver. He made a couple great moves after the catch on long plays Saturday night. One resulted in a long score. The other resulted in a fumble.

3. Josh Freeman and the Bucs offense have quietly looked sluggish this month. The backup running back situation isn?t pretty.

4. Kellen Winslow left with an ankle injury.

5. Reggie Bush finished with -1 yard on five carries. He had 23 yards receiving. Rookie Daniel Thomas, who hasn?t looked great in camp, continued to struggle.

Cowboys 23, Vikings 17

1. The Cowboys held out center Andre Gurode, a precursor to a possible trade or release.

2. Dallas? first-team defense continued to struggle. ?They have given up 30 points in nine preseason possessions.

3. On the flip side, Donovan McNabb?s deep score to Bernard Berrian was another positive sign for Minnesota?s steadily improving starting offense.

4. Dez Bryant has enjoyed a quiet camp off the field, and he made noise on the field with five catches and 67 yards.

Texans 30, 49ers 7

1. Arian Foster aggravated his hamstring injury, but the Texans are remaining positive.

2. The only points San Francisco scored came on a turnover. ?The offense, playing without Frank Gore Saturday, has endured an abysmal preseason. Alex Smith remains the starting quarterback.

3. Even if Foster is limited early in the year, the Texans are in good shape. Second-year pro Ben Tate has been a revelation the last two weeks.

Titans 14, Bears 13

1. Chris Johnson got a little more leverage when Tennessee?s first-team offense struggled. Chicago has 16 first downs to only 7 for the Titans in the first half.

2. Chicago lost tight end Desmond Clark and running back Marion Barber to injuries.

3. Johnny Knox outplayed Roy Williams once again. ?Chicago?s starters on offense looked sharp for the most part.

4. It appears Chester Taylor is on his way out of town unless Barber?s injury is serious.

Broncos 23, Seahawks 20

1. Kyle Orton looked terrific, while Tim Tebow had a mixed day while taking all the second team offense snaps. ?It remains unclear if Tebow or Brady Quinn will be the backup.

2. The Seahawks quarterback competition doesn?t seem to be a competition at all. Tarvaris Jackson played into the fourth quarter, struggling again. ?Seattle?s offensive line has looked awful in the preseason.

3. Von Miller continues to look like the real deal. ?Combining him with Elvis Dumervil makes the Broncos defense a lot more dangerous.

Chargers 34, Cardinals 31

1. Arizona?s offense looked rather explosive. They enjoyed an 80-yard touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald, a 34-yard score by Andre Roberts (running), and Beanie Wells had a nice night.

2. Cardinals first-round pick Patrick Peterson was picked on by Philip Rivers, but only after Peterson recorded a pick six.

3. Peterson will need to step up because starter Greg Toler left with a potentially serious knee injury.

4. San Diego?s starting defense had a poor night, but first round pick Corey Liuget is living up to his name.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Astronauts may need to take the unprecedented step of temporarily abandoning the International Space Station if last week's Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying there this fall.

Until officials figure out what went wrong with Russia's essential Soyuz rockets, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents have to leave in mid-November.

The unsettling predicament comes just weeks after NASA's final space shuttle flight.

"We have plenty of options," NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini, assured reporters Monday. "We'll focus on crew safety as we always do."

Abandoning the space station, even for a short period, would be an unpleasant last resort for the world's five space agencies that have spent decades working on the project. Astronauts have been living aboard the space station since 2000, and the goal is to keep it going until 2020.

Suffredini said flight controllers could keep a deserted space station operating indefinitely, as long as all major systems are working properly. The risk to the station goes up, however, if no one is on board to fix equipment breakdowns.

Six astronauts from three countries presently are living on the orbiting complex. Three are due to leave next month; the other three are supposed to check out in mid-November. They can't stay any longer because of spacecraft and landing restrictions.

The Sept. 22 launch of the very next crew ? the first to fly in this post-shuttle era ? already has been delayed indefinitely. Russia's Soyuz spacecraft have been the sole means of getting full-time station residents up and down for two years. The capsule is parked at the station until they ride it home.

To keep the orbiting outpost with a full staff of six for as long as possible, the one American and two Russians due to return to Earth on Sept. 8 will remain on board at least an extra week.

As for supplies, the space station is well stocked and could go until next summer, Suffredini said. Atlantis dropped off a year's supply of goods just last month on the final space shuttle voyage. The unmanned craft destroyed Wednesday was carrying 3 tons of supplies.

For now, operations are normal in orbit, Suffredini noted, and the additional week on board for half the crew will mean additional science research.

The Soyuz has been extremely reliable over the decades; this was the first failure in 44 Russian supply hauls for the space station. Even with such a good track record, many in and outside NASA were concerned about retiring the space shuttles before a replacement was ready to fly astronauts.

Russian space officials have set up an investigation team and until it comes up with a cause for the accident and a repair plan, the launch and landing schedules remain in question. None of the spacecraft debris has been recovered yet; the wreckage fell into a remote, wooded section of Siberia. The third stage malfunctioned; a sudden loss of pressure apparently was noted between the engine and turbopump.

While a crew may well have survived such an accident because of safety precautions built into the manned version of the rocket, no one wants to take any chances.

One or two unmanned Soyuz launches are on tap for October, one commercial and the other another space station supply run. Those would serve as important test flights before putting humans on board, Suffredini said.

NASA considered vacating the space station before, following the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Back then, shuttles were still being used to ferry some station residents back and forth. Instead, the station got by with two-man crews for three years because of the significant cutback in supplies.

The space station's population doubled in 2009, to six. It wasn't until the space station was completed this year that science research finally took priority.

Even if the space shuttles still were flying, space station crews still would need Soyuz-launched capsules to serve as lifeboats, Suffredini said. The capsules are certified for no more than 6? months in space, thus the need to regularly rotate crews. Complicating matters is the need to land the capsules during daylight hours in Kazakhstan, resulting in weeks of blackout periods.

NASA wants American private companies to take over crew hauls, but that's three to five years away at best. Until then, Soyuz capsules are the only means of transporting astronauts to the space station.

Japan and Europe have their own cargo ships and rockets, for unmanned use only. Commercial front-runner Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, plans to launch a space station supply ship from Cape Canaveral at the end of November. That would be put on hold if no one is on board to receive the vessel.

Suffredini said he hasn't had time to consider the PR impact of abandoning the space station, especially coming so soon after the end of the 30-year shuttle program.

"Flying safely is much, much more important than anything else I can think about right this instant," he said. "I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to discuss any political implications if we spend a lot of time on the ground. But you know, we'll just have to deal with them because we're going to do what's safest for the crew and for the space station."

Despite this article?s title I really do love wine and food from Italy, France, Germany, and other countries as well. And who among us can reject a bargain? But I also hate wine and many, many aspects of the wine scene. Let me explain my top ten reasons for this love-hate relationship. Previous articles discussed the unconscionable expense, the embarrassing lack of knowledge, no wine cellar, I can?t get the ? bottle opened, insomnia, food problems, wine snobs, and the smells and tastes of wine, and wine colors. This article discusses home brew and the solution.

Why am I not a fan of home-made wine? To make it short and sweet I have yet to taste a home-made wine that doesn?t taste like a home-made wine. When you know a little bit about the complexities of wine production, it?s hard to believe that you can go to a store, buy liquid concentrate, pour it into bottles, squeeze on an ill-fitting cork, and in two months (or is it two weeks?) obtain a quality product. I know that I may be exaggerating somewhat, but the truth remains. History shows that time and time again dedicated amateurs have stood up to and even surpassed the professionals. But non-dedicated amateurs?

I think we can make an exception for people who have had wine-making in the family for generations. They may get their grapes from a brew-your-own outfit, especially if they live in a city apartment. But they don?t just add water, stir, wait a few weeks and expect to get better than Grandpa?s wine, except perhaps for the last batch he made when he was going blind and tried to push up the alcohol level with salt instead of sugar. Our humble conclusion, brew your own beer-maybe, wine-never.

There is one more problem with wine, but it?s none of your business.

And now for the Solution. I have been told that the solution to these problems is to forego drinking wine and move on to mineral water, tofu drinks, or even single-malt Scotch. To which I reply, never. Now if you?ll please excuse me there?s this special bottle that I?ve been meaning to open for a long time. It was quite expensive, I?m not sure of its grapes varieties, it hasn?t been cellared, I know I?ll have trouble opening it, I won?t sleep tonight, there?s nothing but day-old pizza in the fridge, the guy in the wine store turned up his nose when I bought it, my nose is plugged and my color chart is nowhere to be found, but it?s not home brew and I know I?m going to enjoy it. This might even tempt me to write a series on the top ten reasons I love wine. (But not the wine scene.)

Any personal financing book suggestions? | Retirement Planning

Hi. I?m looking for a book on managing personal finances/debt. A few that I have looked at seem mostly about ?getting rich? and investing. While that sounds great and all?I?m not at that point in my life where I can invest.

I?m 23 years old and will be done with grad. school in about 3 more years. Currently, I am surviving on a very limited income with very little extra money. I also had a bad spell with credit cards when I first turned 18 ? the negative accounts have been closed, however my credit is still marred and they will not be removed for 3 more years. Obviously, I am in no place to ?invest?, and I do not qualify for a 401(k) at my work, so books that focus solely on those two aspects will not be of much help to me.

Anyone have any advice on books that someone like myself can actually benefit from? Thanks for any suggestions!

Failed experiment: Apple pulls TV rentals from iTunes (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "Modern Family" fans will no longer have the option to rent or buy -- at least when it comes to iTunes.

On Friday, Apple dropped the TV rental service from its popular online store.

The company unveiled the 99-cent service last October for a six-month trial, using only ABC and Fox programing. The trial period lasted a bit longer than expected, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

"After carefully considering the results of the rental trial, it became clear that content ownership is a more attractive long-term value proposition both for iTunes customers and for our business," Fox said in a statement. "To further enhance the value of ownership, we are working with Apple to make content available within their new cloud-based service."

Movies will continue to be available for rent as well as purchase.

The funny thing is that as big as the Chris Brown-assisted single was for him, Kanye West's understudy originally bucked at the idea of recording the poppy single.

"When No ID gave me that beat for the song 'My Last,' I did not want to do it at all," the Finally Famous MC revealed.

Luckily for Sean, he was convinced otherwise. The song shot up the charts and peaked at #1 on the Billboard rap chart and #4 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Ultimately, the single's success helped the Detroit rapper land the #3 album in the country, finishing behind Beyoncé's #1 LP, 4, and Adele's 21.

Sean continued to make strides in his breakout year, snagging an opening spot on Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers Tour, being named one of MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductees and, of course, his Best New Artist nom at the VMAs.

He has producer No ID to thank. "He was like, 'Man, do you want to be a mixtape rapper forever, or do you want to make songs people can live to and dance to?' " Sean recalled. "And then I was in the studio with Chris, played it for him, and he went crazy."

Sounds like a no brainer.

Syrian protesters chanted ?Bye, bye Gaddafi, Bashar your turn is coming? overnight, but President Bashar al-Assad showed few signs of cracking after months of demonstrations and his forces raided an eastern tribal region again on Thursday.

The new chant, inspired by the apparent collapse of Muammar Gaddafi?s rule in Libya, was filmed by residents in the Damascus suburb of Duma after prayers on Wednesday.

But in eastern Syria, tanks and armoured vehicles entered Shuhail, a town southeast of the provincial capital of Deir al-Zor, where daily protests have taken place against Assad?s rule since the start of the fasting month of Ramadan, they said.

?Initial reports by residents describe tens of tanks firing randomly as they stormed the town at dawn. Shuhail has been very active in protests and the regime is using overwhelming force to frighten the people,? a local activist said.

Since Ramadan began on August 1, tanks have entered the cities of Hama, scene of a 1982 massacre by the military, Deir al-Zor and Latakia on the Mediterranean coast, trying to crush dissent after months of street protests.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an activist group based in Britain, said 11 civilians had been killed across Syria on Wednesday, including seven in the province of Homs.

State news agency SANA said ?armed terrorist groups? killed eight soldiers when they ambushed two military vehicles near the towns of Rastan and Telbiseh.

Syria has expelled most independent journalists, making it difficult to verify accounts on the ground from authorities and activists.

Prominent cartoonist and Assad critic Ali Ferzat was beaten up in Damascus by a group of armed men and then dumped in the street, an opposition activist group said. SOHR said Ferzat was taken to hospital with bruises to his face and hands.

Ferzat, whose cartoons often mock repression and injustice in the Arab world, has criticised Assad?s repression of protests. He told Al Arabiya television three weeks ago: ?For the first time there is a genuine and free revolution in Syria.?

EU OIL SANCTIONS POSSIBLE

The defeat of Gaddafi may encourage Western nations to step up moves against Assad. He has pursued parallel policies of strengthening ties with Iran and Shi?ite Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah while seeking peace talks with Israel and accepting European and U.S. overtures that were key in rehabilitating him on the international stage.

European Union diplomats said on Wednesday the bloc?s governments were likely to impose an embargo on imports of Syrian oil by the end of next week, although new sanctions may be less stringent than those imposed by Washington.

Syria exports over a third of its 385,000 barrels of daily crude oil output to Europe, mainly the Netherlands, Italy, France and Spain.

A disruption would cut off a major source of foreign currency that helps to finance the security apparatus, and restrict funds at Assad?s disposal to reward loyalists and continue a crackdown in which the United Nations says 2,200 people have been killed.

In a sign the prospect of sanctions was already having an effect, traders said French oil major Total had not lifted a cargo of naphtha from Syria?s Banias refinery which it had bought in a tender.

Arab League ministers will meet in Cairo on Saturday to discuss Syria. An official said they would discuss imposing a time frame for Assad to enact reforms.

But they would also call on ?all parties to end the conflict,? the official said, in an apparent acceptance of Syria?s argument it faces armed opponents.

In an interview with state television this week, Assad said the unrest ?has shifted towards armed acts.? Authorities blame the violence on ?armed terrorist groups,? who they say have killed an unspecified number of civilians and 500 soldiers and police.

?NO THREAT?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said it was up to the Syrian authorities and people to find a way out of the unrest.

?The hope of the West is to attack Syria the way they intervened in Libya but the people and the government in Syria should sit down together and reach an understanding on reforms,? he told al-Manar television channel.

?The people should have the right to elections, freedom and justice (so) they should set the timeline about it (together).?

Human Rights Watch said in a new report the vast majority of civilian deaths documented by Syrian human rights groups ?have occurred in circumstances in which there was no threat to Syrian forces.?

?President al-Assad has said he is pursuing a battle against ?terrorist groups? and ?armed gangs,? and Syrian authorities have claimed that they have ?exercised maximum restraint while trying to control the situation?. Neither claim is true,? the report said.

It said Syrian forces had killed at least 49 people since Assad told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on August 17 military and police operations had stopped, adding that on August 22 in Homs, Syrian forces ?fired on a crowd of peaceful protesters shortly after a U.N. humanitarian assessment team left the area, killing four.?

The official state news agency quoted Assad as telling clerics during a Ramadan ?iftar? meal on Wednesday the West was pressuring Syria ?to sell out, which will not happen because the Syrian people have chosen to have an independent will.?

Associations and personalities active within the Moroccan community living abroad demanded the adoption of an organic law to ensure the election of a legislative institution that comprises representatives of the Moroccan diaspora.

In a statement carried by Maghreb Arab Press on Tuesday, these associations called on political parties to ?respect the King?s will expressed in a speech on 20 August 2011, which is consistent with the desire of Moroccan citizens living abroad and aims to ensure the optimal implementation of the provisions of the constitution.?

They also demanded that Moroccans living abroad be included in a national list by means of creating a special list, which allows for the participation of Moroccan expatriates to vote and to run for elected office from their countries of residence and to turn the vote by proxy into the exception rather than the rule.

They further stressed the need to follow through with the provisions of the new constitution that enables Moroccans residing abroad to enjoy full citizenship rights, including political rights.

The statement was signed by representatives of a number of Moroccan political parties abroad, as well as the ?Caucus of Moroccan Democratic Associations in Europe for Effective Citizenship Here and There.?

Last Thursday, the Maghreb Arab Press reported that The Caucus of Moroccan Democratic Associations in Europe for Effective Citizenship Here and There (Le Collectif des Associations D?mocratiques Marocaines en Europe pour une Citoyennet? Effective Ici et L?-bas) had called on political parties to incorporate Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) within their national lists, for the upcoming elections and to be able to vote along with women and youth.

For several years Moroccans living abroad have been calling on the Moroccan authorities to enable their participation in their country?s political life and to take their concerns into account. As their remittances constitute one of the major sources of income for the Moroccan economy, they have been seeking to obtain a political participation and influence proportionate to their impact on their country?s economy.

Their remittances constitute the second largest source of revenue in the balance of payments after merchandise exports. Income being sent home by Moroccan expatriates increased 7.8% to hit 54.10 billion dirhams in 2010, compared to 50.21 in 2009.

Europe, US stocks rise on upbeat economic report (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Stocks in Europe and the U.S. rose Wednesday after data showing a surge in demand for cars and planes in July offered an unexpectedly upbeat sign of life in the U.S. economy.

Investors on both sides of the Atlantic shrugged off a cut in Japan's credit rating that had weighed on Asian markets earlier in the day.

But stocks are likely to fluctuate ahead of Friday's speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at an economics conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Investors hope Bernanke will signal a third round of massive bond-buying to boost the faltering U.S. recovery.

Britain's FTSE 100 rose 1.9 percent to 5,227 points. Germany's DAX jumped 3.4 percent to 5,723 and France's CAC-40 added 2.4 percent to 3,158.

After initially opening lower, Wall Street also turned higher after the Commerce Department reported an unexpected 4 percent surge in demand for long-lasting manufactured goods in July. Demand for autos and auto parts jumped 11.5 percent, the most in eight years. Aircraft orders, a volatile category, soared 43.4 percent, after falling 24 percent in June.

The data is encouraging because it shows resilient demand for goods that require big, long-term investments.

In morning trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5 percent to 11,236, while the broader S&P 500 gained 0.6 percent to 1,169.

The report from the Commerce department "reinforces other data that the economy wasn't at serious risk of recession through July," said David Resler, chief U.S. economist at Nomura Securities. Retail sales and industrial production also held up well last month, he said.

The positive report also boosted oil prices, as a growing economy has more demand for energy.

But analysts have warned that any long-term stabilization in global stock markets will likely only come once there is a better plan to get the U.S. economy to grow faster and create more jobs as well as a lasting solution to the eurozone's debt crisis.

"If Bernanke does not pull a rabbit out of the hat at Jackson Hole on Friday risk trades could look vulnerable once again," analysts at Credit Agricole cautioned.

Fresh data out of the eurozone indicated that some businesses are already preparing for potential troubles.

Germany's closely watched Ifo index of business optimism fell more than expected in another negative signal about Europe's largest economy. The index fell to 108.7 for August from 112.9 in July. Market analysts had expected a smaller drop to 111.0.

"August's drop in Ifo business confidence adds to the growing evidence that the German economic recovery has faltered," analysts at Capital Economics wrote in a note, adding that a slowdown for the eurozone's growth engine is set to hurt other members of the currency union that are still fighting to pull themselves out of crisis.

The European Union's statistics office, meanwhile, said that industrial new orders in the currency union dropped 0.7 percent in June from the previous month. In May, industrial orders had grown 3.6 percent.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.1 percent to close at 8,639.61 after opening higher early Wednesday.

Sentiment was dented after Moody's Investors Service downgraded Japan's credit rating to Aa3 from Aa2, citing weak growth prospects for the world's No. 3 economy, massive government debt and constant political uncertainty. The new rating is three notches below Moody's top Aaa rating.

The downgrade, which puts Moody's rating in line with other major credit rating agencies, is the latest blow for Japan after its economy remained mired in recession in the second quarter due to tumbling factory production and exports following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

South Korea's Kospi dropped 1.2 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 2.1 percent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.1 percent. Markets in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also fell.

Mainland Chinese shares were mixed with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.5 percent to 2,541.09 while the Shenzhen Composite Index edged 0.1 percent higher to 1,144.74.

In commodities markets, benchmark oil for October delivery rose 27 cents to $85.68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude for October delivery jumped 85 cents to $110.16 on the ICE Futures exchange.

The euro slipped 0.1 percent to $1.442, while the dollar remained stable at 76.69 yen.

While reading through some stock market news over the past few days, I was reminded of the fear that exists in the public regarding the economy and the stock market. The news is downright depressing and scary. Why would anyone invest in this market? Even the ?so-called experts? can?t seem to agree on how the near term future will unfold. As a result, many experienced investors have removed their money from equity investments. I suspect that most persons that had considered getting trained in stock market investing have given up on those ambitions.

Here?s a sampling of some recent negative news from the financial experts:
