HP could spinoff PC division [UPDATED] ? Computer Chips & Hardware ...

Update:?An HP?press release?has confirmed that HP is exploring a sale of its Personal Systems Group, is in discussions with Autonomy, and has?discontinued WebOS and related devices.

According to a report the world?s largest PC manufacturer might be planning to spinoff its PC business. Bloomberg notes that ?people familiar with the matter? have stated HP may separate its PC division from the rest of the business and then acquire Autonomy, an enterprise software company, in a $10 billion deal.

While the story has yet to be confirmed by the company, it has significant implications for HP and the computer industry at large. HP has been very successful at selling computers over the past years, but the company knows all too well that this is a low margin, high competition business, and one that sells nearly commoditized goods.

Despite the lack of confirmation, the spinoff of the PC division does seem to make sense. HP has been increasingly focused on doing more than manufacturing PCs, including operations as diverse as WebOS and SkyRoom. Also CEO Leo Apotheker, who has not been with the company very long, comes from SAP AG, a large-scale enterprise software company. Finally we know about successful examples of this happening in the past?the most notable being IBM, who sold off its PC division to Lenovo in 2004. The move to software and services could get HP away from low-margin businesses and on the path to being a very different company than it is today.

The other part of this deal would be HP?s acquisition of Autonomy, for a reported $10 billion. Autonomy is currently focused on knowledge management software that it implements for large businesses, including Symantec, Citrix, and EDC.

HP has a company earnings call tonight, hopefully we?ll learn more about the news then.
