The Vyne Reviews New Music: Jill, Marsha, Beyonce and Ledisi ...

By Kailei R.

I don?t know about you, but I am tired of all of the ?studio-created singers? out here. I mean, when you turn on the radio, how many of the most popular singers are really ?singers?? This year there have been several releases from real singing divas, so we wanted to give you our take for which you should download whether one song or the entire album.

Jill Scott: The Light of the Sun

Almost four years since her last album release, Ms. Scott has done it again. In a time when artists seem to create albums full of separate songs that one can pick and choose to download, it?s refreshing to listen to a cohesive collection of songs. When I previewed this album on iTunes to determine which songs to download I had to download the entire album since so many of the songs seem to build from the previous one. I enjoyed this album from top to bottom. In true Jill style, it?s filled with jazz, poetry, and soul. The epitome of ?grooving? music. Here are some you must check out:

Summertime Feel Good Jams: ?So in Love (Featuring Anthony Hamilton)? and ?I Love You?

Sexy Set: ?So Gone (What My Mind Says),? ?Making You Wait,? ?Until Then (I Imagine),? ?Missing You?

?Can?t Wait to Hear These Live? Cuts: ?The Light of the Sun,? ?Le BOOM Vent Suite,? ?Rolling Hills?

I give it 3.5 out of 4 berries on the Vyne

Marsha Ambrosius: Late Nights, Early Mornings

Though this was released in February, I have met enough people who haven?t listened to this that I wanted to include it into the mix. Marsha?s unique voice along with the R&B sound and contemporary beats makes this album enjoyable. I must say that if you?re going through a break-up, this could be the album you want to listen to the most or completely stay away from. With songs like ?Hope She Cheats on You With a Basketball Player? and ?The Break Up Song,? you?ll be sure to either feel vengeful or have a sobfest with this one.? Some of my favorites:

Got Back Together Song: ?Lose Myself?

Sexy Set: ?Late Nights & Early Mornings? and ?With You?

Sing-along Love Song: ?I Want You to Stay?

Cry Your Eyes Out Song: ?The Break Up Song?

I give it 3 out of 4 berries on the Vyne

Beyonce: 4

Beyonce recently released her fourth album called 4 which is a mix of dance tracks, love songs, and grooving tunes with influences from the 80s and 90s. Beyonce includes her trademark heavy drumbeats in ?Countdown,? ?End of Time,? and ?Run the World (Girls),? as well as the required ballad or two including ?1+1.? At times, I felt like the percussion in many of the tracks were just a little louder than they needed to be (but maybe if they hadn?t been they wouldn?t have sounded special). Though many have said this release doesn?t seem to have many ?hits,? the same was said about B Day and we she sure proved the haters wrong there. Some of my favorites are:

The Wailing Love Song: ?1+1?

Break up Song: ?Best Thing I Never Had?

Feel Good Groove: ?Love on Top?

Workout Song: ?Run the World (Girls)?

I give it 3 out of 4 berries on the Vyne

Ledisi: Pieces of Me

I really wanted to like this album. I really, really did. Ledisi is one of the most under-appreciated vocalists of our time and is probably one of the best singers I?ve ever heard live. However, this album fell flat for me. Though she had some of her usual influences of jazz, blues and gospel, overall it was typical adult contemporary R&B.? I think some of her broader exposure lately has caused her sound to go a little too mainstream. I would have enjoyed it much better if it was recorded live. I did like some of the songs, though. You can add these to your playlist:

The Duet Lovesong: ?Stay Together? (featuring Jaheim)

?Shake Off the Haters? Song: ?Shut Up?

Sexy Cut: ?I Gotta Get to You?

Uplifting Song: ?Shine?

I give it 2.5 out of 4 berries on the Vyne
