In the 10:30 a.m. talk, Lam will discuss hormone therapy for prostate cancer as well as the natural history of the disease."Prostate cancer is a manageable, rarely deadly disease," said Lam, of Marina del Rey. "A man's quality of life must be taken into account when managing this disease." The federal Centers for Disease Control report that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. In the United States, 223,307 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007, and 29,093 men died from it. Lam is board-certified in internal medicine and oncology, and board-eligible in hematology. As the research director of Prostate Oncology Specialists, he is involved in the development of new treatments, as well as methods for minimizing the potential side effects of therapy. Lam said one of the biggest myths about prostate cancer is that it's deadly, "when, in fact, it's not." Another misunderstanding is that the treatments are easy and guaranteed successful. "The truth is that incontinence, impotence, penile shrinkage, bleeding bowels and bladders are still very real side effects," he said. Another common myth is that all men diagnosed with prostate cancer need treatment. "The truth is that this disease can be extremely slow-growing. So it is not uncommon to safely monitor a cancer for over 10 years," Lam said. He said there are ongoing new developments to treat prostate cancer, including robotic surgery; intensity-modulated radiation; temporary and permanent seed implants; full, partial or intermittent hormone blockade; full or targeted cryoblation therapy; active surveillance; chemotherapy; immunotherapy; angiogenesis inhibitors; and diet and herbal treatments. He said multiple treatments may be necessary for certain cases.
