Getting To Know Ice Hockey And It's History ? GREEN BALL INFORMATION

You might think you know everything about the sport of hockey because you keep up with the stars of the NHL. Perhaps you know all their season stats, watched all the games and even research your favorite NHLers? personal lives outside of the sport. But how much do you really know concerning the historical nature of the sport? Ice hockey dates back farther than you may imagine. Read on and perhaps you will have something new to talk about the next time you link up with hockey friends.

There used to be a game played starting in the Middle Ages in the Netherlands that resembled what we know as ice hockey today. It was known as colf. This game was played on ice and with a curved stick or bat, along with a ball that was typically made of animal hide or wood rather than a puck. The main object of the game was to knock the ball between two markers in the minimal amount of strokes on the ice as you can.

While this game resembled the ice hockey we all know and love today, notable history scholars really think that outdoor stick-and-ball games are where ice hockey truly comes from. These particular kind of games were modified to the freezing Canadian climate in the 19th century. British soldiers and Canada?s immigrants came up with the basics of ice hockey from these stick-and-ball games that used to be played by First Nations (also know as Native Americans). Despite the fact that the term ?hockey? does not have a clear origin, it has been found in books and documents dating all the way back to 1799 in England.

Although hockey?s origins seem to start in Europe, Montreal is regarded as the city that changed ice hockey into the form of hockey that is played nowadays. The first official hockey game occurred on March 3, 1875 in a Montreal ice skating rink. At this time, the teams consisted of nine players rather than the six that is considered standard today. Seven basic ice hockey rules were set in 1877, most of which were based on previously existing rules in field hockey. Also this year the first ice hockey club was established. It was called the McGill University Hockey Club. The Montreal Victorias club soon followed in 1881. Ice hockey grew in popularity quite quickly, and the first ?world championship game? was held only two years later at the Winter Carnival, a yearly event in Montreal. After that, the rest is quite literally history, as the game became more recognized and turned into the sport we?re all familiar with today.
