Travel industry press reports the cruise sector is likely to suffer a dip following the Costa Concordia tragedy, with one industry expert fearing that first-time cruisers would be ?particularly sensitive? to the disaster which occurred off the Italian coast in January.

He suggests the accident, which happened at what is normally peak booking time, could have a notable impact on the market. However the same spokesman doubted the incident was likely to have as great an impact on the travel industry as events such as the revolution in Egypt last year.

The John Proctor Travel view

Whilst in no way wishing to trivialise the dreadful circumstances surrounding the disaster, it is as usual a good idea to try to keep some perspective about the event and cruise safety in general. It is likely to be several months before the circumstances leading to the Costa Concordia catastrophe are established, however cruising continues to be one of the safest methods of transport in existence. Experts in the field confirm that rigorous safety standards are applied at the design stage, during ship build and whist ships are at sea, this applies equally to all ships, both small and large.

During 2011 it is estimated that worldwide approximately 19 million clients experienced a cruise and from the comments we have received from our own Cruise Club members it appears to us that contrary to the quoted report that bookings are likely to be as strong as ever for this market.
