Obama: Immigration leak didn't hurt Senate talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama sought Wednesday to mitigate any damage from the leak of an immigration bill being drafted by the White House, telling a Spanish-language TV network he didn't jeopardize negotiations with the Senate.

Leaks in Washington happen all the time, Obama said, and shouldn't prevent immigration reform from moving forward. He said negotiations are continuing at full speed.

Members of a bipartisan Senate group taking the lead on immigration reform were caught off-guard over the weekend when details of Obama's own bill were published on USA Today's website. Obama has in the past said he's prepping his own bill, but only as a back-up in case congressional talks fail.

Some Republicans have questioned whether the leak of a competing bill tied makes it more difficult to strike a deal in the Senate. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, one of the Republicans in the group, said Obama's plan injects partisanship into a tough process. And David Axelrod, a senior adviser to Obama's re-election campaign, acknowledged that it likely was a mistake for news of Obama's plan to be made public.

Obama said Wednesday he still prefers that Congress ? not the White House ? craft a viable law to overhaul the nation's immigration system, and that his standby bill doesn't intrude on the bill that senators are hashing out. He said the ideas included in his bill are consistent with the immigration proposals he has advocated for the past several years, meaning they shouldn't come as a surprise to members of either party.

Obama's comments came in an interview with KWEX, San Antonio's Univision affiliate and one of eight local TV stations to sit down with Obama on Wednesday at the White House. KWEX aired the interview in Spanish with a translation of Obama's remarks.

While Obama and the Senate group differ on some key details, both sides are contemplating legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for most of the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S., tighten border security, crack down on businesses that employ illegal workers and strengthen the legal immigration system.

Google Public Policy Blog: An update on our war against account ...

Have you ever gotten a plea to wire money to a friend stranded at an international airport? An oddly written message from someone you haven?t heard from in ages? Compared to five years ago, more scams, illegal, fraudulent or spammy messages today come from someone you know. Although spam filters have become very powerful?in Gmail, less than 1 percent of spam emails make it into an inbox?these unwanted messages are much more likely to make it through if they come from someone you?ve been in contact with before. As a result, in 2010 spammers started changing their tactics?and we saw a large increase in fraudulent mail sent from Google Accounts. In turn, our security team has developed new ways to keep you safe, and dramatically reduced the amount of these messages.

Spammers? new trick?hijacking accounts?
To improve their chances of beating a spam filter by sending you spam from your contact?s account, the spammer first has to break into that account. This means many spammers are turning into account thieves. Every day, cyber criminals break into websites to steal databases of usernames and passwords?the online ?keys? to accounts. They put the databases up for sale on the black market, or use them for their own nefarious purposes. Because many people re-use the same password across different accounts, stolen passwords from one site are often valid on others.

With stolen passwords in hand, attackers attempt to break into accounts across the web and across many different services. We?ve seen a single attacker using stolen passwords to attempt to break into a million different Google accounts every single day, for weeks at a time. A different gang attempted sign-ins at a rate of more than 100 accounts per second. Other services are often more vulnerable to this type of attack, but when someone tries to log into your Google Account, our security system does more than just check that a password is correct.

Legitimate accounts blocked for sending spam:?Our security systems have dramatically reduced the number of Google Accounts used to send spam over the past few years

How Google Security helps protects your account
Every time you sign in to Google, whether via your web browser once a month or an email program that checks for new mail every five minutes, our system performs a complex risk analysis to determine how likely it is that the sign-in really comes from you. In fact, there are more than 120 variables that can factor into how a decision is made.

If a sign-in is deemed suspicious or risky for some reason?maybe it?s coming from a country oceans away from your last sign-in?we ask some simple questions about your account. For example, we may ask for the phone number associated with your account, or for the answer to your security question. These questions are normally hard for a hijacker to solve, but are easy for the real owner. Using security measures like these, we've dramatically reduced the number of compromised accounts by 99.7 percent since the peak of these hijacking attempts in 2011.

Help protect your account
While we do our best to keep spammers at bay, you can help protect your account by making sure you?re using a strong, unique password for your Google Account, upgrading your account to use 2-step verification, and updating the recovery options on your account such as your secondary email address and your phone number. Following these three steps can help prevent your account from being hijacked?this means less spam for your friends and contacts, and improved security and privacy for you.

Pope considers new conclave rules, date uncertain

Pictures of Pope Benedict XVI are seen at a newsstand outside the pope's summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, in the town of Castelgandolfo, south of Rome, Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI may enact a new law governing the upcoming conclave to elect a new pope amid continued uncertainty over when the voting can begin.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Wednesday that he didn't know for sure if the new law under consideration would address the timing of the conclave following Benedict's Feb. 28 resignation. He said it would contain some "clarifications" on certain points. But given the crush of interest surrounding the conclave date, it seems only natural it might clarify the issue.

The current law says cardinals should wait 15 days after the papacy becomes vacant before launching a conclave to allow all eligible cardinals to arrive in Rome, making March 15 the presumed start. That delay, however, assumed a papal death and funeral. In this case, the cardinals already know that this pontificate will end Feb. 28 and can get to Rome in plenty of time.

Some canonists and scholars have said the current rules allow for some wiggle room on the 15-day wait given that most if not all the cardinals will already be in Rome for Benedict's final general audience Feb. 27 and his farewell meeting with cardinals on Feb. 28.

"The document says that the cardinals present in Rome must wait 15 days for the arrival of the others," noted Ambrogio Piazzoni, the vice prefect of the Vatican library. "That can mean that if the cardinals all arrive before the 15 days there is no need to wait. The phrase 'must wait' doesn't say that you can't start before 15 days."

However, leading U.S. canonist Edward Peters, an adviser to the Vatican high court, welcomed word that the pope himself might intervene.

"Advancing the conclave start-date would make obvious good sense, but actually doing so on anything less than express papal authority raises serious canonical and even ecclesiological problems," he said on his blog.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Palm Sunday Mass followed by Easter Sunday on March 31. In order to have a new pope in place in time for the most solemn liturgical period on the church calendar, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, because of the strong tradition to hold installation Mass on a Sunday. Given the tight time-frame, speculation has mounted that some arrangement would be made to start the conclave on March 10 or thereabouts, earlier than a strict reading of the law would allow.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the No. 1 issue on the agenda is when the conclave would start.

Speaking Tuesday on his radio show on Sirius XM's "The Catholic Channel," Dolan said most cardinals would prefer to have a conclave sooner rather than later to avoid a long vacancy in the papacy.

"On the other hand you don't want to rush it. We need prayer. We need to get to know one another. We need time to let Benedict's departure sink in," he said. "So we're going to need the virtue of prudence here."

Photo Story: Cameroon | Peter Gostelow - Adventure Cycling ...

This was a sad sight on the roads of eastern Cameroon. Dozens of logging trucks thundered towards me each day as I headed towards the border with the Central African Republic. Some of those trunks must have been hundreds of years old, destined to become furniture for people on another continent. The drivers rarely slowed down as their vehicles kicked up clouds of red dust into the air. I resulted to wearing a facemask, as did Hiromu, the Japanese cyclist I would continue to cycle with until the Congo DRC.

Vegetation and huts along the roadside were covered in this red dust. I wondered why people, like this group of Fula-speaking women, didn?t move their homes further away from the road.

Deforestation in Africa is happening at a rate four times faster than anywhere else in the World. Local people have no voice or rights to their land being stripped of its natural resources. In West Africa I saw very little virgin forest. In Central Africa it is disappearing quickly too. Were the region more stable that speed of deforestation might increase even further. Needless to say the cycling wasn?t all that enjoyable. You can read the blog post during my time in this part of Africa here.

Key Remedies For Treating Hyperthyroidism - Ayushveda

Hyperthyroidism TreatmentHyperthyroidism may not essentially pose life-threatening outcomes. Sometimes, its causes may remain untreated and cause no damaging harm.? However, hyperthyroidism owing to Graves?s disease generally gets worse and can present several complications in life affecting it quality.

Remedies for treating hyperthyroidism

There are several treatment procedures for treating hyperthyroidism depending on multiple factors like age, severity of illness and physical condition.

Drugs

Anti-thyroid Medication

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where your body produces more thyroid hormones than needed for its optimal functioning. Anti-thyroid drugs aim at symptomatic treatment of hyperthyroidism by preventing the thyroid gland from excessive production of thyroid hormones. With anti-thyroid drugs, your symptoms can start improving within 6-12 weeks, although medications are usually needed for a year or longer. There are, however, chances of relapse.

methimazole

Drugs commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism are propylthiouracil and methimazole. Drugs are administered on the basis of suitability. They can cause side effects as allergy, fever, joint pain and even increase your susceptibility to infection. They can also cause serious liver damage leading to death.

Anti thyroid medications can work best for treating mild hyperthyroidism. It can be the preferred remedy for treating hyperthyroidism if this is your first instance of being treated for Graves? disease, or if you are less than 50, or if the thyroid gland is not swollen considerably.

Beta blocker

Beta blockers, which are generally used to treat high blood pressure, aim at correcting the heart rate. They can also prevent palpitations, although they do not bring the thyroid levels back to normal. These drugs can also cause side effects like headache, fatigue, dizziness, constipation and diarrhea.

Therapy

Radioactive Iodine

Radioactive iodine, which is considered a safe treatment for hyperthyroidism, enables thyroid absorption through mouth. This process allows the thyroid gland to shrink and slow thyroid activity, causing hypothyroidism. You may need to take medicines on regular basis to balance your thyroid levels (by replacing thyroxine).

Radioactive Iodine

Source:?http://www.radiationprevention.com/2012/04/06/radioactive-iodine/

This treatment can be recommended if you have hyperthyroidism and are above 60 years old, or if you have thyroid nodules (toxic multinodular goiter) releasing excessive thyroid hormone. Radioactive iodine should not be administered to pregnant women or those wanting to conceive within 6 months of treatment. Lactating mothers and people having thyroiditis should also avoid the therapy.

Surgery (thyroidectomy)

Surgical removal of most of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) is not a common treatment for hyperthyroidism; initial treatment does not include surgery. It is usually suited for people having a big thyroid gland which can cause difficulty swallowing or breathing. It can also be implemented if you have single large thyroid nodule which releases excessive thyroid hormone. Pregnant women who cannot consume the anti thyroid drugs or administer radioactive iodine therapy may also find this option suited. Surgery may also serve people having lots of side effects of consuming anti thyroid drugs.

There are risks of this surgery like damage to the vocal cords and parathyroid glands (which aid calcium control in blood). You will require lifelong administration of levothyroxine to maintain the normal levels of thyroid. You can also require medication to control your blood-calcium levels in case the parathyroid glands are removed.?Besides the above treatment procedures, the following things can also prove helpful

Supplementing diet

Hyperthyroidism may lead to weight loss or muscle wasting which can benefit from adding calories and protein to diet. A doctor (or dietitian) can provide you with a suited meal planning. You may require supplements only until your hyperthyroidism is uncontrolled.

Supplementing diet

You can also gain considerable weight through treatment of hyperthyroidism. In such a case, you should check and plan your diet in such a way that you do not consume empty calories. Prepare a meal plan which is low in calories but high in nutrition. You should also consider consuming the right amount of sodium and calcium through dietary considerations.

Focussing on calcium and Vitamin D

Hyperthyroidism may cause bone thinning due to which it is necessary to get sufficient calcium each day. Women need more calcium than men and should particularly improve their consumption of calcium to prevent osteoporosis.

According to the Institute of Medicine, 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium is required each day by adults (19-50 years old) and men in the age group of 50-70 years. Men above 70 should increase their calcium intake to 1,200 mg each day. The recommendation for women aged 51 or more is also 1,200 mg a day. Besides, the recommendation for vitamin D is 600 international units (IUs) of every day for adults in the age group 19-70, which increases to 800 IUs a day for people above 70 years of age.
